The Effect Of Emg And Skin Temperature Biofeedback On Essential Hypertension, Michael Harness

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, behavioral approaches for the treatment of essential hypertension have received considerable research attention. Biofeedback and relaxation training have been the behavioral treatments most often used for lowering high blood pressure. The present study compared the separate use of EMG and skin temperature biofeedback in treating essential hypertension, with a combined approach utilizing both types of feedback. Twenty-one hyper- tensive subjects were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental conditions: (a) EMG biofeedback, (b) skin temperature biofeedback, or (c) both EMG and skin temperature biofeedback. In addition, a control group consisting of patients randomly chosen from a …

Two Theories Of Mind Based On Split-Brain Research: Their Implications For Selected Models Of Psychotherapy, Stephen Diggs Jan 1983

Two Theories Of Mind Based On Split-Brain Research: Their Implications For Selected Models Of Psychotherapy, Stephen Diggs

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis is based on conceptual research or what Campbell, et al, calls critical analysis. This type of research involves "critically evaluating theories advanced by other writers” (1982: 32). The information used in this research was gathered from the written work of a variety of thinkers who can be grouped into four categories. Brain science researchers are the people working experimentally on the questions of lateralized brain function. This group includes neurosurgeons and psychologists. Their writings consist of experimental processes and results as well as conclusions and speculations about brain function.

A Taxonomical Study Of Literary Criticism, Joanne M. Shroba-Wehner Jan 1983

A Taxonomical Study Of Literary Criticism, Joanne M. Shroba-Wehner

Theses

This paper explores the foundational influence of Plato and Aristotle on the development of literary criticism, tracing how their contrasting philosophies have shaped Western literary theory through successive historical periods. Plato’s skepticism toward mimetic art and his emphasis on divine inspiration set the stage for a long tradition of Platonic influence, later adapted by thinkers such as Sir Philip Sidney, Wordsworth, and Shelley. These Neoplatonists reinterpret Plato’s ideas, often granting greater value to poetic imagination and emotional resonance.

In contrast, Aristotle’s systematic approach to poetics—centered on imitation, catharsis, and structured drama—formed the bedrock for classical and neoclassical criticism. His ideas …

A Study Of The Federal Response To Drug Use In The Twentieth Century Utilizing The Social Movement Theories Of Herbert Blumer And Neil J. Smelser, Gary Blatnick

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis attempts to provide a sociological understanding of the drug use problem in the United States. The research attempts to tie the social problem of drug abuse to traditional social movement models. Herbert Blumer (1971:298) in his article, "Social Problems as Collective Behavior," stated the following: Sociologists have erred in locating social problems in objective conditions. Instead, social problems have their being in a process of collective definition. This process determines whether social problems will arise, whether they become legitimated, how they are shaped in discussion, how they come to be addressed in official policy, and how they are …

Holistic Criticism: The Development Of A New Framework For Literary Criticism, Mark Shilstone Jan 1983

Holistic Criticism: The Development Of A New Framework For Literary Criticism, Mark Shilstone

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The first chapter of the project consists of an examination of the existing schools of literary criticism. For ease in analysis, the various schools are analyzed according to the amount of outside research engaged in by the critic, that is, research which deals with elements extrinsic to the actual text itself. At one extreme is new criticism, which argues that one need not indulge in any outside research, but simply should focus on the literature itself. At the other extreme is historical criticism, which insists that a complete knowledge of the author and the times in which the author wrote …

The Heritage Of Faith: An Historical Evaluation Of The Holiness Movement In America, Craig Charles Fankhauser Jan 1983

The Heritage Of Faith: An Historical Evaluation Of The Holiness Movement In America, Craig Charles Fankhauser

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This work traces the holiness movement from the Biblical Day of Pentecost, when the disciples of Christ first received the Holy Spirit, to the founding of independent holiness denominations in the first two decades of the twentieth century. In the eighteenth century the main emphasis of this perfectionists movement centered around the teachings of an Anglican priest, John Wesley. Wesleyan doctrine stressed two distinct religious experiences--justification (God forgiving individuals their sins) and sanctification. The latter cleansed the believer's heart from original sin and made him ready for heaven.

American holiness proponents founded the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1784 and in …

Christopher Caudwell And His Critics: A Study Of Caudwell's Philosophy Of Art And The Critical Response, Thomas Riggins Jan 1983

Christopher Caudwell And His Critics: A Study Of Caudwell's Philosophy Of Art And The Critical Response, Thomas Riggins

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis deals with the philosophy of art of the British Marxist, Christopher Caudwell. It begins with a general discussion of the intellectual environment of Caudwell's day–i.e., the 1920s and 30s in Europe and especially in England. It then procedes to a presentation of Caudwell's basic philosophical position with major emphasis on his work Illusion and Reality. This is followed by a review of the critical assessment Caudwell's ideas evoked and a number of detractors and supporters are discussed. Special attention is then placed on a review of the aesthetic theory of Socialist Realism and Caudwell's relation to it. …

Luctor Et Emergo: The Impact Of The Second World War On Zeeland, Dirk Marc De Waard Jan 1983

Luctor Et Emergo: The Impact Of The Second World War On Zeeland, Dirk Marc De Waard

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is a study of the impact of the Second World War on Zeeland, the most southerly maritime province of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The thesis attempts to describe life in Zeeland before the outbreak of war and then looks at the changes caused by the arrival of the Germans in may 1940. For four and a half years Zeelanders (hereafter referred to as Zeeuws) lived and worked under the yoke of German rule and oppression before exchanging that yoke for freedom. It was here that Canadians played a role.

On a grand scale, the Canadian Army was …

A Translation Into English Of The German Novel Jakob Der LüGner By Jurek Becker, Harriet Passell Jan 1983

A Translation Into English Of The German Novel Jakob Der LüGner By Jurek Becker, Harriet Passell

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a translation of the German novel Jakob der Lugner by Jurek Becker. In my commentary I have tried to explain why I undertook the project of translating this novel from German into English, when that had already been done by Melvin Kornfeld. Kornfeld's translation, which is no longer in print, fails to do justice to Jurek Becker's style and changes a story of heartwarming simplicity, humor and psychological insight into a somewhat tedious account of the life in a ghetto during World War II.

The problems and factors that prohibited women from having outside jobs, social life, and equal rights in past and present times (from 610 A.D. to 1982) will be analyzed. On the other hand, the attempt is …

Parade: A Study Of The Creative Association Of The Artists Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso, And Leonide Massine, Mark Edward Mech

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will present a review and synthesis of evidence concerning the contributions made by Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso, and Leonide Massine to the creation of the work Parade. A complete study of the exact role played by each of the collaborators in the creation of the work has never been made. Existing research studies of Parade, as Richard Axsom's "Parade": Cubism as Theater, 1979, tend to emphasize contributions made by Cocteau and Picasso and to neglect Massine's contribution and the important role Erik Satie's music had in giving shape and substance to the work. This research project …

A History Of Bronson Park, Kalamazoo, Michigan From 1829 To 1940, Carol Knauss Dec 1982

A History Of Bronson Park, Kalamazoo, Michigan From 1829 To 1940, Carol Knauss

Masters Theses

Bronson Park is a 3.6-acre tract of land in the center of downtown Kalamazoo. For over 130 years the city has used this land for a public park. The land originally was donated to the county for a school and a jail by the men who owned and platted the area. Interested citizens converted the two squares into a park which, in the following years, was improved with trees, walks, and a fountain. This park became an important meeting place for the villagers who held political rallies and celebrations there. From 1829 to 1940 both the appearance and the way …

In 1828 Short co-founded The Transylvania Journal of Medicine and the Associate Sciences, in which he published many of …

Burt Brown Barker: His Role In Historic Preservation In Oregon, Mark Fredric Peterson Nov 1982

Burt Brown Barker: His Role In Historic Preservation In Oregon, Mark Fredric Peterson

Dissertations and Theses

The field of historic preservation has undergone· extreme changes in recent years. Only in the last few years have schools, businesses, and the public been interested in preserving historic sites. Prior to this involvement, historic preservation was accomplished by a few individuals and patriotic groups. Since the field is relatively new, little has been researched and written regarding the early efforts of preservation. One man who emerged as a leader in the preservation movement in Oregon, for over thirty years, was Burt Brown Barker.

This thesis, through research of the files associated with five different preservation projects, examines the role …

Forgotten Campaign: The Siege Of Suffolk, April 11 - May 4, 1863, Steven A. Cormier

History Theses & Dissertations

In April 1863, the Federal garrison at Suffolk, Virginia, commanded by Major General John J. Peck, was attacked by 20,000 Confederates under Lieutenant General James Longstreet. For 22 days, Longstreet's rebels kept Peck's Federals bottled up inside Suffolk while Confederate commissary troops emptied the surrounding countryside of precious food. and forage. Peck's 25,000 Federals, most of whom had seen little previous action, and the U. S. Navy gunboats sent to protect their river flank, managed to embarrass Longstreet's veterans and prevent the garrison from being captured. Nevertheless, the Siege of Suffolk was a Confederate success. Thousands of Yankee soldiers were …

William Walker And The Republic Of Lower California, James E. Braun Sep 1982

William Walker And The Republic Of Lower California, James E. Braun

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Though Willam Walker has made the transition from the hottest news personality in America during the years preceding the Civil War, to a virtual unknown, he still remains a controversial figure. Perhaps, due to his tremulous ambitions arrl irrational behavior which set American Latin American relations back decades, the majority of his biographers have not been able to confine themselves to writing the history of a man's life and the impact it made. Their works have many times been polemics, assigning attributes to Walker, ranging from a cold, calculating, paradoxical tyrant whose religion was chivalry, to a political phenomenon personifying …

Marion To Montgomery: A Twenty Year History Of Alabama State University, 1867-1887, Joseph Caver

Theses

Alabama State University is well known as a historically black university and for the involvement of its faculty and students during the civil rights movement. Less attention has been given to the school's remarkable origins, having begun as the Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alabama, founded by nine former slaves. These men are rightly considered the founders of Alabama State University, as they had the drive and perseverance to face the challenges posed by a racial and political culture bent on preventing the establishment of black schools and universities. It is thanks to the actions of the Marion Nine that …
