Dissertations
Problem
This study attempted to explore whether or not a significant relationship exists between religious orthodoxy (defined as religious rigidity and religious closed-mindedness) and marital sexual functioning.
Methodology
Two Likert-type scales were developed to measure religious orthodoxy and marital sexual functioning, respectively, in a sample of 217 subjects representing Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish faiths. The relationship between the eleven indices of marital sexual functioning (overall marital sexual functioning, sexual interest, responsivity, foreplay, frequency, pleasure, inhibition, anxiety, guilt, shame, and disgust) and religious regidity, religious closed-mindedness, and four moderator variables (sex, age, education, and duration of marriage of subjects) were investigated …

Liturgy And Ritual As Religious Education: Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, James Bingham
Liturgy And Ritual As Religious Education: Implications For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, James Bingham
Dissertations
Problem. The act of worship has not been the central focus of the Seventh-day Adventist church. An evangelistic priority has reduced its worship periods to mostly didactic acts, often leaving believers unsatisfied in their desires to worship. Structural deficiencies are evident in the neglect of liturgical and ritualistic matters. The problem is compounded in that the educative forces inherent in liturgical, ritualistic expressions are not well understood.
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to analyze the nature of liturgy and ritual in order to better understand their contribution and potential as religious education and their impact upon worship. It …

Seventh-Day Adventists And Original Sin: A Study Of The Early Development Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Understanding Of The Effect Of Adam's Sin On His Posterity, Edwin Harry Zackrison
Dissertations
Problem. In Seventh-day Adventist theology, the doctrine of original sin has received ambivalent treatment. Periodically voices within the church and outside of it have asserted that the doctrine has no part in SDA theology, yet other Christians have insisted that it is a Scriptural doctrine. It was the purpose of the present study to examine the theological roots of Adventism to determine the reasons for and the content of its treatment of the doctrine.
Method. Since Biblical and historical perspectives are indispensable to the critical process of theology, a brief developmental survey was done to reveal trends and models relevant …

Religious Value Transmission Among Seventh-Day Adventist White American Families : A Cognitive Approach To Parental Values And Relationship As Perceived By Youth, Claude M. Villeneuve
Dissertations
Three research questions were examined: (1) What role does cognitive-attribution play in religious value transmission? (2) Is there a generation gap in the religious values of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) families? (3) What is the influence of parental support on value transmission?
The Religious Value Transmission Study (RVTS) questionnaire was developed. The internal reliabilities of the fundamental belief, attitude, and behavior scales was, for each scale, above .80. A factor analysis with a rotation of factors confirmed the construct validity of the scales. A nation-wide random selection of SDA college freshmen and sophomores, and their parents returned 1089 questionnaires representing an …

The Effect Of Television Viewing On College Students : An Eeg Analysis Of Cerebral Asymmetry, William B. Sheffel
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The controversy over the effects of television viewing on human behavior has drawn a great deal of attention over the last decade. This study sought to investigate this area by looking at cortical response to television viewing.
The subjects in the study consisted of 24 men and 24 women (m=l9 .6 years) who were monitored for bilateral EEG alpha (8-13 Hz) brain wave production while viewing a television commercial (verbal and nonverbal/ spatial) and were then tested for recall at the end of the session.
The analysis of variance for a split-plot factorial design (S.P.F. 222.43; Kirk, 1968) revealed that …
Railroads In Tuolumne County, California : Their Role And Importance To Specific Industries And Their Impact On County Economic Development, 1897-1917, Kyle K. Wyatt
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
During most of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth numerous railroads were built throughout America. Some. grew into gigantic systems with names we recognize today; Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Chesapeake & Ohio. Others faded into oblivion. But all, successful or not, were built to fill transportation needs.
In Tuolumne County, California, located along the Mother. Lode and stretching into the high Sierra Nevada, the first railroad reached the county in 1897. By World War I a number of rail lines had been built. Several, having served their purpose, had already been removed by …

In the present study, a number of factors have been considered. The ground-plans of the various temples, as well as their locations within the city plan, have been investigated both chronologically and geographically. The interior elements and objects have also been studied. The purpose is to try to discern if …
Mythos And Metaphor In The Apocalypse Northrop Frye's Literary Criticism Applied To The Book Of Revelation, Daniel Nightswander
Mythos And Metaphor In The Apocalypse Northrop Frye's Literary Criticism Applied To The Book Of Revelation, Daniel Nightswander
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Northrop Frye’s book, The Great Code, published in 1981, drew attention to his interest in applying his own brand of literary criticism to the Bible. However, he did not comment in detail on any portion of the Bible in this book, choosing rather to make general statements about his approach and theories. The present thesis applies Frye’s theories to a single biblical book, namely the Apocalypse, after a brief review of Frye’s seminal works, Anatomy of Criticism and The Great Code. Two issues in understanding the Apocalypse are raised. They concern the structure, which is discussed in Frye’s category of …

The Effects Of Voluntary Aerobic Exercise And Exercise Incentives On Aerobic Capacity And Blood Lipid Levels In College Age Men And Women, Tamara Jean Shanholtzer
The Effects Of Voluntary Aerobic Exercise And Exercise Incentives On Aerobic Capacity And Blood Lipid Levels In College Age Men And Women, Tamara Jean Shanholtzer
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Most authorities on exercise agree that regular vigorous endurance type activity results in aerobic fitness (7, 10, 17, 36, 37). Rhythmic repetitive and dynamic activities using large muscle groups would include such aerobic exercise as Jogging, walking, swimming, cycling, tennis, basketball, racquetball, and soccer (1, 7, 10, 17). In addition, cardiovascular fitness has been suggested to be postively linked with a reduction in the incidence of coronary heart disease (1, 11, 36, 38, 53). Sometimes, problems that lead to adult illnesses are the result of lifestyles that deploy early in childhood (11). Health education procedures have been used to provide …

A review of the relevant literature provided the basis for a questionnaire mailed to four hundred, randomly selected social studies department chairpersons. Their attitudes regarding the legitimacy of the topic and methods employed in instructional lessons were addressed. Survey results were categorized according to respondents' incorporation of the topic into their curriculum and whether they taught in public or private institutions. A majority of …
The Great Task : Prosody And Songs Of Innocence, Biff Faunce
The Great Task : Prosody And Songs Of Innocence, Biff Faunce
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
While eschewing a strict definition on the didacticism of Blake's imaginative vision, the following four analyses could be said to revolve around three general themes. These are: (1) that Songs of Innocence engage in a dialectic, much of their appeal deriving from the tension created between the co-existence of so-called qualities of "innocence" and "experience"; (2) that each one is an individual attempt to reconcile these, as well as other, oppositions; and (3) that such a reconciliation is hierarchical, usually concluding on a transcendent or visionary plane. The first three center on the text and metrical phenomena. In "The Ecchoing …

Vortex In A Cauldron Of Evil: A Set Design For Macbeth, Vincent T. Niehaus Jr.
Theses
This thesis, Vortex in a Cauldron of Evil: A Set Design for Macbeth, explores the creation of a theatrical set inspired by the themes of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the macabre imagery associated with Charles Manson. The set design emphasizes Macbeth's descent into chaos and his struggle against forces he cannot control, symbolized by the theme “Vortex in a Cauldron of Evil.” The project incorporates elements like barren trees, lifeless skulls, and bloodied imagery to parallel Manson’s infamous legacy with Macbeth’s moral corruption. The thesis also details the design process, historical context, and artistic techniques used to evoke this dark …

Hope: Its Association With Belief, Change, And Therapy, Christopher S. Beechel
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
My thesis is based primarily on an examination of the pertinent literature available regarding the issue of hope in psychotherapy. My survey of the literature is grounded in the interpretive and speculative style of phenomenological research. It has not been my goal to prove or disprove anything. It has not been my desire to bring orderliness to the phenomenon under study nor to bring classification or prediction upon those who participate in therapy. I emphatically agree with Harre who states: "...Human social life is shot through with ambiguity and interdeterminateness—not because life events cannot be made determinate, but because it …

Juvenile Delinquency In Saudi Arabia And Its Causes, Abdul Aziz Al Amri
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study is an exploratory investigation of delinquency in Saudi Arabian males of similar ages and backgrounds. Saudi Arabia is undergoing many rapid social changes. While the rate of juvenile delinquency is very low in Saudi Arabia, compared to that of the industrialized nations, it appears to be a growing phenomenon. The relatively low rate is deceptively significant, as the people of Saudi Arabia are relatively intolerant of this behavior, compared to the people of the industrialized nations. It is uncommon for juvenile delinquency to be discussed publicly, and it is even more uncommon for people to work with delinquents, …

This form of nuclear family has many characteristics common to all nuclear families. Transitional crises as they relate to the life cycle changes of the family as well as difficulties establishing workable boundaries and roles are found in many family forms. However, the family of remarriage contains unique structural characteristics which may …
