The Death Of The Flying Wing : The Real Reasons Behind The 1949 Cancellation Of Northrop Aircraft's Rb-49, Francis J. Baker Jan 1984

The Death Of The Flying Wing : The Real Reasons Behind The 1949 Cancellation Of Northrop Aircraft's Rb-49, Francis J. Baker

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In an interview aired over the Public Broadcasting System in 1980 , aircraft manufacturer John K. Northrop made a stunning charge. Referring to the Air Force's 1949 cancellation of his Flying Wing aircraft, Mr. Northrop alleged that the cancellation was not the result of any valid concerns about the aircraft itself, but rather was a retaliation for his refusal to agree to an improper demand by the Air Force . Specifically, Mr. Northrop charged that then-Secretary of the Air Force Stuart Symington ordered him to merge his firm with Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft Corporation, and that when he refused, an 88 million …

The Nonconformists Of Leeds In The Early Victorian Era: A Study In Social Composition, Susan L. Fales Jan 1984

The Nonconformists Of Leeds In The Early Victorian Era: A Study In Social Composition, Susan L. Fales

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the Nonconformist denominational membership in the Borough of Leeds during the early Victorian era to determine the social composition of its members. The chapel goers of Old Dissent, represented by the Unitarians, Baptists, Independents, and the Society of Friends, and New Dissent, represented by the Wesleyan Methodists, Methodist New Connexion, Primitive Methodists and the Mormons were the basis for this study. The results of the occupational, residential, family, and migration analysis revealed a surprisingly high percentage of working classes (72) represented among the Dissenters. This fact flys in the face of contemporary observation and historical investigation, which …

Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli Jan 1984

Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli

Theses and Dissertations

When Senator William Henry King took office in 1917, Utah and the nation were apprehensive about the presence of large numbers of foreign born aliens and citizens. Utah's King joined the wartime hysteria and promoted many nativistic policies directed against the foreign born population. During the post-war Red Scare he continued his crusade, concentrating on the suppression of Bolsheviks and the Industrial Workers of the World.

But when Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924--a nativistic law designed to curtail the immigration of southern and eastern Europeans--King was the bill's only opponent from the West or South. Since anti-radicalism and …

Aspects Of The Remnant Concept In The Gospel Of Matthew, Edgar A. Johnson Jan 1984

Aspects Of The Remnant Concept In The Gospel Of Matthew, Edgar A. Johnson

Dissertations

Only some aspects of the remnant concept in the christology and ecclesiology of Matthew are dealt with in this dissertation. Special attention is given to the evangelist's distinctive interpretation of Jesus as the remnant and the conceptual structures (e.g., μαθητἠς, ὲκκλησἰα, μικροἰ, πτωχοἰ, ὲκλεκτοἰ, ὸλἰγοι, and others) that cohere with the remnant concept.

A brief survey of the recent debate on the ecclesiology of Matthew and a statement on the purpose, scope, method, and plan of the dissertation are set forth in the Introduction. The need for a careful analysis which would necessitate a much more inclusive review of the …

The Course Of Study In American Education: Past, Present And Future, Marilyn B. Winters

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The purposes of this study were twofold. The first was to trace the development of curriculum guides from Germany to American educational practices of today. The second was to analyze a set of older and a set of contemporary curriculum guides. The historical section was prepared through extensive library research, analysis of old and rare guides and consultations with curriculum scholars. The analysis of guides utilized a data collection instrument developed for the study. Two sets of curriculum guides were analyzed: twenty-six older guides dated 1871-1928, obtained from a collection at Columbia University and fifty-one contemporary guides from the 1981 …

An Evaluation Of Current Procedures Of Local Conference Constituency Sessions With Recommendations For Possible Improvement, Jere D. Patzer Jan 1984

An Evaluation Of Current Procedures Of Local Conference Constituency Sessions With Recommendations For Possible Improvement, Jere D. Patzer

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

There is a growing dissatisfaction being openly expressed toward the current procedures pertaining to constituency sessions. The perception o f many constituents is that these meetings are held for the purpose of "rubber stamping" what has already been decided.

Method

In cooperation with my major professor and the Andrews University In s titu te o f Church Ministry, I decided that an evaluation instrument in the form of a survey would be sent to a sample of the delegates present at the 1980 Upper Columbia and Idaho conferences and the 1983 Upper Columbia conference constituency sessions. Some of the …

Toward The Development Of A Conscious Spirit Dependence In The Decision-Making Processes Of The Church, Stephen Gene Chinn Jan 1984

Toward The Development Of A Conscious Spirit Dependence In The Decision-Making Processes Of The Church, Stephen Gene Chinn

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The church is a divinely called, divinely directed, and divinely destined institution. Yet the church is composed of human beings who are accustomed to human institutions. These humans tend to lead the church as any other institution, unless reminded frequently of the divine aspects of the church. To emphasize these divine aspects involves focusing attention on the Holy Spirit. The Spirit links Christ, the Head, with the church body. Certain factors facilitate the Spirit's ability to communicate the desires of the Head to the church body. Foremost among these is a conscious dependence of human decision makers upon the Spirit …

Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity Applicable To The Local Pastor In The North Pacific Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Michael G. Mcbride Jan 1984

Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity Applicable To The Local Pastor In The North Pacific Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Michael G. Mcbride

Doctor of Ministry Projects

In recent years much has been written in non-Adventist and non-clergy literature concerning role conflict and role ambiguity. Adventist perceptions of role and the importance Adventists attribute to such roles in ministry may differ from the perceptions of non- Adventist clergy and writers. Hence, a specific study of Adventist clergy was necessary to determine if such a problem exists in Adventism and if the conclusions of other studies are applicable in an Adventist context.

It was proposed that an evaluation of the current status of Adventist clergy in the North Pacific Union Conference (NPUC) regarding role function and performance would …

Towards A Theology Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Meeting Place, With A Study Of Practical Implications And Applications Thereof, Eduardo Zurita Jan 1984

Towards A Theology Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Meeting Place, With A Study Of Practical Implications And Applications Thereof, Eduardo Zurita

Doctor of Ministry Projects

From the beginning mankind has selected places for adoration in which to worship the Creator. There is little information as to the kinds of facilities used by true worshipers of God in Old Testament times, until the wilderness sanctuary was built. On the other hand there is no indication in the Scriptures that the sanctuary and, later, Solomon's temple were established as model places of worship for future generations. The New Testament mentions three major kinds of places of worship: the temple, the synagogue, and the house church.

This study discusses the characteristics of places of worship during selected periods …

This study was divided into four chapters. Chapter I furnishes background information concerning the Rome School …

Time In John Cheever's The Housebreaker Of Shady Hill, Charles M. Elliott Jan 1984

Time In John Cheever's The Housebreaker Of Shady Hill, Charles M. Elliott

Masters Theses

The problem of time is a central concern in John Cheever's short story collection The Housebreaker of Shady Hill. The characters in these stories--upper-middle class suburbanites--live in a sometimes chaotic and disconnected world in which they find it difficult to attain some sense of continuity in their relationships with time. In trying to come to grips with their time and space, many of Cheever's characters express an immoderate devotion to their past, present, or future and neglect to see the bits and pieces of their experiences as interrelated. The characters who are happy and whole in these stories, however, …

"Training" And Twain's Discovery Of Its Role In His Major Novels, Gary Dale Ervin Jan 1984

"Training" And Twain's Discovery Of Its Role In His Major Novels, Gary Dale Ervin

Masters Theses

Twain's career as a novelist began with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Before that time he wrote pieces for newspapers and magazines and short stories. The success of Tom Sawyer inspired Twain to write further novels. The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn took seven years to compose, During that time, Twain was forced to face several pitfalls that often confront a writer. One of those pitfalls was a concept he called "training."

The training of an individual in effect is the raising of that individual--the instillation of values and beliefs in a person as he is raised. The process applies …

The Fragmentation Of The Ulster Unionist Party, Declan Lawson George Hall Jan 1984

The Fragmentation Of The Ulster Unionist Party, Declan Lawson George Hall

Masters Theses

In 1973, the Ulster Unionist Party fragmented after fifty years as the dominant party within Northern Ireland. However, this fragmentation did not simply occur in reaction to the events of the 1960's and early 1970's. It was a long ongoing process that can be traced back to the 1940's and 1950's.

This study is concerned with the splintering of the Ulster Unionist Party and the reasons that lay behind the division. The first contention in this thesis is that the Ulster Unionist Party was never the single united political party that it was often supposed to have been. It was …

A Comparative Study Of Frederick Manfred's Lord Grizzly And A.B. Guthrie Jr.'S The Big Sky, Carol Dornberger-Jackson Jan 1984

A Comparative Study Of Frederick Manfred's Lord Grizzly And A.B. Guthrie Jr.'S The Big Sky, Carol Dornberger-Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to do a comparative study of two books by two men who are interested in the mountain man and his period in American history. Frederick Manfred and A. B. Guthrie Jr., authors of Lord Grizzly and The Big Sky, have a deep love for the American West. Their books are about America's frontier and the dreams of the mountain men who first explored it. The mountain men's dreams were of freedom from civilization, excitement in discovery, and love for the vast sea of plains and soaring grandeur of mountains. The spirit of the wild …

Writing Creatively In First Grade, Susan Grant Raye Jan 1984

Writing Creatively In First Grade, Susan Grant Raye

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Learning to write their own words increases students' success in learning to read, provides practice in thinking skills, increases their self-concept and provides early positive attitudes about writing.

However, most writing done in first grade classrooms today consists mainly of copying from the blackboard. This is a tedious and boring task for first graders, and gives them bad attitudes about writing as they begin their school careers. Many teachers don't require young students to write their own words because of the students' inability to spell words and form grammatically correct sentences. However, if a teacher is accepting of the students' …

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis Jan 1984

Development Of West Indies College, 1907-1960: A Historical Study, Anthon C. Francis

Dissertations

Problem

There is no written history of West Indies College (WIC). What little is cited in periodicals, magazines, Palm Leaves, and other sources about this institution is insignificant, incomplete, and sometimes incorrect. For over half a century, WIC has been preparing workers for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Until 1984, however, no comprehensive history was written on the development of this important institution of higher learning.

Method

The documentary-historical method was employed in this research. Books, periodicals, school bulletins, unpublished manuscripts, board minutes, school reports and agendas, school calendars, private files, correspondence, and other relevant documents as well as oral interviews …

Relationship Between Four Temperament Types And Nineteen Spiritual Gifts, Roland L. Joachim Jan 1984

Relationship Between Four Temperament Types And Nineteen Spiritual Gifts, Roland L. Joachim

Dissertations

Problem. No studies have been found that examine empirically the possible relationship between temperament and spiritual gifts. Traditionally they have been seen as offspring of discrete disciplines, the former belonging to the realm of psychology and the latter to theology. When some writers recently hypothesized a possible correlation between temperament and spiritual gifts, others discredited the notion.

This study was undertaken to investigate the possible correlation between the traditional four temperament types and a selection of nineteen spiritual gifts of the New Testament.

Method. The data base for this study consisted of 1,067 Christian graduate students and church members from …

A Comparative Study Of The Psychological Profiles Of A Selective Sample Of Incarcerated Females Versus Non-Incarcerated Females, Karen Ladd

Dissertations

Problem. Psychological testing is used in penal institutions at the initial time of incarceration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of developing distinct psychological profiles for incarcerated females.

Method. The psychological assessment instrument employed to develop these profiles is the Sixteen Factor Personality Questionnaire (16PF). The data which were computed and analyzed to test the eight null hypotheses were provided by a selective sample group of 622 subjects in two penal institutions in Indiana.

Findings. (1) There is no significant difference between personality profiles of incarcerated white females who are property offenders and personality profiles of …

Frederick Griggs, Seventh-Day Adventist Educator And Administrator, Arnold Colin Reye Jan 1984

Frederick Griggs, Seventh-Day Adventist Educator And Administrator, Arnold Colin Reye

Dissertations

Problem. Frederick Griggs was a pivotal figure in the development of Seventh-day Adventist education. As an administrator he was influential in clarifying educational goals, defining the scope of the educational program, and building the structure and organization necessary to achieve and maintain an educational system. Despite his considerable contribution to Adventist education, there has been no comprehensive investigation of his life.

Method. This study has investigated Grigg's life from the perspective of his work as an educational administrator. A historical-documentary method of research has been used. Major sources have been collections of official correspondence; minutes of committees, boards, and faculties; …

A Theological Assessment Of Paulo Freire's View Of Education In Terms Of The Perspective Of Juergen Moltmann, Janice Davies Jan 1984

A Theological Assessment Of Paulo Freire's View Of Education In Terms Of The Perspective Of Juergen Moltmann, Janice Davies

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Education helps to shape the values and attitudes of students, and is therefore important in determining the values of society. For this reason, it is important for teachers to be aware of the philosophy of education which informs their teaching methods. It is also helpful if they are aware of other philosophies of education in order to get some perspective on their own views. To this end I have taken a critical look at the philosophy of Paulo Freire, an educator with excellent credentials who has some throught-provoking views on education. He is a Christian so he can provide a …

American Fundamentalism And Nuclear Deterrence A Critique, Glen Robert Amy Jan 1984

American Fundamentalism And Nuclear Deterrence A Critique, Glen Robert Amy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This paper is an attempt to deal with two trends which have recently received a great deal of attention. One trend is an increasing questioning of the role which nuclear deterrence plays in securing a better world for our own and future generations. The other trend is the rise of the New Christian Right and its mixing of religion and American patriotism. These two trends have come face to face in the New Christian Right’s emphasis on restoring American superiority in its relative position to the Soviet Union—a country which they believe is the source of a monolithic Communist threat. …

Imagining God A Critical Review Of The Theology And Method Of Gordon D. Kaufman, H. Victor Froese Jan 1984

Imagining God A Critical Review Of The Theology And Method Of Gordon D. Kaufman, H. Victor Froese

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The first four chapters constitute a historical survey of Kaufman’s works. My thesis is that the development of Kaufman’s thought can best be understood as his attempt to take a consistently historicist position vis-à-vis the issues that present themselves to him. By “historicism” I mean that way of thinking that takes the categories presupposed in history (linear time, empirical space, human freedom and other derivative notions) as its primary ones as opposed to the classical terms of essence, nature, and substance. The survey involves a discussion of Kaufman’s Ph.D. thesis (ch. 1), his systematic theological efforts (ch. 2), his search …

A Comparison Of The Theology Of Salvation In The Teachings Of Martin Luther And Joseph Smith, Jr, Gordon Frank Hodgins Jan 1984

A Comparison Of The Theology Of Salvation In The Teachings Of Martin Luther And Joseph Smith, Jr, Gordon Frank Hodgins

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is a comparative survey on the teachings of Martin Luther and Joseph Smith, Jr. about salvation. Biographical material is also examined to understand the historic influences upon their teachings. A number of similarities in teaching are noted, including belief in Jesus Christ, the need for faith, God’s grace is unmerited, good works follow faith, and there will be a divine Judgment. Areas of disagreement include predestination vs free will, the means of confessing faith in Christ, importance of future life vs present life, personal vs social nature of salvation, and the nature of priesthood as related to salvation.

Emil Brunner's Theological Anthropology A Neo-Thomistic Critique, Arden Paul Schellert Jan 1984

Emil Brunner's Theological Anthropology A Neo-Thomistic Critique, Arden Paul Schellert

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

1. This thesis is an examination and critique of Emil Brunner’s theological anthropology from the Neo-Thomistic perspective. Emil Brunner’s doctrine of man is examined under three thematic headings: first, man and knowledge (or theology and the philosophy of science), second, man and God (ontology), and third, man in the world (ethical implications). In the first section Brunner argues that man can only be properly understood in light of the complete revealed Christian system. This is because man is in some way separated from his origin in God and engaged in persistent rebellion against Him. Thus, the human quest for knowledge …

Real People Tell The Whole Story: Dialogue And Characterization In Malory's Morte Darthur, Anne Woehrle Jan 1984

Real People Tell The Whole Story: Dialogue And Characterization In Malory's Morte Darthur, Anne Woehrle

Honors Papers

Ever since Eugene Vinaver published his edition of the of Sir Thomas Malory (generally known by the title apparently given it by its first publisher, William Caxton), critics have disputed the interpretation that governed his editing. Vinaver based his edition on the "Winchester Manuscript," discovered in 1934, contending that Morte Darthur was written as a series of eight separate "tales" and has therefore nothing that resembles the comprehensive structure of a novel, a play. or even a simple romance. He based his argument on features of the manuscript, such as explcits and decorated letters marking tale divisions, and on inconsistencies …
