E. Taylor's Use Of Canticles, Clella J. Camp Jan 1985

E. Taylor's Use Of Canticles, Clella J. Camp

Masters Theses

In Sermon IV of the Christographia Edward Taylor makes the following statement.

Man, the last in the creation, is the glory of all elementary nature. The image of God in man, the last draught of God upon him, is the glory of Man. Come to artifical instinces, and here it holds; All things of less considerations are first touched on, but that which is last entered on is of the greatest concern…And so it is in the things of God!

Because those things that are constantly fixed in “the last place” are the most complete and the most valued of …

Nature Vs Society In The Works Of Stephen Crane, Rodney R. Parker Jan 1985

Nature Vs Society In The Works Of Stephen Crane, Rodney R. Parker

Masters Theses

The five works of Stephen Crane I chose to discuss in this thesis are: "The Open Boat," "A Mystery of Heroism," "The Blue Hotel," Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, and The Red Badge of Courage. All of these works are representative of the fictional vision of Stephen Crane. A persistent theme that Crane uses in virtually all of his stories is the relationship between the human and the natural worlds. The world of nature is one of indifference. It shows no interest in the activies of mankind, and is, in fact, incapable of doing so. But Crane's …

The Effects Of Language Processing Strategies Upon Reading Comprehension, Kathy Ann Kirby Jan 1985

The Effects Of Language Processing Strategies Upon Reading Comprehension, Kathy Ann Kirby

Masters Theses

In 1975, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was passed providing educational services for children with exceptionalities. Learning disabilities was one of those exceptionalities whose definition used a language disorder as its major criteria for the identification and classification of a specific learning disabilities. The inclusion of language disorders within its definition brought about greater interest in language and the understanding of language development, acquisition and processing and how these aspects related with academic learning, particularly with reading.

The purpose of this study was to address the issue of language processing strategies in the remediating of language deficits and …

Egypt: The Shifting Cornerstone To The East-West Balance Of Power In 1956, David C. Dalgaard

Masters Theses

The seizure and subsequent war over the Suez Canal in 1956 is the major theme of this work. The effects on the international situation and world events are analyzed. The major participants, Great Britain under Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden, France under Premier Guy Mollet, Israel under Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, and Egypt under President Gamal Nasser, are developed from their personal aspirations and goals surrounding their actions.

These actions led to the chain of events which disrupted the bipolar balance of world power. The United States' containment policy was breeched. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles did not adequately …

The Philosophy Of Christian Service And Its Practice In The Seventh-Day Adventist Senior Academies Of The United States During The 1979-1980 School Year, Edward M. Norton Jan 1985

The Philosophy Of Christian Service And Its Practice In The Seventh-Day Adventist Senior Academies Of The United States During The 1979-1980 School Year, Edward M. Norton

Dissertations

Problem. Service-learning in the educational system of the Seventh-day Adventist church in the United States, as is true in public education, generally has been overshadowed by a subject-matter orientation. It was the purpose of this study to determine the level of practice of service to others in the secondary schools of the Adventist church in the United States, to research the principles necessary to write a philosophy of service, and to specify the organizational components required for service projects.

Method. Two types of closely related research were used in this study : descriptive analysis and descriptive developmental. A descriptive analysis …

Perceptions Of The Role Of The Bible Class In Four Christian Liberal Arts Colleges: Considered In The Context Of Conflicting Rationales, Jaime Castrejon Jan 1985

Perceptions Of The Role Of The Bible Class In Four Christian Liberal Arts Colleges: Considered In The Context Of Conflicting Rationales, Jaime Castrejon

Dissertations

Problem. The four Seventh-day Adventist senior colleges in Inter-America aim at training Christian professionals who will serve the church either directly on its payroll or indirectly as devoted Christian professional laymen. The colleges are doubly challenged to maintain academic excellence while providing spiritual nourishment and commitment. The Bible class is central to this approach to education. Adventist leaders and educators, however, have not given serious study to the questions arising from this practice. No guidelines exist for determining an adequate amount of Bible classes. Each institution sets its own requirements which results in great disparity among them in this regard. …

A Comparison Of The Ecclesiology Of Representatives Of The Lutheran And Helvetic Reformers, Chun Kwan Lee Jan 1985

A Comparison Of The Ecclesiology Of Representatives Of The Lutheran And Helvetic Reformers, Chun Kwan Lee

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There are two major areas that need to be investigated. The first concerns the ecclesiology of the four reformers selected for this study. It must be noted that the Reformation was not the work of isolated individuals, but a movement caused by the joint efforts of various persons and schools of thought. A comparison among these reformers is therefore very much needed in order to gain a better picture of the era. The following study will therefore analyse the various aspects of the ecclesiology of these four reformers and comparisons will be made accordingly.

Secondly, how the reformers' convictions of …

The Stations Of The Cross: A Calculated Trap?, Susan D. Shantz Jan 1985

The Stations Of The Cross: A Calculated Trap?, Susan D. Shantz

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A popular Catholic devotion most familiar in images, texts, and rituals, the Stations of the Cross contains the via cruces paradigm which is at the heart of Western Christian culture. In the following text an account of the historical development of the fourteen episode devotion provides a framework from which to examine in detail four visual interpretations of the Stations of the Cross by contemporary Canadian artists. The unusual serial nature and mythic content of the sequence lent a more ritualistic quality to the creative process of each artist so that, in the extended time and space spent working on …

Hosea's Contribution To Israel's Covenant Thought, Byron L. Wheaton Jan 1985

Hosea's Contribution To Israel's Covenant Thought, Byron L. Wheaton

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Hosea’s Contribution to Israel’s Covenant Thought is an exploration of the unique contribution that Hosea made to the development of Israel’s covenant understanding. The study begins by surveying the meaning and development of covenant thought in the Old Testament with particular reference to the “gracious” and “conditional” divisions. It then examines Hosea’s understanding of covenant based upon the concepts of emet, hesed, and da ‘at Elohim concluding that Hosea perceived covenant as a relationship of steadfast love. This relationship originates in the incomprehensible love of God and is central to Hosea’s whole message. Hosea’s use of the marriage image to …

The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine Jan 1985

The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine

Honors Theses

In the course of English history many legal courts have been established and abolished. There were two types of legal courts: common law and prerogative. Commonlaw courts had their basis in fmndamental laws and custom while pre- rogative courts were established by the king's prerogative for different reasons. Most of the prerogative courts were developed during the medieval or early modern period and were abolished during the Stuart reign. One such prerogative court was the Court of the Star Chamber. It can trace its beginnings to the medieval period and was abolished during the reign of Charles I. The Court …

From Social Reform To Social Science: The Women's Educational And Industrial Union Of Boston, 1877-1912, Charlotte H.L. Briggs Jan 1985

From Social Reform To Social Science: The Women's Educational And Industrial Union Of Boston, 1877-1912, Charlotte H.L. Briggs

Honors Papers

Founded in 1877, the Women's Educational and Industrial Union of Boston is still in existence today. Although a pioneer in the fields of social reform, industrial education, women's organizations, and social science, it has long been neglected by historians. The first thirty-five years of the Union's history were particularly important in establishing a diversity of activities and a set of priorities. As an organization committed to mutual aid and benevolence, the WEIU, on the one hand, provided fellowship and an outlet for the energies of social-reform minded women, and, on the other hand, provided information and crucial services to the …

Austrian National Socialism And The Anschluss, George R. Bent Jan 1985

Austrian National Socialism And The Anschluss, George R. Bent

Honors Papers

The Anschluss of Austria and the greater German Reich is often pinpointed as the beginning of Nazi Germany's attempt for European Hegemony. With the annexation of Austria came an improved strategic position regarding Czechoslovakia, Yugoslovakia, and Hungary, and would provide Hitler with a springboard from which he could launch his thrust into Eastern Europe. The road toward Anschluss was a difficult one to travel: Germany needed to be wary of the threat from the Western Powers during her quest for a greater German Reich, and also had to consider the Austrian domestic situation as she laid plans for a union. …

Reflections From A Soul Of Glass, Mills Lyon Jan 1985

Reflections From A Soul Of Glass, Mills Lyon

Theses

I have long had a "love-affair" with photography. As a teacher of photography and a "semi-professional" photographer, I desired to further my study of photography by seeking a master's degree in this field. In so doing, I have had many opportunities to examine my feelings toward this subject and my relationship with it.

The purpose of this paper is to explore both my technical and aesthetic relationships with photography. In examining these two areas, I have also looked at my photographic past as well as the photographic involvement in my present way of living.

In Chapter One I examine what …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The photographer Gertrude Kasebier (1852-1934) is best known for her affiliation with Alfred Stieglitz and the Photo-Secession. However, as this study shows, she also conducted a successful career as a studio portraitist in New York, and contributed to popular illustrated magazines.

Chapters are devoted to Mrs. Kasebier's professional development, including her education at Pratt Institute, her successes in photographic publications and exhibitions, and her friendships with such photographers and artists as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, F. Holland Day, Baron Adolf de Meyer, Robert Demachy, Frances Benjamin Johnston, and Auguste Rodin. Her portraits of Rodin and his studio are analyzed.

A Descriptive Catalog Of A Collection Of 'Comedias Sueltas' In The Hispanic Society Of America (Volumes I And Ii), Szilvia E. Szmuk

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The impetus behind this dissertation was to bring to light 475 individual comedias sueltas bound in 26 volumes and entered under the single subject heading: "Teatro espanol" in the library of the Hispanic Society of America.

Chapbooks were a printers' genre during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries popular throughout Europe and they encompassed all types of literature. This collection of Spanish sueltas consists only of comedias, bailes, and autos, mostly eighteenth-century reprints of Golden Age plays, and contemporary editions of comedias nuevas and sainetes.

The emphasis of this study is on the sueltas as physical objects, i.e., the work constitutes …

The Iss On Campus: The Intercollegiate Socialist Society, 1905-1921, John Wertheimer Jan 1985

The Iss On Campus: The Intercollegiate Socialist Society, 1905-1921, John Wertheimer

Honors Papers

"Student activism" is a commonly used-and somewhat loaded-phrase. In the mind of the modern observer, the phrase inspires images of peace signs, love beads, sit-ins, and Kent State. Student activism, however, has not always been true to this imagery. The tradition of student groups devoted to political, ideological ends extends back to the early years of the twentieth century. The group that established this tradition also forms the subject of this study: the Intercollegiate Socialist Society (ISS).

The ISS was founded in 1905. It led no rallies or sit-ins; nor were any of its members martyred at the hands of …

The Ellet Family And Riverine Warfare In The West--1861-1865, Jesse L. Chapman Jan 1985

The Ellet Family And Riverine Warfare In The West--1861-1865, Jesse L. Chapman

History Theses & Dissertations

During the American Civil War the centuries-old concept of the naval ram as a military weapon was revived. The most active theater of battle for naval rams was the Western rivers. The Mississippi River in the vicinity of Vicksburg saw the first modern instance of ram fleet meeting ram fleet. To combat Confederate attacks on union vessels operating on the rivers, the Mississippi Marine Brigade was added to the Ram Fleet in 1863. This brigade was a combined force of infantry, cavalry, and artillery with naval transports which would land and attack at the first sign of Confederate activity. This …

Saudi Bureaucracy And Max Weber's Ideal Type, Abdulla Ahmed Al-Fares Jan 1985

Saudi Bureaucracy And Max Weber's Ideal Type, Abdulla Ahmed Al-Fares

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is passing through a period of historical transition. Vast changes are taking place in the country’s economy and society. To a great extent Saudi Arabia's dramatic leap into the twentieth century is a result of the tremendous new wealth which has come into the country as a result of the discovery and exploitation of oil. This rapid spurt of development has created unexpected difficulties for the country and for its administrative system, but the new wealth has also provided the country with the means to deal with its problems. It is my intention in this …

An Examination Of Couple Break-Ups Among Young Adults, Dorothy Lee Jan 1985

An Examination Of Couple Break-Ups Among Young Adults, Dorothy Lee

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The break-up of couple relationships is becoming an increasingly common life event. Weiss (1975) claims that among married couples, a period of separation is a common rather than an exceptional experience. "If we assume that the rate of separation in the future will be the same as it is now, it is a safe prediction that about half (somewhere between 45 and 60 percent) of American marriages now made will at some point sustain a separation” < 1> (1975:11). Glick and Norton (1979) suggest that the current frequency of divorce is causing it to be seen as an almost normal stage of …

The Academic Achievement Of Chinese-American Fluent English Proficient And Non-Minority Background Intermediate Grade Students (Bilingual, Asian-American), Edmund W. Lee

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

More than a decade has passed since the United States Supreme Court made its historic decision in Lau v. Nichols on January 21, 1974. Ruling in favor of the non-English-speaking Chinese plaintiffs, the Court upheld earlier guidelines established by the office for Civil Rights for school districts with more than five percent national origin-minority group children. In delivering the Court's opinion, Justice Douglas reiterated these words of J. Stanley Pottinger, former director of OCR:

And Then The Letting Go, Kim Silveira Bowers Jan 1985

And Then The Letting Go, Kim Silveira Bowers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The novel And Then The Letting Go involves protagonists Samantha Evans' simultaneous discoveries of her husband Don's infidelity, her own unplanned pregnancy, and the pregnancy of her unmarried, best friend Regina. These pivotal events act as emotional catalysts, ejecting Sam out of the passive restraints of her unhappy marriage into a frightening, yet exhilarating, life of active participation.

Within a nine month temporal framework, the novel explores a period of psychological gestation which results in the birth of her new Identity. Sam Evans passes from frozen passivity ("The nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs--") into a chilling confrontation with the "Hour …

Violence In Southern Literature, Lucy Katherine Tejero Jan 1985

Violence In Southern Literature, Lucy Katherine Tejero

Theses

This thesis explores the recurring theme of violence in the works of key Southern writers—William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, and Robert Penn Warren. It argues that violence in Southern literature is not merely sensational or gratuitous, but deeply tied to the region’s historical, social, and cultural realities, particularly the legacies of slavery, the Civil War, and entrenched racial hierarchies. By situating each author within this context, the study demonstrates how acts of violence in their fiction serve as a lens through which to examine moral conflict, social change, and human frailty.

Faulkner’s depictions of brutality are shown …

A Critical Analysis And Adaptation Of The Woolgatherer, Dennis A. Wood Jan 1985

A Critical Analysis And Adaptation Of The Woolgatherer, Dennis A. Wood

Theses

This thesis by Dennis A. Wood presents a critical analysis and creative adaptation of The Woolgatherer by William Mastrosimone, examining how a contemporary play can be reshaped using classical dramatic principles. The study explores the transformation of Mastrosimone’s script through the lens of Aristotelian poetics and other historic and modern theories of drama and play direction. Wood interrogates themes such as obscenity, nature, audience engagement, and moral content, advocating for the use of “masked obscenity” and “unmasked nature” as tools to elevate the play to a more universal and potentially classical form.

The thesis divides its analysis into theoretical and …

Kiss Me Kate: The Costume Design Process And The Costuming Problems In The Small Costume Shop, Carlene N.(Niki) Juncker Jan 1985

Kiss Me Kate: The Costume Design Process And The Costuming Problems In The Small Costume Shop, Carlene N.(Niki) Juncker

Theses

In my process of choosing the culminating project for the MFA degree, I originally planned two such projects: a production's costumes in performance presentation and a draft for a tentatively titled "The Art and Craft of Costume Design." Shortly after this decision, the well known designer-costumers, Liz Covey and Rosemary Ingram, published The Costume Designer's Handbook. This book quite adequately covered the material I had planned to include in my projected volume. I then reconsidered my projects and eventually decided to combine my ideas into one two-fold project: a thesis covering all the problems of design and execution of the …

Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios Jan 1985

Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dichotic listening tasks have been used extensively to establish the left cerebral hemisphere as dominant for linguistic processing. Dichotic stress has also been used to investigate lateralization patterns for individuals who speak more than one language and if those patterns differ from those found in monolingual speakers. Most investigations of this nature, with both monolingual and bilingual subjects, have found a right ear advantage (REA) for linguistic processing. Voice onset time (VOT) is the acoustic parameter primarily responsible for the categorical discrimination of stop consonants in a number of different languages, including English and Spansih [sic]. It has been found …

Master's Piano Recital, Lixun Zhong Jan 1985

Master's Piano Recital, Lixun Zhong

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In 1722, Bach completed his first volume of twenty-four preludes and fugues in all the major and minor keys in chromatic order, entitled "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier" (The Well-Tempered Clavier). In 1742, he finished a second series of these works which became known as "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Book II." The preludes in Book I display a free, nearly improvisatory style, not bound to any set form. In Book II, Bach chose various standard keyboard structures as a basis for the preludes, with the result that they exemplify many late Baroque keyboard forms and evidence an astounding diversity of styles and moods. …
