Four Voices Of Pound In Cantos I-Xvii, Malcolm D. Childress Jan 1986

Four Voices Of Pound In Cantos I-Xvii, Malcolm D. Childress

Honors Papers

Between 1922 and 1924, Ezra Pound completed the first sixteen Cantos. He had published three Cantos in 1917, but suspended work on them shortly thereafter. It was not until 1922, after he had moved to Paris that he resumed work on the Cantos, piecing together what now stand as the first sixteen by the summer of 1924. This places the creation of Cantos I-XVI at the same time as the writing of Ulysses and "The Wasteland." Cantos XVII-XXVII were published in 1929. In July of 1922 Pound wrote of the first Cantos in a letter: "The first 11 cantos are …

Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen Jan 1986

Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces the origin, development, and decline, from 1852 to 1904, of Salt Lake County's judicial precincts. A precinct functioned as the basic subdivision of county government. Its boundaries were generally coterminous with those of local communities. It was established to allow for a degree of local control by the people.
Chapter two reveals that precinct justices experienced over time a marked decline in socio-political prominence. This is largely due to legislative statutes that decreased their jurisdictional powers. Chapter three examines the evolution of precinct boundaries. It is demonstrated that geographic distribution of individuals played a major role in …

Linear Analysis Of Selected Posttonal Works Of Arnold Schoenberg: Toward An Application Of Schenkerian Concepts To Music Of The Posttonal Era (And) String Quartet, No. 2 (Original Composition), Edward M. Smaldone

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The analysis of posttonal music is approached through a method (which originated with Henry Weinberg) utilizing Schenker's approach to tonal music as a conceptual model. This method differs from all other methods of analysis in that voice leading is combined with a unique approach to nontonal harmony. The presentation of the analytical method is given a historical perspective through the analysis of "Jimbo's Lullaby," by Debussy. There follows detailed analyses of Op. 15 no. 1 (The Book of the Hanging Gardens) and Six Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19 by Arnold Schoenberg.

Part II of the dissertation is an …

Ibsen's Stagecraft: The Symbolic Setting, Julie Lorraine Thompson Jan 1986

Ibsen's Stagecraft: The Symbolic Setting, Julie Lorraine Thompson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Henrik Ibsen's critics have long acknowledged his mastery of the stage, that is, his use of the physical and off-stage settings, architectural details, props, and space as symbol. However, study of Ibsen's symbolic settings has been limited to one play or to aspects of his stagecraft in general terms. Peter Tenant's Ibsen's Dramatic Technique discusses the settings and stage directions of his major plays as they relate to plot and theme. In Patterns of Ibsen's Middle Plays, Richard Hornby studies the settings and scenic background only for An Enemy of the People. Edward Beyer in Ibsen's The Man And His …

Thales, Homer, Hesiod And Heidegger: A Reevaluation Of The Mythic World View, Brooks Robinson Jan 1986

Thales, Homer, Hesiod And Heidegger: A Reevaluation Of The Mythic World View, Brooks Robinson

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

What is the meaning of life? What is truth? What is meant by virtue and freedom? Rich and demanding questions like these supplied the original impetus to philosophy. From Aristotle to Descartes and into the twentieth century there have been hundreds of aggressive practitioners who believe that man’s systematic search for the answers to these questions will eventually unlock the secrets of the universe. Developing alongside philosophy was another discipline which operated under a radically different set of assumptions. Adherents to this world view burn with the same passion as do the philosophers except that their approach to life is …

Psychotherapists And Child Abuse Reporting Laws: The Dilemma Of Role Conflict, Sandra J. Noteboom Jan 1986

Psychotherapists And Child Abuse Reporting Laws: The Dilemma Of Role Conflict, Sandra J. Noteboom

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The recent changes in public policy which affect mental health practitioners indicate an increasing perception on the part of the policy makers that the once inviolate and legal grounds of confidentiality in the therapeutic relationship are outweighed in some cases by the need for protection of certain members of society. This shift in role for therapists creates certain situations which may be perceived as dilemmas by the therapists. Changes in the accountability of the therapist are occurring rapidly, and in the direction of increased responsibility to society over responsibility to clients. This study will ascertain the degree to which therapists …

Creative Movement For Everyone, Robbie Scoggins Jan 1986

Creative Movement For Everyone, Robbie Scoggins

Theses

Robbie Scoggins’ thesis explores the transformative potential of creative movement and inclusive dance education. Centered on her culminating project, Bodies in Motion, the work documents the process of conceptualizing, choreographing, rehearsing, and staging four unique dance compositions performed by beginning students. These pieces—ranging from rhythmic rounds to satirical mimes and collaborative visual works—served not only as performance but as a pedagogical tool. Scoggins reflects on her evolving philosophy that dance should be a democratic art form, open to all regardless of technical training or physical ideal. Drawing from historical precedents like Isadora Duncan and educators like Barbara Mettler, she …

Observaciones Sobre Don Quijote Y Sancho Panza, Nora Ollerini Guevara Jan 1986

Observaciones Sobre Don Quijote Y Sancho Panza, Nora Ollerini Guevara

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

I have chosen to analyze several characteristics of Don Quijote, and his squire, Sancho Panza. I have observed that Don Quijote is on the side of the underdog, and tries to do justice in the world from personal need. Sancho tries to reason with him, and constantly reminds him of reality. But Don Quijote lives in his make-believe world of a past age of chivalry, and one can say that throughout the episodes he is out of place, and time until he recovers from his illness in the second part of the novel. He has created the illness himself by …

William Rimmer's Concept Of The Heroic Male Nude, Malinda Wyatt Jan 1986

William Rimmer's Concept Of The Heroic Male Nude, Malinda Wyatt

Theses and Dissertations

William Rimmer is an enigmatic figure in the history of American art. Works created by him are the single exception to an otherwise undistinguished body of mid-nineteenth century sculpture. Yet, Rimmer was virtually ignored by the art public of his generation. In his own lifetime the considerable skill and talent Rimmer evinced as a sculptor and draftsman were overshadowed by the novelty of his medical practice and teaching career. Rimmer's only true fame was to come not as an artist, but from the popular success of his "art anatomy" lecture courses in Boston and New York. Acknowledgement of the excellence …

Religious Sanctuaries In Ancient Cyprus During The Iron Age, Lenia Chamberlain Jan 1986

Religious Sanctuaries In Ancient Cyprus During The Iron Age, Lenia Chamberlain

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The end the Late Bronze (or Cypriote) period in Cyprus occurred shortly after 1100 BC, when an earthquake caused widespread destruction on the island. This coincided with the arrival of the last wave of refugees from Mycenaean Greece, who took advantage of the destruction of the Late Cypriote cities to establish their own colonies; this colonization is relfected in the foundation legends of most of the Iron Age cities.

The Iron Age in Cyprus lasted from about 1050 BC to about 475 BC, and is divided into two major periods, the Cypro-Geometric period (1050-750 BC), and the Cypro-Archaic period (750-475 …

The Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, 1955-1968: The Implications Of The Social Dimensions Of Faith For A Missionary Endeavour, Erin Frances Phillips

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

During the late fifties the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society worked in missions in Latin America, the British Caribbean, and Asia. Their work was primarily parish work. They gave religious instruction, administered the sacraments, and cared for the pastoral needs of their parishoners. In countries with sizeable non-Catholic populations they tried various means to attract people to the Church. In countries with Catholic majorities they experimented with a variety of methods for providing the sacraments and instruction to large numbers of people. Occasionally they became involved in running co-operatives; the reasons they gave for this work emphasized its spiritual benefits.

Clarissa's mother, Mrs. Harlowe, aims at family peace, hoping to coax Clarissa into the same sort of obedience to patriarchal authority that she has adopted as her lifestyle.
