The Significance Of Female Imagery In The Book Of Proverbs Wisdom And Wife Compared, Anna Doris Piskorowski Jan 1987

The Significance Of Female Imagery In The Book Of Proverbs Wisdom And Wife Compared, Anna Doris Piskorowski

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is an examination of parallel female imagery found in the Book of Proverbs, specifically that of Wisdom personified (Chapters 1-9) and the ideal wife (31:10-31). A discussion of their common traits is based on criteria taken directly from the literary text. A brief discourse introduces the reader to the problematic dating of the poetic forms in Proverbs. The main body of the thesis details the various categories of comparison: direct literal parallels, literal and thematic parallels, thematic parallels and differences. The primary aim of this study is to determine the importance of these many points of comparison, to …

A Study Of Marital Adjustment And Division Of Household Tasks Among Dual Earner Couples, Jovonne Price Jan 1987

A Study Of Marital Adjustment And Division Of Household Tasks Among Dual Earner Couples, Jovonne Price

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this investigation is to complete research on dual earner families. The focus is to ascertain if a relationship may be found between marital adjustment and the agreement on division of household tasks within a dual earner marriage. This study asks several important questions. First, in dual earner families, is marital adjustment related to sharing household responsibilities, or to agreement on task division (i.e. equitability vs. complementary agreement)? Second, is there a difference between stated attitudes and experienced behaviors in the division of household tasks, and might this contribute to marital adjustment (i.e. ideal vs. real)? Hopefully, any …

The Commercialization Of The Colloquial Voice: Raymond Carver And The Minimalist Aesthetic, Cara Diaconoff Jan 1987

The Commercialization Of The Colloquial Voice: Raymond Carver And The Minimalist Aesthetic, Cara Diaconoff

Honors Papers

In American critical writing of the last decade, the term "minimalism", which first came into use to describe a particular aesthetic, a distinctive style of art, has begun to be used in a very different context. In literary reviews and essays it is now most frequently employed as a convenient critical label, a catchall phrase which purportedly refers to a new "reigning style" in contemporary fiction. This style in turn is generally thought to be the exclusive domain of a certain generation of writers. Roughly, the birth years of this generation could be said to span the period 1935-50; thus, …

Eustache Deschamps' "L'Art De Dictier", Deborah M. Sinnreich Jan 1987

Eustache Deschamps' "L'Art De Dictier", Deborah M. Sinnreich

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

L'Art de dictier, written in 1392 by the prolific courtier-poet Eustache Deschamps, is the first ars poetica ever written in French. It provides invaluable insights into medieval poetics as perceived by a respected medieval poet.

L'Art de dictier is composed of two sections: a brief introductory liberal arts treatise and a prescriptive poetics devoted to the lyric. In the introduction, music is divided into two sub-categories. Deschamps calls instrumental music "artificial music" because he feels it can be taught to anyone. "Natural music," in contrast, is poetry, for only those who are inspired to compose it can do so. …

Ives On His Own Terms: An Explication, A Theory Of Pitch Organization, And A New Critical Edition For The "3-Page Sonata", Carol Kitzes Baron Jan 1987

Ives On His Own Terms: An Explication, A Theory Of Pitch Organization, And A New Critical Edition For The "3-Page Sonata", Carol Kitzes Baron

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Ives's musical vision is tied to the expression of programmatic content. He believed that all music is program music. The first part of this study, "An Explication," shows how the extramusical dimensions are articulated in the formal design of the music. The formal, motivic, textural, and tonal techniques relate to the program. The program for the 3-Page Sonata is found in three literary sources: a note Ives pinned to his copy of the first edition, the marginal notes on the composing score, and "Memo 5" from Ives's Memos, which contains a parody of the writing of the critic W. J. …

Revolutions Off Off Broadway, 1959-1969: A Critical Study Of Changes In Structure, Character, Language, And Theme In Experimental Drama In New York City, Alexis Greene

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze and categorize the approaches to structure, character, language, and theme that make the dramaturgy of certain playwrights writing for the Off Broadway theatre during the 1960s revolutionary in contrast to the dramaturgy of the majority of American playwrights of the 1950s. The playwrights under discussion include George Birimisa, Kenneth Bernard, Kenneth Brown, Rosalyn Drexler, Grant Duay, Tom Eyen, Maria Irene Fornes, Paul Foster, John Guare, A. R. Gurney, Jr., William M. Hoffman, Kenneth Koch, Charles Ludlam, Murray Mednick, Joel Oppenheimer, Rochelle Owens, Tom Sankey, Sam Shepard, David Starkweather, Ronald Tavel, Megan Terry, …

The Use Of Singing To Improve Articulatory Accuracy In A Child With Apraxia And Dysarthria, Elizabeth Eileen Bailey Jan 1987

The Use Of Singing To Improve Articulatory Accuracy In A Child With Apraxia And Dysarthria, Elizabeth Eileen Bailey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A single subject, diagnosed as having severe oral apraxia and dysarthria, participated in an eight-week research experiment designed to study the effects of singing on speech articulation. A simultaneous treatment design was used in which the subject participated in both the e xperimental and control conditions. In the control condition spoken words were repeated by the subject, while in the experimental condition the words were sung. The words used were the lyrics to two popular folk songs. Articulatory accuracy (intelligibility) was judged by two graduate level speech therapists, based on audiotape samples of the subject's responses, recorded on a "Language …

Figure Eight : A Collection Of Short Stories, Martha Kilgore Rice Jan 1987

Figure Eight : A Collection Of Short Stories, Martha Kilgore Rice

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Most of the eight stories in this collection are about individuals who are alienated. They are unable or unwilling to break through the barriers that separate them from others. The stories are contemporary; the settings are urban/suburban. The past plays an important part in defining and limiting the present, and fantasy sometimes replaces reality as an option for dealing with the loneliness of isolation. Direct confrontation is another option. Desire for power and the need for assertiveness are important elements in the action of the stories. By contrast, retreat into submission may become the sad alternative.

The voices change with …

Italo Calvino: A Writer Fascinated With Form, Ann Ellsworth Jan 1987

Italo Calvino: A Writer Fascinated With Form, Ann Ellsworth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Italo Calvino is a twentieth-century writer whose work reflects a transition from realism or neorealism to postmodernism. This thesis will explore how that shift occurred. I will show how Calvino's early fascination with form, especially the techniques of oral storytelling, led to a later focus on form in his boldly experimental works. In the first chapter I will point out the early signs of fantasy in Calvino's neorealistic novel, The Path to the Nest of Spiders. This novel's affinity to folktales and use of fantasy foretell Calvino's subsequent contributions to these literary genres. I will discuss how Calvino's work with …

The Development Of Rhythm In Young Children Aged One To Four Years, Davidah Koseff Jan 1987

The Development Of Rhythm In Young Children Aged One To Four Years, Davidah Koseff

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study was to assess how young children between the ages of one and four years develop rhythm skills. The project was a pilot study conducted at 11 preschools and day care centers in Stockton, California, and included 60 children. Thirty behaviors comprised the test of various aspects of rhythmic performance. The children were video-taped and the tapes were then analyzed. By examining how many children in a particular age group could perform a particular task, a sequence became apparent. This body of research can now be used as a basis for further studies with the aim …

The Orff Approach To Music Education: Objectives And Materials For Grades One Through Six, Barbara P. Spieler Jan 1987

The Orff Approach To Music Education: Objectives And Materials For Grades One Through Six, Barbara P. Spieler

Theses

This study investigates the relationship between skill objectives in the Orff-Schulwerk approach to elementary music education and Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. The research begins with a detailed analysis of skill objectives as outlined in Music for Children, the foundational curriculum series for Orff-Schulwerk. These objectives are systematically ordered and examined for their developmental structure. The analysis reveals a clear sequence, beginning with fundamental abilities such as speech and rhythmic movement, progressing toward more advanced competencies including instrumental performance, melodic improvisation, and ensemble coordination.

The second stage of the study maps these Orff-Schulwerk objectives onto Piaget’s stages of …

Chapter Two: Process To Production, Roger Tackette Jan 1987

Chapter Two: Process To Production, Roger Tackette

Theses

This thesis documents the directorial process for a student-produced staging of Neil Simon’s play, Chapter Two. The project, directed by graduate student Roger Tackette, served as his culminating master's degree project for Lindenwood College's Performing Arts Department. It explores the multifaceted journey of a theatrical production, from initial concept to final performance.

The thesis delves into various aspects of the production, including pre-production work, which involved developing a conceptual basis for the play and analyzing the script using Francis Hodge's framework. The document details the audition process, casting decisions, and the five-step rehearsal method employed by the director. It …

Chekhov And Friends: The Director's Role In A Work-In-Progress, Matthew S. Schliesman Jan 1987

Chekhov And Friends: The Director's Role In A Work-In-Progress, Matthew S. Schliesman

Theses

This MFA thesis by Matthew S. Schliesman, titled “Chekhov and Friends: The Director’s Role in a Work-in-Progress,” documents a creative reinterpretation of Anton Chekhov’s one-act plays The Bear and The Proposal through the lens of 20th-century television variety entertainment. Inspired by The Carol Burnett Show, Schliesman constructs a fictional Russian vaudeville performer—Karoltina Burnetskaya—whose variety show provides a narrative framework for the two Chekhov plays and additional material, including a musical number and an improvised short story adaptation. Set in 1906 Russia during a time of political unrest, the show blends period elements with modern theatrical conventions and humor, aiming …

Directing Angel Street, John Baptist Wainscott Jr. Jan 1987

Directing Angel Street, John Baptist Wainscott Jr.

Theses

This culminating project by John Baptist Wainscott Jr. documents the directorial process and academic reflection involved in staging Angel Street (originally Gaslight) by Patrick Hamilton as part of an MFA in Theatre at Lindenwood Colleges. Despite a personal aversion to melodrama, Wainscott undertook the production due to institutional constraints and transformed the project into a meaningful exploration of artistic growth. The report is structured around key thematic inquiries: why this play was selected, who created it, what defines its genre, how the production was executed, and how its success was evaluated.

The work delves into the history and critical …

The Architectural Theme In Painting, Allene Jones Ricker Jan 1987

The Architectural Theme In Painting, Allene Jones Ricker

Theses

The architectural theme has been used in painting in varying ways as decoration, in landscape, as composition and as abstraction. From the first century until the Renaissance, architecture was used by artists as decoration or as a backdrop, setting the stage and framing the figures. Architecture as subject matter continued to evolve in a manner nearly parallel to the development of the landscape. Architecture in the form of Roman ruins, for example, was used in picturesque landscapes.

Architecture in landscapes developed into townscapes. In both Holland and Italy the townscape was painted extensively. The Venetian view painters were interested in …

William Gillette And American Theatrical Realism Of The Late Nineteenth Century, Mark Burnett

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis, entitled William Gillette and American Theatrical Realism of the Late Nineteenth Century studies the realistic staging techniques employed by William Gillette during the latter part of the nineteenth century in order to bring recognition and establish William Gillette as an innovator in the realistic staging of drama during the time in American theatre known as the movement toward realism.

Division Of Labor Between The Sexes: An Historical Review Of Anthropological Literature And Presentation Of An Hypothesis For Analysis, Barry Kevin Douglas Jan 1987

Division Of Labor Between The Sexes: An Historical Review Of Anthropological Literature And Presentation Of An Hypothesis For Analysis, Barry Kevin Douglas

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The sexual division of labor, or activity differentiation between males and females, is one of the most distinctive features of culture. The importance of the sexual division of labor to anthropology is basic to the discipline and of widespread impact; for this reason anthropological interest in it stems from many perspectives. Rooted in human evolution, the division is considered a key to the success of the human species (Lancaster 1978). Regarded as the original and most basic form of economic specialization and exchange (Murdock and Provost 1973) the sexual division of labor is grounded in the mutual dependence of males …

The Color Response Inventory: An Attempt To Join The Educational And Mental Health Systems, Kathy Jaime Jan 1987

The Color Response Inventory: An Attempt To Join The Educational And Mental Health Systems, Kathy Jaime

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study began as an inquiry into the nature of the relationship between color experience and emotion; in the course of clinical experience and the study’s development it has been expanded to include psychosocial elements. The writer has struggled to integrate the disparate literature in the field and the study itself began to fade in importance. Suffice to say, what has materialized is an examination of the merits of one tool as an indicator of the "need for service" in referring school children for mental health evaluation. Each year numbers of children and their families are discovered to need mental …

Environmental Sociology: Paradigmatic Subservience And Its Future, Alan D. Lamb Jan 1987

Environmental Sociology: Paradigmatic Subservience And Its Future, Alan D. Lamb

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In the last two decades we have seen a radical change in people’s attitudes, beliefs, values, national policy, and knowledge regarding the natural environment—something that most people had previously taken for granted. The first Earth Day (April 22, 1970), is generally taken to represent the beginnings of a concerted environmental movement and the corresponding upswing of public attitude and concern for the natural environment. This rise in interest follows the civil rights movement of the early 1960s and the anti-war movement of the mid to late 1960s and early 1970s. Some writers claim that the environmental movement is a derivative …

The Montana Study, a research project in the humanities, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the University of Montana System, operated from 1944 to 1947. The Study primarily sought to help Montanans find ways to stabilize and enhance the quality of life in their small towns. Through a study-group process, twelve Montana towns researched and analyzed the towns' histories and economic and recreational problems. The philosophy of Baker Brownell, director of The Study, was instrumental in shaping and conducting The Study. This paper delineates The Study's methods and goals, assesses its immediate impact, and examines both the sources of Brownell's …

“What Thyng It Is That Wommen Moost Desiren”: Image And Self-Realization In The Wife Of Bath's Prologue And Tale, Thomas W. Köhn Jan 1987

“What Thyng It Is That Wommen Moost Desiren”: Image And Self-Realization In The Wife Of Bath's Prologue And Tale, Thomas W. Köhn

Masters Theses

The Wife of Bath is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating of the Canterbury pilgrims. At the same time she is one of those literary figures whose complex character constantly seems to elude the reader's judgement. Alisoun presents herself as a feminist advocating male subjection and female sovereignty in marriage, but her self-assertive behaviour cannot conceal an equally powerful longing for love and acceptance. Some critics therefore praise the psychological depth of the Wife's portrayal while others label her a stock character and join in the derisive laughter they believe her fellow pilgrims to bestow on her.

This thesis explores …

The Technical Achievement Of C. Rossetti In Goblin Market And Other Poems, Jay D. Fisk Jan 1987

The Technical Achievement Of C. Rossetti In Goblin Market And Other Poems, Jay D. Fisk

Masters Theses

During Christina Rossetti's lifetime (1830-1894), and for some fifty years after her death, critical attention focused on her life, more specifically on how that life affected her poetry. Critics tried to show how her Italian ancestors, artistic brothers, spiritual mother and sister, and her many illnesses influenced her works. Other than these basic facts, little else was known.

Later, psychological critics found much sexual symbolism in the "repressed" poet's works. "Goblin Market," with its tale of strange little goblin men seducing innocent maids with their fruits seemed particularly well-suited to a Freudian approach. This poem received so much attention that …

United States Participation In The North Russian Intervention, 1918-1919, Michael Andrew Hudson Jan 1987

United States Participation In The North Russian Intervention, 1918-1919, Michael Andrew Hudson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The interventions by the Western powers and Japan in revolutionary Russia during the years immediately following the Bolshevik Revolution of November 1917 constitute a sorry chapter in the history of relations between the Soviet Union and its capitalist adversaries. The United States took an active, if reluctant, role in two of these misadventures. In July 1918, President Woodrow Wilson authorized the diversion of United States military forces to Vladivostok for participation in the Siberian Intervention, and to Murmansk and Archangel for participation in the Northern Intervention. The events of the intervention in the l atter zone, Murmansk and especially Archangel, …
