Dimensional Dialogues, Farida Abousteit Jun 2024

Dimensional Dialogues, Farida Abousteit

Masters Theses

What does it mean to be, hear, interpret and understand language? And does it truly matter if we don't? This work explores linguistic translation and mistranslation, through the exploration of three-dimensional and interactive spaces that to create an opportunity to interact with language as an visual and felt environment; rather than language on a page or the spoken word.

When we stand next to typography, next to language, scaled up to a human-sized presence, do we find an immediate kinship and warmth towards it? Do we find ourselves more captivated and intrigued?

I believe that when we encounter the unfamiliar …

Tennessee Sure Knows How To Make 'Em, Lorena Park Jun 2024

Tennessee Sure Knows How To Make 'Em, Lorena Park

Masters Theses

I would say that I have a preoccupation, as well as a complicated relationship, with “the truth”. I was fortunate enough to be raised (and I use the term raised quite loosely, for I was downright ferrell) by pathological liars. This did an excellent job of preparing me for the world, I understand the deep horror and utter hilarity in life’s condition. I felt as though I was set upon a different path than most of the people I’ve come across. There was no intense disappointment when I was introduced to the ideas of the constructs of time and reality, …

While We Were At Dinner, Anna Glass Jun 2024

While We Were At Dinner, Anna Glass

Masters Theses

Mealtime is globally recognized as a time to gather, as food catalyzes connection. This project delves into this human practice of commensality and both explores and emphasizes the significance of communal eating and its benefits through designed objects. Through a collection of six designed dining experiments, this study examines the role of novel tabletop objects and unusually curated meal environments. The way these experiments are designed highlights how communal mealtime experiences can be used as tools for social engagement and disruptors of cultural norms.

Furniture and tableware designs have the power to challenge the assumed arrangement of traditional mealtime rituals, …

“The Hero Of My Own Life”: The Purpose Of The Fictional Self In The Life Writings Of Mary Wollstonecraft And Charles Dickens, Jessica M. Day

Honors Projects

This paper looks at Letters written in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark by Mary Wollstonecraft and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens as significant texts that combine fiction and life writing. Looking at fictional and autobiographical elements within each text, this paper argues that these authors manipulate genre to make significant claims about feminism and child activism. They participate in self-crafting—taking the self, something that is personal, and making it public and political. This paper argues that fiction allows the life writer to expand past the limitations of a single lifetime and speak to truths larger than the self. Letters written …

Human Or Machine: The Effects Of Centering Productivity On User Psyche Through Digital Management/Tracking Tools, Pema Thangzur May 2024

Human Or Machine: The Effects Of Centering Productivity On User Psyche Through Digital Management/Tracking Tools, Pema Thangzur

University Honors Theses

This paper examines the growing toxic culture of centering productivity and efficiency in the growth of Big Data-incentivized digital management/tracking tools. In response to the development of personal notetaking tools, mood tracker apps, habit tracking, and other personal data tracking programs, discourse from data scientists, interactive designers, archivists, and technology academics have critiqued how well-meaning the larger tech industry is by providing these tools. However, the current discourse on developing potential solutions to this issue remains understudied as the growth of said tools are fairly new. This paper proposes that digital interfaces employ approaches with users' personal data that center …

Community Policing And Meta-Stereotypes: Improving Citizenry-Police Relations In A Large, Multicultural Urban Area, Through A Participatory Action Research Community Safety Workshop, Cornelius Darnell Davis May 2024

Community Policing And Meta-Stereotypes: Improving Citizenry-Police Relations In A Large, Multicultural Urban Area, Through A Participatory Action Research Community Safety Workshop, Cornelius Darnell Davis

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The Term Policing and its surrounding themes are complex and deserve adequate attention. Since the early 1900’s, citizenry and police have had mistrustful relationships. Over the span of three eras, both positive and negative citizenry-police relations have been highlighted. In more recent years, the timely capturing of videos of over-policing and excessive use of deadly force incidents (mainly in BIPOC communities) have exacerbated negative citizenry-police relations, resulting in the lack of procedural justice and police legitimacy. Excessive policing and the seemingly constant deaths of unarmed African Americans undoubtedly contribute to the lack of confidence in police to effectively ensure all …

Digital Technology Usage Behaviour Among Unorganised Retailers In Tamil Nadu, Karthik Ram M May 2024

Digital Technology Usage Behaviour Among Unorganised Retailers In Tamil Nadu, Karthik Ram M

Theses and Dissertations

Unorganised retail, consisting of small local shops offering various products, holds a significant market share of 81.50 %, according to the India Retailer Report (2023). Despite the burgeoning e-commerce and organised retail sectors, unorganised retail remains a preferred shopping choice for many consumers.

In response to the sector's potential, several startups have emerged, aiming to support kirana stores. While these startups have primarily focused on horizontal solutions to enhance efficiency, there is a growing need for tailored solutions addressing the specific requirements of unorganised retailers.

Introducing the Dukantech (Dukan in hindi meaning ‘Shop’) model as a solution, this approach enables …

An Anglican-Episcopal Theology Of Desire & Prayer Book Liturgical Asceticism, Kyler F. Granados May 2024

An Anglican-Episcopal Theology Of Desire & Prayer Book Liturgical Asceticism, Kyler F. Granados

Honors Projects

This project, in response to the theological retrieval of desire conducted by Anglican theologian Sarah Coakley in her God, Sexuality, and the Self, descriptively analyses the place of “desire” in the language of the Daily Office and Eucharistic liturgies of the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer--the regula of Anglican Christians. It asks, “How do the liturgies of the Prayer Book address, direct, and ultimately entrust our desires to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit?” In the face of the descriptive, it also presents a constructive model for discipleship in “Prayer Book Liturgical Asceticism” a life of "common …

Comparing Editorial And Artificially Generated Fingerings: A Case Study, Lixi Qin May 2024

Comparing Editorial And Artificially Generated Fingerings: A Case Study, Lixi Qin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fingering is crucial for piano performance. Unlike other instruments with relatively fixed fingerings, keyboard instruments offer countless fingering combinations. As musical styles have evolved, so too have the instruments themselves, resulting in a rich history of diverse fingering systems, which sometimes conflict with one another. Moreover, due to individual differences in hand shape and size, the fingering advice from editors or teachers may not be universally applicable, and there is a lack of an objective, unified standard for validating these recommendations.

For students who do not fully understand fingering principles and have not been exposed to a wide range of …

An Archer's Deceit, Alexandria Marie Brazle

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Inspired by the grand legends of King Arthur and Robin Hood, my novel, “An Archer’s Deceit,” blends these well-beloved stories with fantasy elements and the innovation of the 19th century Industrial Revolution. Set in a Victorian Camelot, sixteen-year-old Sybilla must survive living a dual life as one of Prince Arthur’s ruthless knights while playing a role in usurping the monarchy for the freedom of outlawed magic users, like herself. Forced to deal with her morals and her personal story while instigating a government coup, Sybilla must eventually choose a side, or it’ll end up killing her and those she’s grown …

The results of the study suggest that music therapists' experiences of stigma for their mental illness (MI) had a negative …

Mexican-American Literature Is American Literature, Davia Ellen Guzman May 2024

Mexican-American Literature Is American Literature, Davia Ellen Guzman

Senior Theses

The main focus of this article is to show that teaching Mexican-American literature is an important part of teaching American literature, one that is often neglected. As of right now, Chicano Literature and American Literature are seen as two separate categories even though they are one in the same. Authors such as Rudolfo Anaya and Tomás Rivera allow readers insight into Mexican-American culture; the foundations they have set should be used in American Literature courses to help students view the wide variety that is American Literature, other than what the canon deems acceptable. Bless Me, Ultima, and …and the Earth …

The Complexity Of The Veil, Muskan Khan May 2024

The Complexity Of The Veil, Muskan Khan

Senior Theses

Women fight injustices and underrepresentation all over the world, however, the women’s right movement does not look the same all over the world. Every country and every woman is fighting for different rights that they need, but not all women share the same experiences when it comes to the women’s rights movement. There are many intersections that determine the experiences of every individual woman. One of the intersections this paper will examine is the lived experience of women and Islam and the intersections between identity and gender in the Arab world. It’s important to note that in this paper, although …

A Glimpse Into The Constructed Wilderness: The Evolving Stories From Bryson, Strayed, And Krakauer, Halston Leigh Belcastro May 2024

A Glimpse Into The Constructed Wilderness: The Evolving Stories From Bryson, Strayed, And Krakauer, Halston Leigh Belcastro

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This thesis examines how humans have constructed the idea of wilderness through literature in the United States. I argue that the concept of wilderness evolves over time and continues changing due to technological advances, climate change, reflections of the past, and the romanticization of ordinary people who venture out into the wilderness for an extended period. The definitions of the wilderness are elusive and individual. The wilderness can be viewed as a place for solitude, or as a space to reflect on the past and reconcile with the present. However, there is a collective view of wilderness that emerges from …

Queering Futures With Data-Driven Speculation: The Design Of An Expanded Mixed Methods Research Framework Integrating Quantitative, Qualitative, And Practice-Based Modes, Jess Parris Westbrook

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Queering’ questions, unlearns, disrupts, and transforms approaches, expectations, and realities. Futures are time and change. The approach I have designed to operationalize Queering and futures, or Queering futures, is the Queering Futures Framework (QFF). The Queering Futures Framework (QFF) is a brand-new transdisciplinary research framework intersecting values, positionality, complexity, Queerness themes, and futures praxis. This framework expands traditional mixed methods research conventions by integrating quantitative, qualitative, and practice-based research modes and mindsets. The Queering Futures Framework (QFF) prototype presented in this dissertation functions as a test case and proof of concept. The prototype quantitative mode measures attitudes towards AI, and …

Medieval German Christian Women’S Religious Experience, Elliot Knell May 2024

Medieval German Christian Women’S Religious Experience, Elliot Knell

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In the medieval period, both professed women and laywomen were deeply involved in manuscript production, and the use of books was often a vital part of their religious practices. In order to fully understand the value that manuscripts held for medieval women it is important to understand the medical and philosophical understandings of sex that permeated medieval society in order to better understand gendered experiences within Christian spaces. Additionally, examining how vision was understood as both a physical and spiritual process allows for a deeper understanding of how visual art is used in religious contexts. In the medieval period, understandings …

Examples of rags that maintain these characteristics are The Entertainer by Joplin, Heliotrope Bouquet by Louis Chauvin and Joplin, and Top Liner Rag by Lamb. Analysis of Bolcom’s Three Classical Rags ensues, exploring the ways they both honor and subvert the expectations …

Zombies From Cultural Origin To Contemporary Uses, Conor Davenport May 2024

Zombies From Cultural Origin To Contemporary Uses, Conor Davenport

University Honors Theses

This piece explores the evolution of the Western cinematic zombie, from its spawning to its reappropriation and echoes that are seen throughout the current landscapes of cinema today. It presents the axiom of the genre with White Zombie (1932) and how it has evolved into the contemporary creature we know and love today. The paper examines a throughline from cultural origin and how this has developed and becomes a critical lens for widely spread bureaucratic systems currently in place.

Queer and trans youth of color are often the target of surveillance, bullying, discrimination, and abuse. However, in an attempt to navigate such violent and discriminatory circumstances, the queer and trans youth of color in this dissertation found refuge in furry art and performances, both online and offline, where they were able to express themselves freely and thus acquire a sense of belonging among others with similar experiences. In this dissertation, "a furry" is used to refer to an individual who self-identifies as one who has an affinity for anthropomorphic animal characters. A common practice among furries is creating a …

'To Surpass Convention' (2024): An Analysis Of Conventional Fantasy And How My Story Can Go Beyond, Aj Odom

University Honors Theses

Something that I struggle with when engaged in creative writing, just as every other writer has struggled with the same issue, is how my stories differ from those written before. It's difficult to create something that is entirely new, because, as artists, we always fall back on what we know has worked in the past. This uncertainty of unique creativity is what my thesis stems from. I am in the process of writing a fantasy script, but I struggle with originality. I can't help but compare my fantasy story to the fantasy stories of the past. I want to be …

Our Body-Minds Are Not Apologies: How Systemic Oppression, Beauty Standards & Desirability Politics Impact The Body-Image & Sex Lives Of Trans & Non-Binary People With Physical (Dis)Abilities, Elm Mack May 2024

Our Body-Minds Are Not Apologies: How Systemic Oppression, Beauty Standards & Desirability Politics Impact The Body-Image & Sex Lives Of Trans & Non-Binary People With Physical (Dis)Abilities, Elm Mack

University Honors Theses

Due to the ableism, whiteness, and cisgender-heteropatriarchy in the US, people who are marked by racial, physical, neuro, and gendered differences are stereotypically considered to be less desirable. By applying a perspective informed by Disability Studies, Trans Studies, and Queer of Color Theory (including scholars like Eli Clare, Robert McRuer, Sonya Renee Taylor, Audre Lorde, Sami Schalk, Chris Finley, and Alicia Cox), I investigate how societal norms, beauty standards, and systemic oppression have disproportionately impacted the body-images and sex lives of trans and non-binary people with physical (dis)abilities. This thesis aims to shed light on the variety of ways in …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research indicates that racism remains a persistent social issue within American society and continues to permeate many institutions, including the military. While the issue of racism in the United States has garnered awareness, the pervasive and persistent psychological effects of racism on Black and African American service members have not been adequately researched. A qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was conducted to collect data from 16 participants through in-depth semi-structured interviews to examine this topic. Critical race theory and race-based traumatic stress theory were the theoretical frameworks for this study. Findings indicated that racial encounters and discrimination continue to be persistent …
