Work-Life Balance Fantasy Logics Of Mothers Working In Community Colleges: A Glitch Methodology Using Intimate Inquiry And Aesthetic Mediation, Emily Hanson Moore Jul 2024

Work-Life Balance Fantasy Logics Of Mothers Working In Community Colleges: A Glitch Methodology Using Intimate Inquiry And Aesthetic Mediation, Emily Hanson Moore

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

This post-qualitative study explores work-life balance as a sustaining fantasy produced by neoliberal, patriarchal, productivity-driven systems and how this fantasy manifests affectively for mothers who work in community colleges. The study began by contextualizing the work-life balance fantasy within higher education as a gendered workscape. Using intimate inquiry (Laura, 2013) and aesthetic meditation as the primary approaches, the researcher engaged in conversations with participants about their experiences mothering and working in community colleges. The primary data sources were these conversations, participant artifacts, researcher self-reflection and artifacts, and a range of contemporary cultural texts including podcasts, poetry, television, social media posts …

Reimagining Web Design: Empowering Agency Of Specialized Audiences Through User-Centered Heuristics, Haley Jones Jun 2024

Reimagining Web Design: Empowering Agency Of Specialized Audiences Through User-Centered Heuristics, Haley Jones

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to create an alternative model for website design that interrogates standardized, linear ways of knowing and being by placing the audience at the center of the web design process. This research contributed a reimagined approach to traditional and standardized web design heuristics by considering an audience-centric methodology that was practical and applicable for web design praxis to create equitable user experiences which can empower audiences to recall their own knowledge and experience to make meaning for themselves through a reimagining of knowledge-making processes in a network of digitized information. In perceiving the rhetorical choice in design of …

Mother Machines: Deified Domesticity And American Misogyny In Ira Levin’S The Stepford Wives, Emmaline R. Williams Jun 2024

Mother Machines: Deified Domesticity And American Misogyny In Ira Levin’S The Stepford Wives, Emmaline R. Williams

Student Theses and Dissertations

Despite an increased awareness of human rights issues and more interest in intersectional feminist practices in post-postmodern culture, the imprint of the repressed housewife lingers. My research for this work is driven by two central questions: What themes connect the emergence of this image in nineteenth century literature and art to the current social conception of women? What role do men play in maintaining these conceptions and how do they benefit? As such, this thesis examines the last 150 years of women’s social progress and regress. In this analysis centered on Ira Levin’s novel The Stepford Wives, I seek to …

Postcolonial Theory And The Intersection Of Ghanaian Cinema And Politics, Anwar Jamison Jun 2024

Postcolonial Theory And The Intersection Of Ghanaian Cinema And Politics, Anwar Jamison

Student Theses and Dissertations

The foundation of postcolonial theory rests on the assertion that the specter of colonialism permeates every aspect of society in erstwhile colonial nations. Ghana, originally called the Gold Coast, was a colony of Great Britain until 1957. That the British founded the film industry in Ghana as a tool to indoctrinate their colonial subjects provides a singular opportunity for scholarly exploration. Evaluating Ghanaian cinema from its colonial origins to its post-independence evolution, while incorporating an examination of the myriad political developments that paralleled its progression, helps to elucidate the effects of colonialism on the country’s film aesthetic. After independence, Kwame …

Rural Black Women’S Self-Help Activism In The Arkansas Delta, Local Heritage, And Global Resonance: Mrs. Gertha Bailey Trice And The Lee County Self-Help Project, Swity Sultana Monni Jun 2024

Rural Black Women’S Self-Help Activism In The Arkansas Delta, Local Heritage, And Global Resonance: Mrs. Gertha Bailey Trice And The Lee County Self-Help Project, Swity Sultana Monni

Student Theses and Dissertations

In the mid-to-late twentieth century, through outstanding and transformative leadership, rural Black women activists in the Arkansas Delta worked to confront significant problems facing their communities, in the contexts of health, education, and social justice; their efforts were often apolitical in nature, at least overtly. These women went beyond the demands of many mid-twentieth-century civil rights activists to create spaces to articulate and demand human rights, broadly conceived. This in-depth study explores the community activism of Gertha Bailey Trice of Lee County, Arkansas, who engaged in broadly defined African American self-help traditions through her work with the Lee County Self …

Soaked In Alcohol: Beyond The Female Archetype As Reflected In Djuna Barnes, Dorothy Parker, And Zelda Fitzgerald, Chondell C. Villines Jun 2024

Soaked In Alcohol: Beyond The Female Archetype As Reflected In Djuna Barnes, Dorothy Parker, And Zelda Fitzgerald, Chondell C. Villines

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study surveys the use and abuse of alcohol within the literature of Modernist female authors of the Jazz Age, 1920 – 1930. An examination of the works of Djuna Barnes, Dorothy Parker, and Zelda Fitzgerald is conducted to understand their treatment of alcohol consumption by women and how this treatment is more complex than their male counterparts. This dissertation focuses on each author’s use of alcohol in developing their fictional female characters and how, when, and why they drink. These questions directly relate to the use and abuse of alcohol to assuage trauma, or as a reaction to trauma. …

Self And Tell: Exploring Identity Through Music, Logen Crandall Jun 2024

Self And Tell: Exploring Identity Through Music, Logen Crandall

Honors Theses

My honors thesis is a five-song EP titled ‘self and tell’. It is considered an EP (Extended Play) because it is longer than one song but shorter than an album. As an English: Creative Writing major, I wanted to write something for my thesis that truly excited me. However, I was ignited by the thought of writing an essay, play, collection of poems, or work of fiction. As someone who has always had a passion for music and singing, I instead chose to use my knowledge of poetry and storytelling to write lyrics that followed a central theme from one …

The Hidden Forms Of Violence In The Lives Of Professional Women In Tagamoa, New Cairo, Nouran Elhariry Jun 2024

The Hidden Forms Of Violence In The Lives Of Professional Women In Tagamoa, New Cairo, Nouran Elhariry

Theses and Dissertations

The desire to craft new lifestyles is the main drive for the relocation to New Cairo among Egypt’s upper middle classes. This research is focusing on the upper middle class--people who still rely on their incomes from working to maintain their status—as opposed to the elite upper class, who rely on incomes from property, investments, inheritance, and other forms of intergenerational wealth. These communities were enmeshed in high degrees of domestic violence. The power-relations reconfigured in the domestic sphere, with increasing numbers of upper middle class women embarking on professional careers while navigating households and family relations, have opened the …

Családi, Joelle Nagy Jun 2024

Családi, Joelle Nagy

LSU Master's Theses

Családi (Magyar/Hungarian) adjective: related to the family; related to the home

CSALÁDI is a compendium of paintings and sculpture that narrate and itemize memories, mementos, and feelings from my childhood in relation to the home. It is an autobiographical agglomeration of objects and spaces that I am honoring and remembering through the act of creating. I am effectuating the feminine and maternal instinct of gathering and arranging my memories pertaining to personal history and inherited cultural identity through altar-making. Idiosyncratic items are collected and bound through color association and sensory memory. Constructing interior and exterior spaces of the home in …

Women Gaze Back: Affect And Apparatic Disintegration In Funeral Parade Of Roses And Perfect Blue, Jessi Ivie Jun 2024

Women Gaze Back: Affect And Apparatic Disintegration In Funeral Parade Of Roses And Perfect Blue, Jessi Ivie

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how films Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) by Toshio Matsumoto and Perfect Blue (1997) by Satoshi Kon subvert the male gaze of the camera by having the female main characters look back at the audience. The characters Mima (Perfect Blue) and Eddie (Funeral Parade) take control of the camera to subvert the hierarchical relationship between apparatus, audience, and characters. Through the lenses of apparatus and affect theory, these films show how the world of film includes the audience instead of precluding them. Experimental editing and heightened emotional situations unsettle the audience's voyeuristic position, bringing them closer to …

Jinetes De La Tormenta: The Invasive Influence Of Gender Constructs On The Journey Towards Selfhood And Societal Progress, Marissa Nicole Luquette Jun 2024

Jinetes De La Tormenta: The Invasive Influence Of Gender Constructs On The Journey Towards Selfhood And Societal Progress, Marissa Nicole Luquette

Theses and Dissertations

The novel Jinetes de la tormenta, written by Spanish author, Javier Castañeda de la Torre, presents gender as an obstacle to individuals in the ongoing process of self-discovery (as it relates to personal identity) and as the underlying source of human discontent in the technological age. Jinetes represents gender as a hindrance to the developing self through masculine and feminine binaries in European colonial languages and through the performative behavioral expectations tethered to the gendered body the theoretical works of Jacques Lacan and Hélène Cixous. The theoretical works of Jacques Lacan and Hélène Cixous establish the argument surrounding linguistic gender …

Recognizing The Role Of Rhetoric In Secondary Writing Groups, Catherine Schrecengost Jun 2024

Recognizing The Role Of Rhetoric In Secondary Writing Groups, Catherine Schrecengost

Theses and Dissertations

This project seeks to mediate one of the most significant issues with implementing writing groups in the secondary classroom: students do not know how to meaningfully engage in discussions about their writing. Students lack the necessary skills as well as understanding of the rhetorical nature of language to effectively request and provide feedback on pieces of writing. The application of theories of dialogue and collaboration to the research about writing groups suggest that the quality of student writing depends on the quality of their discussions about writing. Thus, my action research study investigates the types of language used between students …

Diagnosing Silent Forgiveness At The Dialogical Limit In Endō Shūsaku’S Novel Silence, Catherine Buescher Jun 2024

Diagnosing Silent Forgiveness At The Dialogical Limit In Endō Shūsaku’S Novel Silence, Catherine Buescher

Dissertations

I situate this dissertation within the context of the rightly noted deficiencies of dialogue and dialogical hermeneutics, deficiencies that prevent dialogue from effectively addressing the pathological nature of many of today's social issues, e.g., white supremacy, sexual and gender inequality, and climate change. Using the lens and limits of Western dialogical hermeneutics as noted by David Tracy, I conduct a case study of the dialogues of the main characters - Rodrigues, Ferreira, Kichijiro, God—in Endō Shūsaku’s novel Silence, noting the silence active in each of the dialogues at the end of the novel. I then argue that the nature and …

A Comparison Of Video Feedback And Video Self-Evaluation To Improve Tap Skills, Ellie Warmund Jun 2024

A Comparison Of Video Feedback And Video Self-Evaluation To Improve Tap Skills, Ellie Warmund

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the research on behavioral interventions in sports, researchers have evaluated various feedback-based interventions to enhance performance of skills. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of video feedback (VF) to improve performance across a variety of sports. Video self-evaluation (VSE), though less studied, is another feedback-based intervention that has been proven to improve sports skills. By using a multiple baseline across participants with an embedded alternating treatments design, this study compared VF to VSE to improve the performance of tap skills. We evaluated three skills for each dancer; one skill received VF, one received VSE, and one did not receive an …

Daring Dames And Dirty Deeds: Chicago Burlesque, Drag, And Censorship Politics, 1850-1980, Lucas Andrew Bensley Jun 2024

Daring Dames And Dirty Deeds: Chicago Burlesque, Drag, And Censorship Politics, 1850-1980, Lucas Andrew Bensley

Dissertations

"Daring Dames and Dirty Deeds" is a history of burlesque, drag and censorship politics in Chicago from 1850 to 1980. In this period, burlesque and drag entertainers and shows adapted to changes in the tastes and sensibilities of the public. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, burlesque was primarily a form of parody of "higher culture" entertainment featuring circus performers, comedians, and female dancers in elaborate costume. In Chicago, burlesque gradually changed to become an art form that pushed the boundaries of how women could perform on stage while challenging laws and cultural norms of decency and chastity. …

The New China Model: Combating Economic And Political Order, Jack R. Swords

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Contemporary world politics centers around the actions of the two largest powers on Earth, the United States and China. They are both each other’s greatest adversary yet at the same time are each other’s largest trading partners. This thesis explores the nature of China’s economic climate that has seen it grow to one of the world’s foremost powers. However, the East Asian Nation faces economic challenges centered around the three D’s: Debt, Deflation, and Demographics. Loverboy Rules: A Transtheoretical Exploration Of Andy Bernard's Failed Masculinity, Jessie Marta Olstad Jun 2024

Loverboy Rules: A Transtheoretical Exploration Of Andy Bernard's Failed Masculinity, Jessie Marta Olstad

Master's Theses

NBC's U.S adaptation of The Office is one of the most well-known sitcoms to come out of modern television, surpassing its original British counterpart’s two seasons with its own nine. It is a representation, as well, of the time it aired (2005-2013), reflecting on the modern American workplace and the everyday person. Within it, The Office also reflected how society was constructed at the time with its humor surrounding gender, homosexuality, and race – as a tolerant but not welcoming atmosphere to people who were not white, heterosexual, men. More specifically, The Office presents multiple adaptations of masculinity to teach …

“Even The Birds Got More Out Of Her Than I Did”: Wrecking And Constructive Memory In Key West, Florida, Sarah L. Whiting Jun 2024

“Even The Birds Got More Out Of Her Than I Did”: Wrecking And Constructive Memory In Key West, Florida, Sarah L. Whiting

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the creative nature of memory at work in coastal city of Key West, Florida. Using the commemoration of the wreckers as a medium, I argue that the memory of wreckers is based on fictional maritime literature from the nineteenth century. The basis of the collective memory of wreckers in Key West from maritime fiction affects the way that the residents define themselves. Through embracing the fictional wrecker past that the monument to the wreckers represents, the residents of Key West embody their Conch identity. Thus, collective memory in this city works as a creative vehicle and shows …

Jewish Laws For Gentiles: Purity In The Pseudo-Clementine Homilies, Joshua T. King Jun 2024

Jewish Laws For Gentiles: Purity In The Pseudo-Clementine Homilies, Joshua T. King

Dissertations

This dissertation is an analysis of the concept of purity in the Pseudo-Clementine Homilies. The argument proceeds in two parts. In the first, I argue that the Homilies’ presentation of purity reflects an ancient Jewish background. Thus, the Homilies, like other ancient Jews, divides its concept of purity in two domains: a domain related to the body (bodily purity) and a domain related to ethics (purity of the heart). I then track the differences between these two kinds of purity, noting particularly how they are defiled and how such defilements are removed. Thus, while bodily defilement comes from occasional bodily …

Liberating Bioethics Through Agape: A Feminist Perspective From The Periphery, Kimberly Vargas Barreto Jun 2024

Liberating Bioethics Through Agape: A Feminist Perspective From The Periphery, Kimberly Vargas Barreto

Dissertations

Despite the vast number of cultures and peoples that reside in the West, ethical action in bioethics is determined through the perspective of la Totalidad, which does not include the Other or individuals from the periphery. In my dissertation, I argue that the universalization of U.S. clinical bioethics (la bioética estadounidense) and the coloniality of knowledge that extends from it are, at its core, imperialistic in nature and result in the exclusion of patients with intersectional identities. While clinical bioethics was first conceived as a critical tool for medicine, the acceptance of principlism as the central theory in the field …

Reconceiving Virtue: A Mengzian Adaptation Of Eudaimonic Virtue Ethics In Response To Contemporary Criticisms, Gina Elizabeth Lebkuecher Jun 2024

Reconceiving Virtue: A Mengzian Adaptation Of Eudaimonic Virtue Ethics In Response To Contemporary Criticisms, Gina Elizabeth Lebkuecher

Dissertations

The primary question my dissertation aims to answer is: how might eudaimonic virtue ethics be reimagined to respond to contemporary criticisms from disability scholars, feminists, and empirical psychology? To answer this, I introduce the Eudaimonic View of Virtue, or EV, and propose a Mengzian adaptation of the EV (EV-M) in response to these criticisms. The EV captures the four core claims to which eudaimonic virtue ethical theories are committed: (i) virtues, in the sense of excellent character traits or dispositions, are the foundation of ethics or ethical action (i.e., aretaicism); (ii) virtue is at least partially constitutive of human well-being/flourishing …

Looking For Love: Motivations Of Dating App Usage In Millennials, Mel Ekins Jun 2024

Looking For Love: Motivations Of Dating App Usage In Millennials, Mel Ekins

Master's Theses

Dating applications (apps) have become a popular method for young adults to make romantic connections. The apps themselves are easy to use and sometimes are created to be “game-like” to entice people to want to utilize them. People can “match” with other users and strike up conversations. Extensive research has been conducted on motivations for dating and using the dating app Tinder. This study looks at users’ reasons for using Bumble, where little research has been done. This study focuses on millennials aged 26-42, whereas most other studies have focused on college students under 23. This study uses a mixed …

The Sound Of Silence: Listening For God In Cormac Mccarthy's The Road, Brittany Higgins Maloy Jun 2024

The Sound Of Silence: Listening For God In Cormac Mccarthy's The Road, Brittany Higgins Maloy

Theses and Dissertations

In the decimated and silent post-apocalyptic setting of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, the main characters spend a significant amount of time listening to silence, listening for signs of danger, but also listening for the voice of God. Many have discussed the hopeless nihilism juxtaposed with the heavy use of Christian iconography in the novel classifying it within one of these dichotomies or somewhere on the spectrum in between. This paper argues that the hopelessness and stark silence is required to reveal hope and the opportunity to hear God's voice. To demonstrate my argument, I define the characteristics of silence, stillness, …

Christotechtonics: Dildonic Prostheticity In Theological Formulation, Evan Taylor Marsolek Jun 2024

Christotechtonics: Dildonic Prostheticity In Theological Formulation, Evan Taylor Marsolek

Dissertations

This dissertation asserts the following claim: Christ is a dildo. This project brings Paul B. Preciado into conversations with contemporary philosophies of religion and interrogates a hegemonic Christian theological political matrix. This project articulates a hermeneutic of christotechtonics, which studies appearance, formation, and utilization of Christ. This project is twofold. It begins with a transdisciplinary exploration that entangles queer and trans theories, religious studies, secular studies, and philosophy of religion to position reading queer and trans theories as forms of counter political theologies. The work then transitions into dildonic prostheticity in theological formulation. The 2019 Vatican document “Male and Female …

“She’S On Her Way Up”: A Case Study Of Mercy Otis Warren And The Gendered Politics Of Commemoration, Sara Ann White Jun 2024

“She’S On Her Way Up”: A Case Study Of Mercy Otis Warren And The Gendered Politics Of Commemoration, Sara Ann White

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 2001, a statue of eighteenth-century Bill of Rights advocate Mercy Otis Warren was erected on the Barnstable County Superior Courthouse lawn in Barnstable, Massachusetts. The story of the statue’s eventual placement is a fascinating case study of how the gendered politics of commemoration can play out over time in local communities. The saga of Warren’s commemoration is inextricably bound up with the history of efforts to commemorate Warren’s brother, James Otis Jr., and eventual arguments that Warren’s work deserved recognition in its own right. We first see gendered politics at play as Warren’s real accomplishments were consistently overshadowed by …

The Voice As Identity: How Opera Has Influenced Dubbing In Italy And The United States, Brynn Allison Staker Jun 2024

The Voice As Identity: How Opera Has Influenced Dubbing In Italy And The United States, Brynn Allison Staker

Theses and Dissertations

An enduring Italian tradition of celebrating the voice and the Italian language as seen by the Italian perception and interest in opera has created an environment of celebration for Italian dubbers. The long-established history of opera in Italy, as well as the modern reception of Italian opera, have effectively placed the voice at the forefront of the Italian entertainment industry. This can be seen through an examination of the careers of Italian dubbers and the success that they saw in their industry. The United States did not have a longstanding operatic tradition, and when opera was introduced it was under …

Mill Point (8hi16-20) And Mosaic Park (8hi6747) In The Pre-Columbian And Historic Periods, Dennis Pierson Jun 2024

Mill Point (8hi16-20) And Mosaic Park (8hi6747) In The Pre-Columbian And Historic Periods, Dennis Pierson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the participation of the Mill Point archaeological complex (8HI16-20) and the adjacent Mosaic Park archaeological site (8HI6747) in the changing cultural, economic, and geopolitical relationships that took place among the Indigenous polities present in the Tampa Bay region of southwest Florida during the pre-Columbian and early Spanish colonial periods. Political economy theory provides a framework for understanding the interactions that occurred among them.

Historical accounts, ground reconnaissance, surface survey, repeat aerial photography, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to gain a better understanding of the archaeological significance of the sites. The …

Speech & Language Services: Examining The Experiences Of Deaf / Hard Of Hearing People, Milayna N. Barker Jun 2024

Speech & Language Services: Examining The Experiences Of Deaf / Hard Of Hearing People, Milayna N. Barker

University Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) adults and parents of Deaf/HoH children related to speech and language services, and their recommendations for service providers. Historically, professionals have focused on the development of speech and aural/oral skills of Deaf and HoH people. As such, when working with families of newly-identified children with hearing loss, hearing professionals may be ill-equipped to provide culturally-responsive, fully inclusive information and education regarding communication options and opportunities.

Method: This study used a qualitative research design to examine participant experiences related to speech and language services …

Stories Of Those Untold: Identifying Retention, And Graduation Obstacles And Solutions Of Black Women At Four-Year Predominately White Institutions, Courtney Alicia Griffin Jun 2024

Stories Of Those Untold: Identifying Retention, And Graduation Obstacles And Solutions Of Black Women At Four-Year Predominately White Institutions, Courtney Alicia Griffin

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Experiences of Black women in college are often lost in conversations about college students. Although underrepresented students are highly researched, the focus is usually on Black males and White females. This research identifies the obstacles encountered by Black women at predominately white institutions on their pursuit of a college degree, how they overcame those obstacles and how universities can assist future Black women in overcoming these obstacles. The researcher used counter-storytelling to “expose, analyze, and challenge the majoritarian stories of racial privilege, shatter complacency, challenge the dominant discourse on race, and further the struggle for racial reform”. This study concludes …

The Dialectics Of Faith: Kierkegaard, Irony, And Conversion, Douglas Zimmerman Jun 2024

The Dialectics Of Faith: Kierkegaard, Irony, And Conversion, Douglas Zimmerman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Kierkegaard, the 19th-century Danish philosopher, offers a profound perspective on conversion. According to him, conversion isn't a mere external change, but a deeply personal and internal transformation. It's about moving from a state of despair to faith. Kierkegaard believed that true conversion involves a passionate leap of faith, where an individual confronts their own subjectivity and makes a conscious, often paradoxical, choice to align themselves with their authentic values and spiritual beliefs. In his view, conversion is a constant process, requiring introspection, struggle, and a commitment to live authentically in the face of life's uncertainties. In order to communicate this …
