Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
Redefining The Art Songs Of Maude Valérie White, Sarah C. Rees
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Maude Valérie White (1866-1937) was an English composer during the Victorian Era. Her main output was in the genre of art song, of which she wrote more than two hundred during her life. Her music was very popular at the height of her career around 1880-1890, but fell out of favor with the general public in line with the general reaction against Victorian art and ideals. This written document focuses on the life of Maude Valérie White contextualized within the ideals of Victorian womanhood. It will explore the development of her musical style through eight song analyses: The Devout Lover, …

Dissertations
This study explored Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans (LGBT) employees’ perceptions and assessments of their firms’ organizational cultures and, in particular, the opportunities within the culture that can lead to upper management positions for those who identify as LGBT. The research sought to understand the extent to which inclusivity efforts are reflected in real career progression opportunities for openly LGBT employees working in San Diego County. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods research design, the study incorporated quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to achieve a comprehensive understanding of participant’s perspectives and experiences. The decision to use both methods allowed the research …

Healthcare-Seeking Behavior In A Toxic Landscape: Investigating Cancer Care Awareness In Louisiana's Cancer Alley, Moumita Roy
LSU Master's Theses
The fossil fuel and petrochemical sector in the Louisiana region, known as "Cancer Alley," has a devastating impact not only on the environment but also on the health and lives of the local population. Extreme pollution from the petrochemical industry not only elevated cancer rates in this region but also maternal, reproductive, and newborn health harms, respiratory diseases, and other complex health issues. This study examined the healthcare-seeking behavior of some residents and their awareness of cancer facilities within a 100-mile radius of their homes and identified key challenges, such as proximity of cancer care and accessibility, financial constraints, and …
Looping: The Music Of Steve Reich, Ty D. Ellender
Looping: The Music Of Steve Reich, Ty D. Ellender
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Steve Reich, a New York-based composer and percussionist, was best known for his innovative compositional techniques during the minimalist era. Early in his career, Reich began manipulating recorded tape by splicing it into small repetitive loops and playing the tapes simultaneously. Through this process, Reich discovered a musical phenomenon known as phasing, ultimately creating pieces such as It’s Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966). Phasing is a process in which two identical melodic and/or rhythmic patterns gradually change their relationship to one another throughout the course of a work. As the piece progresses, new melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic …
Preparation Of K–12 Preservice Music Teacher Educators Using Assessment Strategies, Frederica Doctor
Preparation Of K–12 Preservice Music Teacher Educators Using Assessment Strategies, Frederica Doctor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent studies suggest that preservice music teacher educators (MTEs) had more experience in assessment preparation at the graduate level than during their undergraduate experience. Although music standards and assessments emphasize providing information about student learning, research investigating what assessment strategies music faculty are using and teaching to prepare preservice MTEs is limited. The purpose of this basic qualitative research study was to address the gap in research regarding assessment strategies used and taught by music faculty across the United States to prepare K–12 preservice MTEs for classroom instruction. The study is grounded in the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation …
Examination Of Musical Sophistication And Working Memory Correlates In High School Students, Abby South
Examination Of Musical Sophistication And Working Memory Correlates In High School Students, Abby South
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between musical engagement and cognitive ability in high school students. While musicians’ brains have long been of interest to those who study experience-dependent neuroplasticity, a lack of adolescent data grossly limits our understanding of the relationship between music training and observed neuroplastic changes in the brain. Advances in psychometric testing and brain imaging reveal relationships among musical expertise, changes in brain function, structure, and connectivity, and enhanced cognitive ability, but categorical groupings of dichotomously defined musicians and non-musicians prevent nuanced understanding of these complex relationships. In this study, 83 …
The Lived Experience Of African American Female Veterans With Mental Health Service Utilization Following Active Duty Discharge, Martha Woodley
The Lived Experience Of African American Female Veterans With Mental Health Service Utilization Following Active Duty Discharge, Martha Woodley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although extensive research has explored mental health, transitional barriers, and trauma-related experiences of women veterans, little research has focused on the utilization of mental health services by African American female veterans following active duty discharge. Minority female veterans tend to face gender treatment differences and racial biases, encounter trauma-related stressors, and experience the societal absence of military cultural competency when transitioning from active duty. The overall purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of African American female veterans with mental health service utilization following active duty discharge. A phenomenological research design was used to explore the experiences …
Building Bridges: Fostering Team Leadership Between Elders And Pastors Of Ethiopian Evangelical Churches In North America, Abraham Abiyo Teanso
Building Bridges: Fostering Team Leadership Between Elders And Pastors Of Ethiopian Evangelical Churches In North America, Abraham Abiyo Teanso
Doctor of Ministry
In Ethiopia, church leaders usually have full authority, while pastors have no power in decision-making. But in the USA, things are different. Here, pastors often have a lot of authority due to modern leadership styles. When older leaders from Ethiopia come to the USA, they want to stick to the traditional way of leading they were used to. They think pastors should only teach, not lead. However, younger generations and those who like modern leadership want pastors to stay in charge. This difference in opinion has caused problems among leaders in Ethiopian churches in North America. This can make people …
Sabbath Rest, Gregory Mcmullen
Sabbath Rest, Gregory Mcmullen
Doctor of Leadership
Limited time and finances have significantly contributed to the spiritual decay and practice of the Sabbath in Snohomish County. Through this study, I have identified that community members, immigrants, and refugees are impacted the most by working overtime or two jobs to provide a home for their families. Many immigrants not only have to work very hart but but most frequent food banks and seek assistance from the local church. Unfortunately, things are better as a high percentage of firstborn Slavic and Hispanics students drop out of school to work or take care of their younger siblings. Native Americans followed …
Ecclesial Communion: Of Divine Economy Through Love And Participation, Kyle J. Groesch
Ecclesial Communion: Of Divine Economy Through Love And Participation, Kyle J. Groesch
Masters of Theological Studies
Following the councils of Nicaea and Constantinople, the early followers of Christian faith understood the proper name for their God to be entirely triune in essence: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While this trinitarian heritage has scarcely been passed down to modern believers of Christianity, the fundamental truth of God’s triune nature remains the same. Out of the divine economy, humanity was crafted in the image of God with koinonia at heart. As Father, Son, and Holy Spirit comprise the singular ousia and cannot exist apart from one another, so the Body with many members is only possible in the …

Alumni giving is a critical revenue stream for Christian liberal arts colleges that originated as Bible institutions. This dissertation includes an in-depth case study of the patterns and determinants of alumni donations, focusing on the transition from Bible colleges to liberal arts institutions and the subsequent impact on alumni giving behaviors. Quantitative data from a member institution of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities were analyzed to explore the influence of demographic variables of age, marital status, and era of institutional operation on alumni contributions. This research addressed six key questions, including comparisons of the participants' mean giving to …
Devices And Dining: A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Mobile Device Use In Italian And American Restaurants, O'Malley Jenkins
Devices And Dining: A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Mobile Device Use In Italian And American Restaurants, O'Malley Jenkins
Senior Theses
The field of technology ethics has seen increasing growth and interest over the years. Many have begun to consider the impacts of technology’s use and whether it is being employed in a healthy manner by users. However, there has been limited investigation into whether the ways in which technology use varies across cultures. This study begins to address this gap by researching Italian and American device usage in fast food settings. Non-participant naturalistic observations were used to record data for 89 Italian and 88 American customers of fast food restaurants. Analysis of the collected data indicates that Americans use their …
A Historical Analysis Of Infant Mortality In South Carolina From 1920-1970, Allison Ritchie
A Historical Analysis Of Infant Mortality In South Carolina From 1920-1970, Allison Ritchie
Senior Theses
This study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to investigate racial and spatial inequalities in South Carolina infant mortality rates (IMR’s) between 1920-1970. In the 20th century, IMR’s declined throughout the United States, primarily due to economic growth, increased sanitation, and improved medical knowledge. Factors such as systemic racism and lack of healthcare access resulted in higher IMR’s for Black infants and infants living in rural areas. In 1920, South Carolina’s Black IMR was 1.5 times higher than the white IMR; by 1970 the difference expanded to 1.9, reflecting a 27% rise. The disparity between Black and white IMR’s increased in …
Comparing The Social Responses Of Aids And Covid-19 Through Oral History, Elise Lee
Comparing The Social Responses Of Aids And Covid-19 Through Oral History, Elise Lee
Women's and Gender Studies Theses
In the past 40 years, the United States has faced 2 major public health crises: the AIDS epidemic, and the global COVID-19 pandemic. In this project I consider the various aspects of these public health emergencies such as sharing the burden of survival, the role of fear, the bastardization of identity politics, and queerness as a political project. I do this by analyzing oral histories and I argue that we can look at the AIDS epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic in parallel. During both AIDS and COVID, despite severely lackluster governmental responses, we saw overwhelming amounts of community organizing and …

The Phenomenology Of Experiencing Critical Thinking In Vocational Higher Education, Sean Castleberry
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated the role of critical thinking in vocational education within the Virginia Community College System by examining the lived experience of administrators, faculty, and students who are associated with vocational education. To complete this task, the researcher employed a phenomenological methodology primarily based on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and other phenomenological philosophers including Edmund Husserl, Mark D. Vagle, and Karin Dahlberg. The goal of the research was to serve as a beginning and help close the gap in knowledge concerning how critical thinking is defined in vocational education, why it is seen as an important part of …
A Graceful Pedagogy: An Approach To Academic Advising Diffracted Through Love For Equitable Support Of Students Identifying As Black And Male At Two-Year Community Colleges, Ian Kelso Bodkin
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the concept of “a graceful pedagogy” as a framework for academic advising within two-year community colleges, with a focus on supporting students who identify as Black and male. Guided by an approach rooted in diffractive methodology and inspired by bell hooks’ principles of love and engaged pedagogy, the research examines how advisors can create meaningful, equitable, and supportive relationships that account for the unique realities faced by these students. Through consciousness-raising sessions, the study captures the complexities of advising as an emotional, relational, and transformative practice. Participants engaged in intra-active dialogues of diffraction uncovering the entanglements of …
Cultivating Self-Knowledge In The Writing Classroom: A Study Of Contemplative Pedagogy, Jared Featherstone
Cultivating Self-Knowledge In The Writing Classroom: A Study Of Contemplative Pedagogy, Jared Featherstone
English Theses & Dissertations
This pedagogical research study examines the effects of Understanding the Self Through Writing and Rhetoric, an undergraduate course designed by the researcher, on students. The course is an example of contemplative writing pedagogy, one that seeks to foreground first-person direct experience of the subject matter and integrates mindfulness meditation and journaling throughout. While writing and rhetoric are common undergraduate subjects to teach, the course focuses on particular, lesser-known aspects of them, internal rhetoric and self-making narrative. A third important part of the course is the examination of how communication technologies, especially social media and messaging applications, affect one’s internal rhetoric …
A Training Model For Strategic Planning In Large Evangelical Churches, Ginger Ann Beady
A Training Model For Strategic Planning In Large Evangelical Churches, Ginger Ann Beady
Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
This dissertation explores strategic planning for churches in the post-Christendom era, where the cultural influence of Christianity has significantly diminished. The study aims to create a resource to help church leaders develop and implement strategic plans focused on long-term church health and sustainability. The first objective is to define what strategic planning entails and emphasize its necessity for fulfilling God's mission. Drawing on the Old Testament case study of Nehemiah and a New Testament survey, the research emphasizes the importance of effective planning within a biblical context. The second focus of this research question is to identify what to plan …

Designing An Identity: How Everyday Fashion Forms Latino Identity In The United States, Hailey M. Frick
Senior Theses
This study explores how everyday fashion acts a framework for understanding Latino identity in the United States. By examining the intersection of fashion studies and Latino studies, the research highlights the nuanced ways that Latinos use clothing as a tool for identity formation and expression, using symbolism and community belonging, which is rooted in tradition. Through case studies of individual expressions, the paper reveals how everyday fashion is a form of communication that allows people to negotiate both personal and collective identities. Ultimately, this paper utilizes everyday fashion to understand Latino identity, lives, and communities and their longstanding presence in …
Suffering As The Way To God, Marjorie Shahani
Suffering As The Way To God, Marjorie Shahani
LMU Theses and Dissertations
As a spiritual director and Christian, I desire to accompany women on their journey to a deeper personal relationship with God holding in tension the suffering Servant on the cross and the hope in the resurrected Christ. I long to illuminate their understanding of self-sacrifice and denial. Participating in Jesus’ suffering on the cross must not lead to neglect of oneself, denial of one’s human dignity, or the tolerance of any form of abuse – physical, emotional or mental. I comprehend the redemptive power in suffering for the love of God, but I also know Christ invites us to rejoice …
Mutations Of Grief: Pathological Loss And The Psychoanalytic Journey In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Sazia Islam
Mutations Of Grief: Pathological Loss And The Psychoanalytic Journey In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Sazia Islam
Student Theses and Dissertations
The intricacies of the human mind and the ways we comprehend and experience grief throughout our lives are subjects that many authors strive to depict, yet few achieve with accuracy and depth. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein exemplifies a nuanced and profound exploration of grief, interwoven within a narrative of overreaching ambition and its devastating consequences. In my thesis, I contend that Shelley masterfully crafted the Frankenstein narrative to demonstrate that grief can arise from losses extending beyond the physical death of loved ones, highlighting how the fluctuation between yearning and despair unveils the intricate psychological complexities of unresolved grief. Shelley’s thematic …
Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt
Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt
Theses
This project aims to develop an inclusive art history curriculum as a high school level course, addressing the traditional Western-centric focus that has been marginalized non-Western contributions. By pairing Western and non-Western artworks within a chronological framework, students can compare artistic expressions across cultures, emphasizing parallel histories rather than a single Eurocentric narrative. The curriculum employs diverse interpretive methodologies to foster critical thinking and challenge conventional narrative. Designed for a 20-week semester, it focuses on a smaller number of key artworks per unit to encourage meaningful engagement and projects. While still rooted in Western art, the course connects global artistic …
Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson
Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson
Theses
This paper discusses 18th Dynasty pharaohs Hatshepsut and Akhenaten and the images they portrayed during their reigns. Hatshepsut, though being female, adhered to the preconstructed image of a traditional male pharaoh while Akhenaten defied the long-established artistic canon in order to create a more androgynous pharaonic identity. Both did this to legitimize their rule, connect themselves to divinity, and interpret the duality of gender innate to Egyptian religion through their iconography. Hatshepsut’s masculine depictions cemented her as the father of the polytheistic Egyptian empire over which she reigned. Akhenaten’s more androgynous representations, on the other hand, portrayed him as both …
An Examination Of Food And Alcohol Disturbance Based On Sexual Orientation In A Sample Of Women Who Binge Eat, Alicia M. Moulder
An Examination Of Food And Alcohol Disturbance Based On Sexual Orientation In A Sample Of Women Who Binge Eat, Alicia M. Moulder
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD), characterized by disordered eating behaviors in the context of drinking alcohol to enhance intoxication, counteract alcohol’s calories, or both, is associated with increased risk of negative drinking consequences. Previously established as a phenomenon occurring in college students, research has begun to support that FAD may also occur in nonstudents. Three particularly vulnerable groups for FAD may include women, individuals with history of binge eating, as well as sexual minority individuals. Consequently, the goals of the current study were to elucidate differences in FAD engagement between sexual minority women (SMW) and heterosexual women using a sample …
Weight Bias Internalization And Disordered Eating: Examining The Role Of Sexual Orientation In A Sample Of Women Who Binge Eat, Meredith I. Turner
Weight Bias Internalization And Disordered Eating: Examining The Role Of Sexual Orientation In A Sample Of Women Who Binge Eat, Meredith I. Turner
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Sexual minority women and heterosexual women endorse different rates of disordered eating symptoms. Weight bias internalization (WBI), or self-directed negative attitudes and beliefs about oneself due to their weight, is known to be associated with binge eating and other disordered eating behaviors. However, little is known about the influence WBI may have on disordered eating symptoms across various sexual orientations. Therefore, this study examined disordered eating, WBI, and the association between them among sexual minority and heterosexual women. Specifically, the study aims were to (1) compare instances of WBI and disordered eating symptoms between sexual minority and heterosexual women, (2) …

Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzes two chamber music works by Korean composer Hyo-shin Na, Song of the Fog and From Korea to America, focusing on how the fusion of Eastern and Western instruments contributes to musical expression and timbral characteristics. It includes an examination of the role of instrumental arrangement and reveals the composer's narrative and emotional intentions. The aim is to present an insight into Hyo-shin Na’s ensemble style.
Song of the Fog uses the Japanese koto with Western chamber instruments to depict the imagery of the accompanying poetry through changes in timbre, dynamic contrasts, and various performance techniques. Despite …
