The Duality Of Perception: Unveiling The Hidden Through Visible Forms, Sharmeen Uqaili May 2025

The Duality Of Perception: Unveiling The Hidden Through Visible Forms, Sharmeen Uqaili

Art Theses and Dissertations

This MFA thesis, The Duality of Perception: Unveiling the Hidden through Visible Form, involves layering paints on shaped wood panels and paper, using the traditional technique of tezhib (gold illumination) and geometric art. Through these layers, I aim to challenge the viewers’ perceptions by simultaneously revealing and concealing elements within the work. Symbols drawn from Islamic traditions such as pomegranates, birds, and ribbons are incorporated in the paintings to carry both cultural and personal significance, evoking my connections to spiritual and physical realms.

Rooted in the principles of Islamic art and informed by spiritual themes such as paradise, divine …

Moments In The Making, Paige M. Harper May 2025

Moments In The Making, Paige M. Harper

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Gathering around a table with good company, sharing stories and food, creates lasting memories. These moments of warmth, laughter, and connection stay with us long after a meal is over. These experiences are the driving force that inspire the vessels | create. These vessels serve as conduits for connection, helping to shape and enhance the shared experience. These objects are not only individual pieces, but also components of broader compositions. I consider how they are related in space. Using repetition, contrast, proportion, and negative space, I strive to create cohesive visual experiences that invite curiosity.

Phenomenologies Of Women's Illness In Ingmar Bergman's 1970s Films, Sophia Rubino May 2025

Phenomenologies Of Women's Illness In Ingmar Bergman's 1970s Films, Sophia Rubino

Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses

It is no surprise that the chronically ill Ingmar Bergman featured recurrent motifs of illness throughout his oeuvre. What is more surprising is that this consequential component of these works remain largely unexplored. Cries and Whispers (Viskningar och rop, 1971), Face to Face (Ansikte mot ansikte,1976), and Autumn Sonata (Höstsonaten, 1978), are pivotal examples of this shift, where illness is not merely an individual experience for these women but a complex, embodied phenomenon that profoundly shapes interpersonal relationships, particularly within family structures. This thesis conceives phenomenologies of illness in three 1970s films by Ingmar Bergman – Cries and Whispers, Face …

He Who Rules "Cinema" Rules Everything: Kalimán As Bridge Between 1960s And 1970s Mexican Cinema, Jose Emilio Reyes Rocher May 2025

He Who Rules "Cinema" Rules Everything: Kalimán As Bridge Between 1960s And 1970s Mexican Cinema, Jose Emilio Reyes Rocher

Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses

Kalimán is a Mexican superhero whose adventures, along with his sidekick Solín, take them around the world and across various media platforms: radio, comics, and cinema. The cinematic tales of Kalimán reflect significant changes in Mexican cinema, society, and culture. The two Kalimán films, El Hombre Increíble and El Siniestro Mundo de Humanón, occupy a unique liminal position in Mexican National Cinema, capturing the transformations that took place during the early 1970s until 1976, a time now known as the Prodigious Decade.1 The Kalimán films also draw inspiration from “churro” films, particularly from the Luchadores genre, films often considered excessive …

Culturally Concordant Dbt Steps-A Intervention In Orthodox Jewish Schools, Arielle Hershkovich-Elgavi May 2025

Culturally Concordant Dbt Steps-A Intervention In Orthodox Jewish Schools, Arielle Hershkovich-Elgavi

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Existent research indicates that Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is an efficacious treatment for mental health issues in many adult and adolescent populations, yet there is little research on the effect of DBT on culturally diverse, underserved populations (Mercado, & Hinojosa, 2017). Orthodox Jews are a culturally diverse, understudied, and underserved population (Schnall et al., 2014), that contends with strong stigmas against mental health treatment (Gearing et al., 2022). Orthodox Jewish community teachings are governed by religious values and precepts with a resistance to secular influence (Freund & Band-Winterstein, 2017). The social-emotional learning that is occasionally taught in some community schools …

"A Miniature Replica Of Life": Reality, Critique, And The Burden Of Representation In Oscar Micheaux's Body And Soul, Maria Lagomarsino May 2025

"A Miniature Replica Of Life": Reality, Critique, And The Burden Of Representation In Oscar Micheaux's Body And Soul, Maria Lagomarsino

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

With the release of his controversial silent film Body and Soul (1925), filmmaker Oscar Micheaux elicited strong reactions from censors, critics, and audience members alike. While some praised the work as a triumph of Black filmmaking, others were horrified by Micheaux’s corrupt preacher storyline and supposedly negative characterizations. The creation of this film occurred during a particularly fraught period of history, which saw some Harlem Renaissance figures argue that only positive depictions deserved a place in the public discourse. With Body and Soul, however, Micheaux refused to be limited by this undue burden of representation. In this thesis, I further …

The Gaps Between The Stories: Motherteachers And The Impact Of The Patriarchy In Prek-12 Education, Tara S. Dimattia May 2025

The Gaps Between The Stories: Motherteachers And The Impact Of The Patriarchy In Prek-12 Education, Tara S. Dimattia

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

As a secondary–level English teacher and the mother of three school-age children, I have learned that women’s knowledge and their ways of knowing (Belenky et al., 1986), specifically in relation to their roles as mothers, is marginalized in the world of PreK–12 schooling. In this qualitative study, through use of co/autoethnography (Coia & Taylor, 2013) and by way of group meetings, written reflections, and participatory arts–based data collection, I examined and documented how women’s roles as mothers impact their teaching in the patriarchal field of education, and worked to determine the ways in which women navigate this dialectical relationship in …

Women Disrupting The "Roundness" In "No Name Woman" And Sula: How Maxine Hong Kingston's And Toni Morrison's Titular Characters Combat Restrictive Communal Norms Surrounding Sex, Michelle Victoria D'Alessio May 2025

Women Disrupting The "Roundness" In "No Name Woman" And Sula: How Maxine Hong Kingston's And Toni Morrison's Titular Characters Combat Restrictive Communal Norms Surrounding Sex, Michelle Victoria D'Alessio

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines how Maxine Hong Kingston’s “No Name Woman,” the opening chapter of her memoir, The Woman Warrior, and Toni Morrison’s novel, Sula, portray communal perceptions of women who contradict traditional gender norms surrounding sex. The titular characters in each of these stories express their sexualities in ways deemed unfit by their people and are accordingly demonized and outcast from their communities. These characters are afforded some subtle admiration for their personal power by the artists who are portraying them, but this reverence is inevitably rescinded and replaced by the disdain of the tight-knit communities surrounding them. This tension …

Analysis And Mathematical Recomposition Of The Art Of The Fugue, Joshua Cellar May 2025

Analysis And Mathematical Recomposition Of The Art Of The Fugue, Joshua Cellar

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The Art of the Fugue is a collection of 18 fugues and cannons written by Johann Sebastian Bach in the 1700s. Each piece starts with a single theme which is transformed, developed and mixed in fascinating mathematical combinations resulting in a distinctive musical style. In this paper, we use the method introduced in [7] to analyze 14 pieces from The Art of the Fugue. We focus on the variation of motifs from one piece to another as well as the complexities of mathematical transformations present throughout the entire collection. We also demonstrate how using maps of transformations and the rules …

The Monsters Are Due On Hillside Avenue: Paul Robeson And The Racialization Of The Peekskill Riots Of 1949, Joshua Dellacruz May 2025

The Monsters Are Due On Hillside Avenue: Paul Robeson And The Racialization Of The Peekskill Riots Of 1949, Joshua Dellacruz

History Honors Program

On August 27, 1949, a burning cross pierced the night sky in the quiet hills of Westchester County. As Howard Fast later recounted in Peekskill USA: There was a moment of silent cessation, and one of the men leaped up on the truck and cried, 'A cross is burning!' We could only see the glare, but the symbolic meaning was not lost upon us. In the sweet land the movement had been rounded out; the burning cross, the symbol of all that is rotten and evil in our land had blessed us. Our night was complete and we could do …

Women In The Environmental Movement: An Examination Of Maternalistic Rhetoric And Its Relationship To Modern Environmentalism In The 20th Century, Danielle Howie May 2025

Women In The Environmental Movement: An Examination Of Maternalistic Rhetoric And Its Relationship To Modern Environmentalism In The 20th Century, Danielle Howie

History Honors Program

From 1942 to 1953, the Hooker Chemical Company decided that an abandoned canal in Niagara Falls was the perfect place to dump 22,000 tons of toxic chemical waste, a common disposal practice that was largely unregulated by the local government. The company covered the 16 acres of hazardous waste with clay and sold it to the Niagara Falls Board of Education in 1953 for one dollar. With a warning included in the property deed that mentioned the presence of chemical waste, the company was excluded from all future liability.2 In the decades to follow, a suburban community would flower around …

Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella May 2025

Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella

History Honors Program

In December of 1972, President Richard Nixon ordered the bombing of North Vietnam, beginning on December 18th and lasting until the 30th. During this period 20,000 tons of bombs were dropped, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Vietnamese. The bombings would soon be known as the “12 Days of Christmas.” Major General Richard Secord, “master of covert operations” sat back and watched as North Vietnam was nearly destroyed. There was nothing that Vietnam could do to combat the U.S. military. Being in Secord’s position, he understood better than anyone that this was far more than a mere phenomenon. For …

Using Wearable Sensors For Gait Analysis: Measurement Accuracy For Linear Measurements, Chaenaya Underwood May 2025

Using Wearable Sensors For Gait Analysis: Measurement Accuracy For Linear Measurements, Chaenaya Underwood

English

The emergence of “new media” has fundamentally reshaped human interaction, relying on algorithm-driven content saturation to shape user experiences and reinforce cognitive biases. While digital platforms offer unprecedented access to information and global connectivity, they also contribute to emotional disengagement, increased anxiety, and diminished critical thinking. “New media” often isolates individuals, encouraging passive consumption and emotional dysregulation. However, the challenge lies not in technological advancements but in society’s lack of critical engagement and effective regulation. This paper examines the misuse of new technology and its negative implications on human behavior. Incorporating evidence from journal articles, books, and personal correspondence, this …

The First Amendment On Trial: Hate Speech, Free Speech And College Campuses, Maya Rotman May 2025

The First Amendment On Trial: Hate Speech, Free Speech And College Campuses, Maya Rotman

English

This thesis examines the tension between the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech and the harmful impact of hate speech on college campuses. As incidents of targeted, discriminatory rhetoric rise in academic settings, the need to reevaluate what constitutes protected speech has become increasingly urgent. Through legal analysis, including case law such as Brandenburg v. Ohio and Schenck v. United States, this paper argues that the Supreme Court must distinguish between constitutionally protected speech and harmful hate speech. The thesis uses contemporary case studies from college campuses across the country. It includes firsthand accounts from the University at Albany …

The Modern Gothic: Examining Humanity’S Relationship With Technology In Black Mirror’S Be Right Back, Ana Radojevic May 2025

The Modern Gothic: Examining Humanity’S Relationship With Technology In Black Mirror’S Be Right Back, Ana Radojevic

English

The Gothic genre, since its beginning, has been a reflection to society's fears and anxieties towards cultural and technological shifts. This thesis critically examines how Netflix's "Black Mirror" episode "Be Right Back" continues the Gothic tradition by reflecting contemporary fears of humanity's complex relationship with technology. Through an analysis of the traditional Gothic elements: haunting and death, the supernatural, and the uncanny-- "Black Mirror" is placed in the Gothic genre identifying fears of artificial intelligence and human identity. The episode's portrayal of an AI surrogate for a dead boyfriend, the episode is a cautionary tale about the limitations of technology …

Dwelling At The Gates Of Difference: The Intersection Of Beowulf, American Politics, And Monsters, Emma Rennard May 2025

Dwelling At The Gates Of Difference: The Intersection Of Beowulf, American Politics, And Monsters, Emma Rennard

English

Many political scientists, legal scholars, and American citizens have found themselves dedicating a great deal of time to asking why American politics has become so largely polarized over the last 10 years. We are seeing more than ever political acts of violence, families and friendships dissolved over political disagreements. We are witnessing the liquidation of civility in American politics, with a staple of current political debates being personal insults and aggression. Attitudes towards women have become more hostile and negative, attitudes towards transgender Americans have become more disparaging and dangerous. These political opponents become scapegoats and are dehumanized and politically …

Actitudes Lingüísticas Hacia El Español En Los Entornos Médicos Del Estado De Nueva York, Leann K. Nicholas May 2025

Actitudes Lingüísticas Hacia El Español En Los Entornos Médicos Del Estado De Nueva York, Leann K. Nicholas

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

In sociolinguistics, language attitudes refer to perceptions, opinions, or beliefs about a language or language variety and its speakers. These attitudes often reflect and reinforce ideologies that favor a dominant or standard language while stigmatizing minority or non-standard languages. New York State is a uniquely multilingual region encompassing both highly urban and rural areas. Its cultural and linguistic composition has been changing rapidly, including a growing Spanish-speaking population. Despite this shift, a gap exists in research on language attitudes toward Spanish-speaking individuals in New York’s healthcare settings. Healthcare is not a universal experience, and previous studies have shown that unaddressed …

Her Hideous Progeny: Frankenstein'S Legacy, Adaptability, And Contemporary Prominence To Critical Story Telling, Ryan Penske May 2025

Her Hideous Progeny: Frankenstein'S Legacy, Adaptability, And Contemporary Prominence To Critical Story Telling, Ryan Penske

English (MA) Theses

This thesis situates the narrative of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley with two contemporary adaptations Get Out (2017) by Jordan Peele and Poor Things (2023) by Yorgos Lanthimos. The original 1818 Frankenstein text is composed of different discourses about race, gender, monstrosity, and what it means to be an abject other. As a text full of critical discourse, it has reached great popular culture legacy and has become adapted numerous times over the past two centuries. This thesis explores and acknowledges instances where the text has been adapted and applied to harmful discourses, such as British Prime Minister George Canning’s use …

"Homesick For You:" An Archival Analysis Of Love Letters From World War Ii, Cambria B. Acheson May 2025

"Homesick For You:" An Archival Analysis Of Love Letters From World War Ii, Cambria B. Acheson

English (MA) Theses

In this project, I cherish and explore a collection of correspondence exchanged between a married couple during World War II. Applying an embodied research approach that incorporates archival, historical, and cultural studies, I analyze key elements of these letters with special attention for themes of love and family, valuing their insights to touching personal stories that nuance the dominant narratives of history. I contend for the preservation and discussion of these letters and similar artifacts, advocating for their lasting significance within both past and present contexts and their irreplaceable contributions to the cultivation of collective memory and empathy across generations.

Recollections Of A Tejana Life, Carolina Yáñez May 2025

Recollections Of A Tejana Life, Carolina Yáñez

Art Theses and Dissertations

This thesis encompasses the life of a young woman navigating life in Texas through various political and social barriers. My interdisciplinary practice analyzes the historical context of Mexicans in Texas from its Revolutionary period into current injustices. Through fiber, printmaking, and photography I create a visual diary to illustrate what the political has made personal. These works display the beauty of Tejano culture, but also the power struggles that threaten communities I care for, as well as my own existence that persists against far-right wing agendas.

Current politics and government leadership in Texas have inspired me to make artwork calling …

Using Motivation Science To Understand And Overcome Common Psychological Barriers To Non-Native Language Learning In Beginner And Intermediate College Courses, Ahana Nagarkatti May 2025

Using Motivation Science To Understand And Overcome Common Psychological Barriers To Non-Native Language Learning In Beginner And Intermediate College Courses, Ahana Nagarkatti

College Honors Program

This project examined whether established findings from the motivation science literature could be successfully applied to increase non-native language learning outcomes and persistence among college students. Participants were enrolled in beginner and intermediate language courses at a small private college. The study was longitudinal and involved “diagnosing” and immediately implementing interventions to counter deficits experienced by individual students regarding six specific motivational antecedents: expectancies for success, utility value, costs, autonomy, belonging, and growth mindsets. Over the course of a semester, participants’ motivational experiences in these areas were measured and they then completed tailored “just-in-time” intervention activities designed to increase their …

A Narrative-Focused Machine Learning Approach To Predicting Feature Film Success, Arisa T. Trombley May 2025

A Narrative-Focused Machine Learning Approach To Predicting Feature Film Success, Arisa T. Trombley

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (MS) Theses

For decades, the field of film production has been driven by marketability, and it has relied on gut feelings and subjectivity to produce feature films. The analysis of the relationship between a screenplay’s narrative and a film’s success has been widely overlooked due to the challenges involved in data acquisition and complexity. This study investigates the predictive power of narrative structure on film success and aims to build evidence for hypothesized narrative principles. The results suggest that narrative structural elements exhibit moderate predictive power, with strong support for the alignment of the 2nd act crucial moments and the 2nd act …

“How Close To The Edge We Are”: Ecologically Reading The Frontiers Of Joan Didion’S Early Nonfiction, Mia R. Speller May 2025

“How Close To The Edge We Are”: Ecologically Reading The Frontiers Of Joan Didion’S Early Nonfiction, Mia R. Speller

Honors Theses

Joan Didion’s work is heavily regional and rooted in place, whether that be the place about which she writes or, by contrast, the place she leaves in order to do her writing. This place-based context takes root in many American ideologies and mythos, like that of the frontier mentality and golden dream. For this reason, exploring Didion’s use of natural metaphor and description as she discusses various cultural phenomena is essential to understanding the layers of her social critiques of 1960’s and 1970’s American culture, especially as they reflect on the failures of the frontier ideology. Further, looking at her …

Deliverance, Beth Odum Walker May 2025

Deliverance, Beth Odum Walker

All Theses

My work explores quilting as a vessel for storytelling, honoring the tradition of women’s craft while examining the intersection of personal and generational history. By repurposing fabric imbued with past lives and memories, I construct pieces that embody both the resilience and fragility of the individuals in my family, capturing their struggles, aspirations, and constraints. Through abstraction, material manipulation, and narrative layering, my quilts function as both historical records and contemporary reflections, bridging the past and present through the tactile language of textile art. In describing a quilt as an object, I am including all material, patterning, orientation, scale, and …

The Shame Of (Be)Longing In Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy, Grace S. Miholic May 2025

The Shame Of (Be)Longing In Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy, Grace S. Miholic

All Theses

This thesis examines the role of shame in Kincaid's Lucy. Separated into four separate sections, the thesis moves through Lucy’s relationship with her boss, Mariah, her Antiguan mother, and the shame that is identified at the end of the novel. In the introduction, I identify the passage that frames the novel around shame. I then identify my thesis, which centers around Lucy’s shame and her inability and refusal to situate herself with neither Mariah nor her mother’s expectations. The second section of the thesis revolves around Mariah and the form of feminism that skews her perception and expectations of …

The Rise And Fall Of The Contagious Diseases Acts: An Examination Of The Legislative Influences, Medical Discourse And Repeal Arguments, Elizabeth Henderson May 2025

The Rise And Fall Of The Contagious Diseases Acts: An Examination Of The Legislative Influences, Medical Discourse And Repeal Arguments, Elizabeth Henderson

All Theses

The Contagious Diseases Acts (CDA) were the most important legislative intervention concerning sexuality in the nineteenth century. The CDA was a public health measure passed to address the spread of venereal disease amongst the British Army and Navy, and targeted Britain's most vulnerable women – sex workers – because they were blamed for being the presumed cause and primary mode of spreading venereal disease. This resulted in the legalization of what critics of the CDA would call surgical assault, or instrumental rape, of working-class women suspected of being sex workers. Historians who study sexuality and sex work in Britain have …

Migration And Diaspora: An Intersectional Feminist Reading Of Lucy By Jamacia Kincaid., Benjamin Oluwakayode Akinlabi May 2025

Migration And Diaspora: An Intersectional Feminist Reading Of Lucy By Jamacia Kincaid., Benjamin Oluwakayode Akinlabi

All Theses

This thesis explores how migration and diaspora shape the intersectional experience of Black women through a close reading of Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy. Drawing on Black feminist thought, I make a case using analytical and theoretical frameworks to expand intersectionality to account for global movement and memory. Intersectionality must move beyond national borders to account for how power travels with people. I argue that migration works externally through movement and displacement, and diaspora works internally through memory. There is a location in the United States, but there is always a look back through memory and the two conflict. Lucy's migration …

Crusade From Afar: British Conservative Revolutionaries And The Nationalist Cause In Spain, Russell Crosthwait May 2025

Crusade From Afar: British Conservative Revolutionaries And The Nationalist Cause In Spain, Russell Crosthwait

All Theses

The Spanish Civil War catalyzed a distinctive intellectual movement among Britain's interwar right—the Conservative Revolutionaries. This thesis explores how this conflict provided ideological coherence to figures like Arnold Lunn, Arthur Bryant, and Douglas Jerrold, who occupied a unique position between conventional conservatism and fascism. Through organizations such as the Friends of Nationalist Spain, these intellectuals translated their abstract critiques of liberalism, democracy, and industrial capitalism into concrete political action. The thesis demonstrates that these figures were neither simple conservatives nor card-carrying fascists, but proponents of a third way between the two. This study challenges the conventional narrative that portrays British …

The Shift Of Western Power In The Anglo-American Relationship As Examined Through The Military Events Of World War Ii, Zaina A. Nait Omar May 2025

The Shift Of Western Power In The Anglo-American Relationship As Examined Through The Military Events Of World War Ii, Zaina A. Nait Omar

All Theses

How did the authority within the Anglo-American Alliance begin to shift toward the American domination that ruled the second half of the twentieth century? By examining the events of World War II, this thesis restructures the typical timeline with which historians have approached the dynamic of authority in the Anglo-American Relationship. Many historians claim that America was the perceived senior partner by 1941; however, this thesis demonstrates that by examining things from a military lens, that date must change. The British continued to operate under the intention of maintaining their global authority through 1945 and even into 1946. The thesis …
