Gustav Mahler - Conductor As Interpreter: A Comprehensive Study Of The Bach-Mahler Suite For Orchestra, Bryce Mara Seliger

Theses and Dissertations

This document is an examination of Mahler's contributions to the discipline of conducting through the Retuschen he made of other composers' works. Chapter 1 is an overview of Mahler's ideas on what interpretive responsibilities a conductor faces when he/she conducts other composers' music. It explores how his changes to other composers' scores give us a valuable glimpse of Mahler's own sense of interpretation as well as documents the nineteenth-century approach to performance practice.

Chapter 2 is a study of the history of Retuschen-making and how these modifications made by conductors exemplify a nineteenth-century attitude towards the music of the past. …

Caste, Desire, And The Representation Of The Gendered Other In U. R. Ananthamurthy's “Samskara,” “Ghatashraddha,” And “Akkayya”, Krishna Manavalli

English Theses & Dissertations

U.R. Ananthamurthy is an important Kannada writer who is situated in the navya (modern) literary movement that emerged in Karnataka in the post-independence South Indian context. This modern writer's works provide crucial insights into the postcolonial tensions of tradition-modernity, which figure importantly in modern Kannada literature. They engage with the issues of caste and gender in terms of the conflict between tradition and progress in the modern South Indian cultural discourse. Ananthamurthy's novel Samskara written in the 60's, and his short story “Ghatashraddha,” and “Akkayya,” written later, show how this writer's location within the upper caste discourse impacts his commitment …

Contemporary Western Representations Of Jesus In Islam, Harold Chad Hillier Jan 2001

Contemporary Western Representations Of Jesus In Islam, Harold Chad Hillier

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Unknown to many in “Christian” North American society, the person of Jesus is highly revered among the millions of Muslims in the world. This shared reverence for Jesus between Muslims and Christians allows for possible dialogue and greater understanding between adherents of the two religions. Moreover, the renewed interest in scholarship on Jesus, whether historical or theological, allows the Jesus traditions of Islam to become additional sources in this field of scholarship. Given these two reasons, the academic scholar of religion, then, has a motivation to dive into the growing wealth of discussions on the Islamic Jesus in the West. …

A Moment Of Transcendence: Encountering Each Other In And Beyond The Fiction Of Raymond Carver, Amy Lynn Leo Jan 2001

A Moment Of Transcendence: Encountering Each Other In And Beyond The Fiction Of Raymond Carver, Amy Lynn Leo

Honors Papers

This is an essay about reading Raymond Carver. It deals mostly with his work in general rather than with what individual stories mean or exemplify. My aim is to describe and understand the experience of Carver that I had upon my first reading. I will show how reading Raymond Carver can be a spiritual experience, and, in fact, was for me. The reading experience becomes spiritual when readers exchange meaning with the characters through identification and by doing so consider themselves in such a way that they fully embrace the patterns of their lives and manage to transcend them. Because …

Canons, Culture Wars And History: A Case Study Of Canonicity Through The Lens Of The Blithedale Romance, Daniel L. Shiffner Jan 2001

Canons, Culture Wars And History: A Case Study Of Canonicity Through The Lens Of The Blithedale Romance, Daniel L. Shiffner

Honors Papers

The act of reading a text is twofold. There not only needs to be a text present, but also a reader who understands and interprets that text. One can think of the act of reading as the creation of a second, interpretive text. This second text documents the reader's interpretations of the physical text at hand. While the primary text remains relatively stable throughout time, the second, interpretive text changes with every reading. While these readings are circumscribed to individual readers, the culture and historical situation that the readers exist within also influence him/her.

Michel Foucault proposed that one could …
