Richard Brautigan: Youth Fishing In America, Cheryl Walker Jan 1972

Richard Brautigan: Youth Fishing In America, Cheryl Walker

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

Richard Brautigan is an epiphenomenon in American literature. He seems to represent some sort of insubstantial alternative. While the academy of letters reads Beckett, Borges, and Nabokov, the kids read Brautigan...His appeal consists primarily in an irrepressible optimism (probably the brand of a woodsy Pacific Northwest background), a style flashing with artifice, and a total disregard for effete university culture. Mr. Brautigan is not himself the product of American higher education or of much formal training of any kind. Furthermore, his fund of simplicity and optimism is a relief for some from the profound despair of writers like Beckett. To …

The Essex Bridge: Transportation And Politics In The Early Republic, George W. Geib Jan 1972

The Essex Bridge: Transportation And Politics In The Early Republic, George W. Geib

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

THE years that followed the War for Independence are commonly viewed as a period of rapid economic expansion. Deriving from such elements as a growing population, new foreign markets, increased capital resources, and a confident public spirit, this expansion is known to include a variety of new business ventures, notably in manufacturing and in transportation. Such new ventures are normally pictured in their business context, showing few political overtones apart from sporadic opposition by rural legislators.1 This latter emphasis may be mistaken, however, because many of these early innovative business ventures faced challenges in the form of local political controversies …

Bartolome De Las Casas: Protector Of The Indians, Hubert J. Miller Jan 1972

Bartolome De Las Casas: Protector Of The Indians, Hubert J. Miller

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bartolome de las Casas devoted himself completely to crusading for the rights of the Indians. Although he was never a missionary among Indians, he began projects such as the Indians' conversion in the Land of War in Guatemala, which later became the task of his Dominican colleagues. However, his true importance lay in his role as the Indians' protector before the royal court. This was shown by his involvement in the debate of Valladolid, the decree of the New Laws of 1542, and the campaign for the abolition of the encomienda and Indian slavery. However, the significance of his crusade …

Hernan Cortes: Conquistador And Colonizer, Hubert J. Miller Jan 1972

Hernan Cortes: Conquistador And Colonizer, Hubert J. Miller

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

The conquest and colonization of Mexico initiated by Hernan Cortes resulted in the fusion of the Indian and Hispanic cultures. This fusion led to the "mestizo" culture. Cortes was the bearer of the Hispanic heritage just as the Aztecs and other Indians in Mexico and the Southwest were the carriers of the Indian heritage. In studying the life of Cortes, he is seen not only as a military conqueror but also as a colonizer in which role he left a more lasting legacy than he did as the victor over the Aztec Empire. This booklet focuses on Cortes' colonizing efforts. …
