Imitation And Creation: Bing Xin’S Fanxing (A Maze Of Stars) 繁星And Chunshui (Spring Water) 春水, Xiaoqing Liu

Xiaoqing Liu

Fanxing (A Maze of Stars) and Chunshui (Spring Water) are two poetry collections of modern Chinese woman writer Bing Xin (1900–1999). Because they stand at the beginning of a new genre, xiaoshi (short poetry), and are commonly regarded as representative works of this genre, people use the epithets “Bing Xin style,” “Fanxing style,” or “Chunshui style” to refer to xiaoshi writing. Nevertheless, viewed from their intimate relationship with Rabindranath Tagore’s Stray Birds, I argue that Fanxing and Chunshui are products of both imitation and creation. Imitation is not plagiarism. Dryden defines imitation as a form …

New York 1987, Tyler Fisher Dec 2018

New York 1987, Tyler Fisher

Tyler Fisher

Dedicated to the Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos (1914-1953), Sherezada (Chiqui) Vicioso's evocation of New York City conjures up a sensory experience of the bustling metropolis alongside references to its international, and especially Latino, ingredients. Vicioso depicts a city that is infused with but strangely unaware of its Hispanic heritage, which her enumeration of food, music, contraband, Afro-Caribbean spirits, and expatriates calls to the surface. The poem’s minimal punctuation, idiosyncratic line- and word-divisions, wordplay, blend of archaic and current diction, and sporadically disjointed syntax underscore a crowded, onrushing, almost incantatory medley of past and present, local and transnational. …

Tian As Cosmos In Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2017

Tian As Cosmos In Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Tian” is central to the metaphysics, cosmology, and ethics of the eight-hundred-year-long Chinese philosophical tradition we call “Neo-Confucianism,” but there is considerable confusion over what tian means—confusion which is exacerbated by its standard translation into English as “Heaven.” This essay analyzes the meaning of tian in the works of the most influential Neo-Confucian, Zhu Xi (1130-1200), presents a coherent interpretation that unifies the disparate aspects of the term’s meaning, and argues that “cosmos” does an excellent job of capturing this meaning, and therefore should be adopted as our translation of tian.

Beheading First: On Nabokov's Translation Of Lewis Carroll, Victor Fet

Victor Fet

Anya v Strane chudes, young Nabokov’s 1923 Russian translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, contains an intentionally shifted statement “beheading first, sentence later” compared to Lewis Carroll’s “sentence first, verdict later”. The shift is fitting for the 1920s children émigré audience.

Writing Language : Composition, The Academy, And Work., Bruce Horner

Bruce Horner

This paper argues that while college composition courses are commonly charged with remediating students by providing them with the literacy skills they lack, they may instead be redefined as providing the occasion for rewriting language and knowledge. By bringing to the fore the dependence of language and knowledge on the labor of writing, a pedagogy of recursion, mediation, and translation of knowledge through writing and revision counters neoliberalism’s commodification of knowledge and language, and offers an alternative justification for continuing education as the occasion for students to remediate language and knowledge through writing.

The Invaded Invading The Invaders, Daniel Reynaud

Daniel Reynaud

This article explores the impact of working on an anthology of Romanian poetry on an Australian academic. Having some exposure to world literature, the scholar discovers a new realm of poetic experience in a formerly obscure literary tradition previously almost inaccessible to Anglo scholarship. The article seeks to frame Romanian poetry in its broader historical context, as situate it in world literature.

Timothy G. Kearley

The Hagadah Of Pesah In Amazigh Tradition, J. G. A. Saviranta Dec 2015

The Hagadah Of Pesah In Amazigh Tradition, J. G. A. Saviranta

Akseli Saviranta

This document examines the text of the Hagadah of the Jewish festivity of Pesah as celebrated by the North African Amazighs of Tinghir in Morocco. Its beginning presents an overview of the history and the cultures of the Amazigh, Jewish, and Judeo-Amazigh communities in North Africa. The celebration of Pesah, as a milestone in Jewish creed and history, is studied within the North African context and with particular attention to the local Hagadah translations. Among these translations, the Judeo-Amazigh text of Tinghir represents one of the few if not the only known text in existence in a Judeo-Amazigh language. A …

Audacious Translation: On Being Haunted And Getting Lost On The Way To Translating Spivak. A Reflection On Spivak’S “Translating Into English”, Susan R. Adams Sep 2015

Audacious Translation: On Being Haunted And Getting Lost On The Way To Translating Spivak. A Reflection On Spivak’S “Translating Into English”, Susan R. Adams

Susan Adams

In “Translating Into English” within An Aesthetic Education in the Era of Globalization (2012), Spivak eludes apprehension, spurns comprehension, and resists neat translation as I, an American educator, attempt to make sense of what is meant by an aesthetic education as Spivak translates the act of translation. Caught and othered as a language broker in learning the double bind of translation, I find no answers, only new questions as I grope toward ways to conceptualize and to name this moment for translators and language educators: (1) What does it mean to be a translator?; (2) Can and should the convenient …

Translation, Power Hierarchy, And The Globalization Of The Concept “Human Rights”: Potential Contributions From Confucianism Missed By The Udhr, Sinkwan Cheng May 2015

Translation, Power Hierarchy, And The Globalization Of The Concept “Human Rights”: Potential Contributions From Confucianism Missed By The Udhr, Sinkwan Cheng

Sinkwan Cheng

This essay strikes new paths for investigating the politics of translation and the (non-) universality of the concept of “human rights” by engaging them in a critical dialogue. Part I of my essay argues that a truly universal concept would have available linguistic equivalents in all languages. On this basis, I develop translation into a tool for disproving the claim that the concept human rights is universal. An inaccurate claim to universality could be made to look valid, however, if one culture dominates over others, and manages to impose its own concepts and exclude competitors. Part II explores how human …

Produkt-Orientierte Übersetzung: Weg Von Der Insel, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

"Quotation, Simile, Photograph: Margaret Fuller On The French In Algiers, Christina Zwarg

Christina L Zwarg Professor

Quotation, Simile, Photograph: Margaret Fuller on The French in Algiers In this essay I focus on an obscure New-York Daily Tribune column written by Margaret Fuller and published roughly two weeks before her well-known review of Frederick Douglass. Fuller’s review of Lucy Duff-Gordon’s translation shows not only her range in topic (in this case, a consideration of French colonial practice) but also how she writes through the moment when Walter Benjamin’s famous “aura” was losing ground against modern modes of production. The extended quotations juxtaposed in Fuller’s review have about them a visual or dramatic quality, as if Fuller reaches …

Literary Innovation In Yiddish Sea Travel Narratives, Ken Frieden Jan 2014

Literary Innovation In Yiddish Sea Travel Narratives, Ken Frieden

Ken Frieden

Sea travel was an influential literary genre in Europe in the eighteenth century, and this genre subsequently influenced enlightened and Hasidic Jewish circles. As a result, the genre of sea narratives assumed a significant role in the rise of modern Hebrew and Yiddish literature. This article considers the place of Yiddish sea narratives--adapted from Campe's Reisebeschreibungen and in Hasidic writings--in the early nineteenth century. Both enlightened and Hasidic authors shaped modern Yiddish and Hebrew prose.

I Strongly Believe In Teaching The Fundamental Skills Any Knowledge Worker In The 21st Century Needs, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

The most important characteristic of a typical technical translation project is that the text to be translated is linked to a product or service, whereas a text in a literary translation project typically stands alone. The fact that there is a strong connection between the source text and a product or service has many implications. First of all, consistency within and across documents and versions is of the utmost importance across the entire spectrum of technical translation projects. How do you make sure that multiple translators working on multiple text types within a large project, e.g. GUI, software strings, online …

Faster Translation, Anyone? Strategies For Reducing Translation Turnaround Time, Uwe Muegge Oct 2012

Faster Translation, Anyone? Strategies For Reducing Translation Turnaround Time, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Anyone who has worked long enough on the service provider side of the translation business knows that translation buyers typically only have two types of translation projects: the ones that are urgent and the ones that were due yesterday. As most commercial translation projects are closely linked to the effort of selling a product or service in international markets, the time required for translation can mean lost revenue due to the inability to generate sales in a given market. While many in our industry consider lengthy turnaround times for high-quality human translation a given, there are, in fact, many steps …
