Rethinking Ionesco’S Absurd: The Bald Soprano In The Interlingual Context Of Vichy And Postwar France, Julia Elsky Mar 2019

Rethinking Ionesco’S Absurd: The Bald Soprano In The Interlingual Context Of Vichy And Postwar France, Julia Elsky

Julia Elsky

Rereading Eugène Ionesco’s postwar play La cantatrice chauve (The Bald Soprano) in the light of the original, wartime Romanian version alongside archival materials concerning his political activity in Vichy France allows us to reconsider his role in the theater of the absurd. Instead of staging the emptiness of language in a conformist world, the Romanian play dramatizes how language and language exchange created meaning but also upheld state violence during the Second World War. Although the French version of the play adapts this theme to the postwar context, traces of state power over language remain. This new approach …

Part 4: Battle With Uss Kearsarge, Jack L. Dickinson Oct 2017

Part 4: Battle With Uss Kearsarge, Jack L. Dickinson

Jack L Dickinson

“June 19: Lying off Cherbourg. Moderate breeze from the westward. At 10:20 am discovered the Alabama steaming out of the port of Cherbourg, accompanied by a French ironclad steamer and a fore-and-aft rigged steamer, showing the white English ensign. Beat to general quarters and cleared for action. Steamed ahead, standing offshore, being distant from land about 2 leagues; altered our course and approached the Alabama." Official Records of Union and Confederate Navies, I, 3, p.64.

La Cité Des Enfants Perdus: La Grande Borne Ou Les Dérives D'Une Utopie Urbaine, Mame-Fatou Niang Oct 2015

La Cité Des Enfants Perdus: La Grande Borne Ou Les Dérives D'Une Utopie Urbaine, Mame-Fatou Niang

Mame-Fatou Niang

The Narrative Mediterranean: Beyond France And The Maghreb, Claudia Esposito Oct 2013

The Narrative Mediterranean: Beyond France And The Maghreb, Claudia Esposito

Claudia Esposito

The Narrative Mediterranean: Beyond France and the Maghreb examines literary texts by writers from the Maghreb and positions them in direct relation to increasingly querulous debates on the shifting identity of the modern Mediterranean. This book argues that reading works by writers such as Albert Camus and Tahar Ben Jelloun alongside authors such as Fawzi Mellah and Mahi Binebine in a transnational rather than binary interpretive framework transcends a colonial and postcolonial bind in which France is the dominant point of reference. While focusing on works in French, this book also examines Maghrebi authors who write in Italian.

The texts …

Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders Apr 2012

Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders

E. Stewart Saunders

Louis XIV during the fifty-five years of his personal reign (1661-1715) created the institutional foundations for the science and technology of France. These institutions were outwardly an attempt both to meet the needs of the French state for technical advice and to provide professional scientists with the necessary support for pure scientific research. In a less obvious sense, the origin and evolution of these institutions represented an attempt on the part of the monarchy to disentangle the pursuit of knowledge from the prevailing system of political patronage and from the political and religious speculation that fed the social conflicts of …

Operation Jedburgh: Creation Of Operation Jedburgh And The Jedburgh Team’S Efforts During D-Day, Olivia Blessing

Olivia L Blessing

Creation of Operation Jedburgh and the Jedburgh Team’s Efforts during D-Day The German invasion of France sparked a new type of war for Europe—one focused on covert operations and guerilla warfare. The French Resistance led the way in this new style of fighting, and the United States quickly offered its assistance to the partisan groups through the efforts of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The resulting cooperation effort, named Operation Jedburgh, and the teams involved, containing numerous OSS officers, played a very important role in the efforts to free France before, during, and after D-Day.

The Ethics Of Tax Evasion: A Quantitative Study Of French Bba Students, Dylan Kissane, Yuriy Barabantsev Dec 2010

The Ethics Of Tax Evasion: A Quantitative Study Of French Bba Students, Dylan Kissane, Yuriy Barabantsev

Dylan Kissane

The subject of ethical action in business has taken on special significance in recent years. With the business world rocked by ethical lapses and associated scandals at Enron, WorldCom and Tyco in the early part of the decade and then, in a time of global financial crisis, stunned again by multi-billion dollar frauds such as that at Société Générale, there is a new push to study the ethical and unethical behaviour of business people and future business people. While business schools have long been lauded for their preparation of students for the rigours of the world of business, finance and …

A Tale Of Two Campaigns: A Comparative Assessment Of The Internet In French And Us Presidential Elections, Dylan Kissane Apr 2010

A Tale Of Two Campaigns: A Comparative Assessment Of The Internet In French And Us Presidential Elections, Dylan Kissane

Dylan Kissane

French politicians, like those in democracies around the world, were enthralled by the success of Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the 2008 US Presidential elections. Part of that thrall sprung from the candidate’s embrace of internet campaigning and his use of Web 2.0 tools to communicate his ideas, raise campaign funds and break through to voters that might otherwise not be reached through traditional and mainstream media campaigning. In the wake of Obama’s win, speculation emerged that internet and Web 2.0 campaigning would soon become a key tool in French politics, particularly at the personality-driven and high-profile Presidential level. In …

Forecasting The Storm: Power Cycle Theory And Conflict In The Major Power System, Dylan Kissane Apr 2008

Forecasting The Storm: Power Cycle Theory And Conflict In The Major Power System, Dylan Kissane

Dylan Kissane

Unpredicted and unpredictable storms have cut a disastrous swathe through coastal communities in recent years. If the international relations system can be imagined as a peaceful coast, then conflict is the storm that wrecks havoc upon those in its path. One goal, then, of those within the discipline who study conflict is to forecast these international storms and, in power cycle theory, there exists a method which is of some utility to this end. This paper re-introduces power cycle theory, explaining its components and methodology before introducing the specific changes to the method that are the result of the author’s …

The Cultural Approaches To Multiculturalism: Education Policy And Its Implications In Culture, Linda Margaret Broughton Aug 2007

The Cultural Approaches To Multiculturalism: Education Policy And Its Implications In Culture, Linda Margaret Broughton

Linda Margaret Broughton

The purpose of this discussion is to analyse three different European states in their approaches to education policy and culture. Each example of a national policy approach is considered separately, as an individual container (or thimble) with a distinct approach to policymaking and culture that is reflected through structure and content. At the same time, the discussion will analyse the comparative advantages of the separate systems in order to illustrate how one approach may address an issue that is problematic in another approach. The purpose of this discourse is to illustrate how a more comprehensive approach to culture in education …
