The Nwagu Aneke Project, Donatus Nwoga, Chukwuma Azuonye, Nelson Okonkwo, Pat Ndukwe, O. S. Ogwueleka, F. U. Okafor, P. N. Ngwu, Iroha Udeh Dec 1990

The Nwagu Aneke Project, Donatus Nwoga, Chukwuma Azuonye, Nelson Okonkwo, Pat Ndukwe, O. S. Ogwueleka, F. U. Okafor, P. N. Ngwu, Iroha Udeh

Chukwuma Azuonye

The Nwagu Aneke script is a syllabic system of writing, among the riverian Igbo people of Umuleri in the Omambala (Anambra) basin of present day Anambra State of Nigeria. A system which occupies a well-established niche in the history of writing, syllabic writing has traditionally been categorised as an intermediate stage between phoneticized pictographic and alphabetic systems. However, as this research project intends to demonstrate, the more we can understand the provenance, nature and other aspects of the script, the more we can understand certain aspects of the evolution of writing systems on which there is doubt, debate or paucity …

Women In ‘Akritic’ Song: The Hero’S ‘Other’ Voice, Nancy Sultan Dec 1990

Women In ‘Akritic’ Song: The Hero’S ‘Other’ Voice, Nancy Sultan

Nancy Sultan

Women have long been considered marginal in rural Greek society. In the mythic realm of Greek heroic song, however, women are empowered over the life-cycle of the wandering male hero. Through their connections with the natural world, their management of all rites of passage, and their timely verbal expressions of panos in ritual laments, women control the hero's seasonality and have the power to bring his life full circle. The hero spends his youth as a wandering ksenitemenos whose life is external and sterile, occupied with the exclusively male· panos of trials of manhood. Once the hero returns home, he …

What Ship Goes There: The Flood Narratives In The Gilgamesh Epic And Genesis Considered In Light Of Ancient Near Eastern Temple Ideology, Steven W. Holloway Dec 1990

What Ship Goes There: The Flood Narratives In The Gilgamesh Epic And Genesis Considered In Light Of Ancient Near Eastern Temple Ideology, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

Despite efforts made to understand the Mesopotamian and Genesis flood narratives as cosmogonies, the architecture and religious symbolism of the arks remain a scholarly embarrassment. Comparisons of the design of the arks described in Gilgamesh XI and Genesis 6—8 traditionally have focused on the sharp incompatibility of their dimensions. I shall attempt to demonstrate by a close

Messianic Themes In Portuguese And Brazilian Literature In The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Carole A. Myscofski Dec 1990

Messianic Themes In Portuguese And Brazilian Literature In The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Carole A. Myscofski

Carole Myscofski

Between 1819 and 1897, three messianic movements were launched in the north- eastern interior region of Brazil, in the states of Pernambuco and Bahia, drawing to their enclaves not only hundreds of backlanders but also extensive military repression. The three unsuccessful sects prophesied the imminence of the Last Days, of the End of the World in cosmic terms, and had as their extraordinary emissary of the final catastrophe neither Jesus nor any Christian saint but rather a short-lived but long-lamented Portuguese monarch of the sixteenth century. The nostalgia for Rei Dom Sebastião was, however, not limited to a cluster of …

Review Essay Of Two Books On The History Of Science, Charles Kay Smith Dec 1990

Review Essay Of Two Books On The History Of Science, Charles Kay Smith

Charles Kay Smith

Contrary to what I was taught in high school in the mid-1940s, science is no longer defined as an inductive methodology for immaculately conceiving culture-free truth after sifting through a huge data base of objective facts. For without some prior hypothesis to guide her, a scientist would not be able to decide which facts were relevant. Nowadays hypotheses can come from anywhere in the imagination or culture within which the scientist is working. The importance of a scientific hypothesis is that it be framed in such a way that it can be falsified when tested. Science now has a history …

A Basochien Proto-Drama And Its Mariological Context: L' Adovocacie Nostre-Dame, Daniel Terkla Dec 1990

A Basochien Proto-Drama And Its Mariological Context: L' Adovocacie Nostre-Dame, Daniel Terkla

Daniel Terkla

This essay, which is excerpted from a longer initial study of L’Advocacie Nostre Dame, is primarily expository and exploratory in nature. Little has been written about this fascinating text, and the bulk of what has been done dates from the second half of the nineteenth century. This slim body of critical writing is, to say the least, out-dated and deserving of a fresh look. L’Advocacie is critically interesting, highly entertaining, and rather puzzling in a number of aspects, particularly in those related to its genre. Work on it has the potential to provide us with new insights into a …

"When in Rome" has been my rule, so during stints in Australia I tried to do research into things Australian. one result was a series of studies of the interesting educational history of Perth. The background of Hale School and the early secondary school history of the city was somewhat confusing, so this piece attempted to sort things out.
