Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Putting scriptural texts into historical and cultural context has the potential to open up new insights and reveal what may have been hiding in plain sight. By allowing what might seem familiar in a modern perspective to be seen in the new light of a different cultural world, the ancient meaning can become clear.

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The book of Jarom is a short chapter, consisting of only fifteen verses, that nonetheless manages to summarize the affairs of the Nephites over an approximately forty-year period. In the midst of his outline of the current Nephite status quo, Jarom makes mention of the religious climate of the time: “Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he …

The Charge Of Being Deluded Interpreters Of Scripture: A Reassessment Of The Importance Of Chiasms In Mark 11–12, Benson Goh
The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies
Although much attention has been given to the structure and meaning of Mark 11–12, the chiastic structures in that passage have not been sufficiently observed nor appreciated for their contribution to the Markan message. The grave mistake and failure of the Sadducees in 12:18- 27, and of the religious establishment in the larger context of chs. 11–12, was that of being deluded in their interpretation of Scripture. This might not seem clear at first to modern readers , but once the chiasms, ergasia chreia elaboration, and contextual evidences are shown and explained, the purposeful use of these rhetorical structures in …
A Mixed-Methods Study Of The Variables That Influence Southern Baptists’ Affirmation Of The Inerrancy Of The Bible, David A. Mcgee
A Mixed-Methods Study Of The Variables That Influence Southern Baptists’ Affirmation Of The Inerrancy Of The Bible, David A. Mcgee
Christian Perspectives in Education
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) had discovered by the late 1970s that belief in the inerrancy of the Bible was not consistently affirmed by their leadership. After a twenty year battle, the SBC attempted to clarify the doctrine of inerrancy through the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. A mixed-method analysis was conducted by surveying 502 Florida Southern Baptist (FSB) church members with a 68-question survey instrument to determine the degree to which they affirmed the doctrine of inerrancy. The study revealed that a large percentage of FSB church members affirmed the doctrine, but the underlining beliefs were not always consistently …

Which Are The Most Important Mormon Books?, Arnold K. Garr
Which Are The Most Important Mormon Books?, Arnold K. Garr
BYU Studies Quarterly
The very abundance of books in our days—a stupefying and terrifying abundance—has made it more important to know how to choose," observed historian James Bryce. "The first piece of advice I will venture to give you is this," he added. "Read only the best books.... Let not an hour... be wasted on third-rate or second-rate stuff if first-rate stuff can be had." This wise counsel is in harmony with the scriptural injunction "seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom" (D&C 88:118). This marvelous passage of scripture is exhilarating but leaves one to wonder, which are the best …

“The Great And Dreadful Day Of The Lord”: The Anatomy Of An Expression, Dana M. Pike
BYU Studies Quarterly
Speaking of the last days, the Lord declared through the ancient Israelite prophet Malachi that Elijah would return "before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord" (Mal. 4:5). And through the prophet Joel, the Lord foretold signs in the heavens "before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come" (Joel 2:31). Jesus' Second Coming is the "day of the Lord" referred to in these prophecies. Many Latter0day Saints interpret the phrase "the great and dreadful [or terrible] day of the Lord" to mean the Lord's Second Coming will be "great," or good and desirable, …
