The Political Function Of Luther's Doctrina, James R. Preus
The Political Function Of Luther's Doctrina, James R. Preus
Concordia Theological Monthly
Theology is implicitly political; Luther’s career as theologian demonstrates this principle clearly. By attacking the papacy's doctrine, Luther attacked the framework of society in 16th-century Europe. The doctrine of faith had explosive political implications, and Luther found himself increasingly forced to place limits on the political conclusions drawn from his work by his followers, chiefly through his construction of the two-kingdoms teaching.
The Just Shall Live By Faith, Otto W. Heick
The Just Shall Live By Faith, Otto W. Heick
Concordia Theological Monthly
When did Luther reach the reformation insight into the doctrine of Justification? The author reviews the literature on the question, and brings to the attention of American readers the work of Uuras Saarnivaara, which has received little scholarly attention since its publication.
Wisdom And Law In Old Testament Wisdom Literature, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer
Wisdom And Law In Old Testament Wisdom Literature, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer
Concordia Theological Monthly
In this article the author shows how the Jewish understanding of wisdom and law changed, especially in the intertestamental period. Wisdom, under the influence of Hellenistic thought, became almost a personal mediator between God and man, although it had originally been used to describe a certain style of living. The word "law" also underwent a change from its first meaning of guidance, to a later meaning in Deuteronomy of "the revelation of Yahweh's will to Israel," to the final identification of law with wisdom as the mediator between God and His creation, including especially man.
The Relationship Between Psalm 22 And The Passion Narrative, Harvey D. Lange
The Relationship Between Psalm 22 And The Passion Narrative, Harvey D. Lange
Concordia Theological Monthly
The author suggests that Jesus' use of Ps. 22 in His cry of dereliction from the cross is best understood as an example of typological rather than rectilinear fulfillment of an Old Testament word.
