From colonial times until the 19th century, the dominant American view of wildlife and its management was dualistic—wildlife species were divided into good animals (those which had commercial value or could be eaten) or bad animals (those which threatened the colonists’ safety or food supply). Philosophically, early colonial Americans believed that the environment was to be manipulated for man’s purposes. Under the impact of modernization, Darwinian influence, over-exploitation of resources, and environmentally-conscious professionals, Americans in the late 19th century began to appreciate the recreational value of wildlife and to develop a more protective attitude toward it. The Symposium on Worship and the Arts at Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary aims to bring together worship leaders and planners, pastors and church members, artists and musicians from many church traditions for a time of learning, discussion, and fellowship around preaching, church drama, organ, choirs, worship, Christian art and congregational song. This year's conference again is both ecumenical and Reformed, both principled and practical, both appreciative of a heritage and open to contemporary expression.

This paper focuses on Muir's first public lecture and its importance as one of several turning points in his evolution as a public figure. The venue was the Congregational Church in Sacramento in January 1876. The lecture was the fifth in a series sponsored by the Literary Institute. Muir approached this task with fear, began poorly and with apology, finally recalled his topic, enthralled the large audience with his discussion and illustration of the current and ancient glaciers of California, and built enough confidence to agree to his second lecture, a few months later in San Jose.
