This study aims at examining the increasing popularity of Bollywood films in Pakistani market and its dynamic effects on various segments of Pakistani society such as criminals and victims. It primarily analyzes the contribution of Bollywood blockbusters to the demography of violent criminals and silent victims in real crime scene of the country across the four decades (i.e. 1970s, 80s, 90s & 2000s). It is arbitrarily assumed that violence is often projected on silver screen as a quick and easy remedy to social injustice and class discrimination in the blockbusters of Bollywood and Lollywood.

Civil War And Globalization: The Effect Of Colonialism On Political Globalization, Luke O. Feltz

The purpose of this paper to determine why civil war onset reduces political globalization in former British colonies. Through linear regression and logistic regression analyses, I test the affect of civil war onset and the presence of civil war on political globalization, controlling for former British colonies, French colonies, and other factors. More important, however, is the history behind British colonialism. Through setting up a unique institutional system and maintaining ties to its former colonies, the British have created an atmosphere conducive to international political engagement after the onset of civil war. Baroque opera cannot be studied without acknowledging the castrated male singers, or castrati, who drew wild critical acclaim throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy. Even the most impoverished Italians were known to forego their daily bread to witness the arias of the castrati. But what made these singers so incredibly popular? This paper argues that the popularity of the castrato in 18th century Italy was due to the castrato's uniquely paradoxical nature, viewed by the public both as sexual and spiritual. Following World War II, Italy's production outputs lagged significantly compared to its pre-war rates. However, America's European reconstruction initiative, Marshall Plan, allowed Italy's floundering industries to rebuild themselves into independent and stable companies. This paper focuses specifically on America's aid to the Italian textile industry and how the contributions of America raised Italian couture to an internationally recognized style.

Oregon's Compulsory Education Act, passed in 1922 and rejected by the Supreme court in 1925, required that all school-aged children attend public school. It was a direct attack on Catholics and Catholics schools by the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) and the Oregon Masons. However, when selling this idea to the public, the KKK and Masons never mention Catholics or any anti-Catholic sentiment behind the bill, and sold it purely as a public-school protective measure - thus they kept their bigotry "quiet."

The cathedral in Cologne, Germany, serves as a monumental symbol of unity because of the thousands of people who have helped with its design, planning, and construction. Begun as a Gothic masterpiece in 1248, abandoned half-finished for several hundred years, and finally restored and completed in the 1800s, the cathedral has remained a stalwart icon of the unity of the city. From the 19th century to the present, the Cologne cathedral remains a source of national pride.

Mao Zedong's rise to power has been viewed through many lenses, such as through the downfall of the Kuomintang or through his opportunism, but this paper examines: to what extent did Mao utilize Edgar Snow’s Red Star Over China to consolidate power? This question is answered by looking at Snow’s work, other historians' view of Snow's work, and reviews of Red Star when the book was first released in 1937. Although many of the Hippocratic Corpus' anatomical, physiological and pathological doctrines have since been superseded, the premise of On the Sacred Disease - that disease is of a physical origin - stimulated the rise of rational, secular, and systematic medicine over magico-religious healing and the recognition of medicine as a true techne, or science. Before the time of Hippocrates, 'pre-scientific' Western medicine was predominantly magico-religious or characterized by magic-based appeals to supernatural beings. In On the Sacred Disease, however, Hippocrates attributes disease to both internal and external factors. Further holding that prognosis should be based on thorough examination, Hippocrates required …

Despite the growing relevance of the Central Asian region to modern-day foreign affairs, little is generally understood by the public about these countries. Few people can name the five Central Asian republics and even fewer understand the complicated social, political, and religious history of the region. This paper explores the prevalence of Islam in the Central Asian states and the influence of the former Soviet Union's anti-religious policies on the region. The era of colonization of the Americas began in 1492 with Columbus. However, it is not until the Roanoke Colonies in 1584 and 1587, that England attempted to claim part of this new land for itself. However, both colonies failed. The first ended when the inhabitants returned to England after a year on Roanoke Island while the second, known as the Lost Colony, mysteriously disappeared. The August 28, 1963 March on Washington is often remembered primarily for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which serves as the pinnacle of civil rights movement oratory. This thesis, in contrast, examines speeches of the leaders of the “Big Six” organizations that preceded King’s well-known words in order to shed light on the complexities of the movement and the outcomes that can result from meaningful dissent. Dante’s Divine Comedy had a substantial history of illustration before Sandro Botticelli (1444/5-1510) was commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici to produce 102 drawings to accompany the text. Botticelli is often described as a studious, humanist artist, incorporating his understanding of classical texts and observational knowledge into his works. This research paper will explore the innovative nature of Botticelli’s series of drawings, especially as it relates to his graphic style, varying modes of composition, and conceptual priorities. It will also analyze the conceptual differences between the Inferno and Paradiso.

This essay analyzes the various strategies that museums have employed over the years in order to obtain the money necessary for acquisitions, conservation, and operating costs. It touches upon taxation, endowments, investment, debt, public and private donations, corporate sponsorship, earned profit, deaccessioning, and innovative financial solutions that can only be described as ‘miscellaneous.’ The essay makes a distinction between three different types of museums: nonprofits, for-profits, and “hybrids.” It delineates numerous fundraising and cost-saving methods, and highlights the sheer diversity of funding sources available to museums. These findings are particularly relevant in light of the current financial crisis.

The Undergraduate Student Symposium, sponsored by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, presents student projects through presentations, papers, and poster displays. The event serves as a “showcase” demonstrating the outstanding scholarship of undergraduate students at NSU. The Symposium is open to undergraduate students from all disciplines. Projects cover areas of student scholarship ranging from the experimental and the applied to the computational, theoretical, artistic, and literary. Video games are fun. The fictional environments and plots they generate are designed with solely this purpose: to entertain. Some try to accomplish this goal by creating environments that are novel to most gamers, but most get by with reusing plots, settings, and language from older games, movies, books or historical periods. One such game, Bethesda's Fallout 3, draws on the imagery, language, and structure of Cold War America to create a chilling, post apocalyptic Washington D.C., complete with anit-communist propaganda posters and giant, irradiated cockroaches.
