Employability studies continue to highlight the fact that digital media design graduates may not be sufficiently prepared to bridge the gap between university and industry. In response, an alternative learning and teaching approach for digital media design education, the POOL Model framework, was developed and subsequently trialled at an Australian university. A broad underpinning strategy of the framework is to reflect industry practice through implementing workplace realities such as multidisciplinary teamwork. Different types of accountability systems may be found in education. For instance Anderson (2005) distinguishes between the following three main types, namely (1) detailed institutional regulation of educational activities and compliance to this; (2) acknowledgement of professional norms and adherence to these and (3) specification of expected results and evaluation of performance. Throughout the late nineteenth century, the Jamaican colonial government along with several religious institutions established a small network of Industrial Schools as well as a Reformatory to house criminal, destitute, and displaced juveniles. Advocates of the industrial school system argued that the goal of an industrial school education was to create good colonial citizens. A gender- based vocational oriented curriculum was promoted on the grounds that such an education enforced values of self-sufficiency and thrift. This paper examines the origins, development, and effects of test based accountability between 1976 and 2009. A designer-focused approach is often taken when observing co-design processes and the designers’ learning is reflected rather than the users. This study takes an all-inclusive angle in observing an inclusive design workshop which involved five professional designers, five users from a diverse backgrounds, and five design researchers. Designers intentionally influence events and outcomes, making an internal locus of control (LOC) desirable for them to have. Recently, engineering programs have provided more opportunities for design in their undergraduate programs than in the past, but these do not attend to learners’ LOC. In this short paper we discuss our explorations with adopting reflective design as an approach to designing a digital archive for the performing arts. The stakeholders in this project are diverse, comprised of members of the partner organisation, the public, the design team and government funding agencies. Each stakeholder has different expectations and skills to bring to the project. It is proposed that reflective design with its mix of critical reflection with a human centred design and prototyping approach provides a methodological framework that enables the complexities of the project to be integrated into an action orientated design exploration.

This paper explores the utilization of design skills and approaches by non-designers within the context of rehabilitation in healthcare. The author proposes that within us all is the set of skills, strategies and modes of thinking commonly found in designers that, if recognised, understood and practiced, could potentially be harnessed by nondesigners to assist them in everyday situations. Rather than this usurping the designers’ role, designers may have the potential to help ‘unlock’ these capabilities in others and help change the patient-to-healthcare professional relationship. This article is about how experiential knowledge that the craftsmen gains in a direct physical interaction with a responding material can be transformed and utilized in the use of digital technologies. The article presents an experiment with a 3D interactive and dynamic system to create ceramics from the human voice and thus how digital technology makes new possibilities in ceramic craft. 3D digital shape is created using simple geometric rules and is output to a 3D printer to make ceramic objects. The system demonstrates the close connection between digital technology and craft practice.
