Simulations Of The Androgynous Society: Shattering Gender Stereotypes In George Eliot’S Silas Marner, Jessica L. Wall Mar 2017

Simulations Of The Androgynous Society: Shattering Gender Stereotypes In George Eliot’S Silas Marner, Jessica L. Wall

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

This paper examines George Eliot's novel Silas Marner and the compelling argument it asserts against Victorian gender stereotypes. Through the contradictory successes of characters that fail to conform to their expected niches, Eliot presents her revolutionary vision for an androgynous society. Most notably, Silas’s accidental motherhood redeems his purpose while saving Eppie's life, Priscilla's ability to protect the well-being of her family stems from her avoidance of a husband and assumption of a “masculine” managerial position, and Eppie’s idyllic life with Silas is preserved by her refusal to be treated as a possession by male authority figures. Through the experiences …

Hollywood, The Media, And The Alteration Of Image In The 1940s, Sean M. Conrad Mar 2017

Hollywood, The Media, And The Alteration Of Image In The 1940s, Sean M. Conrad

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

I am currently writing a feature-length screenplay entitled Klara based on true events and people surrounding the rise of Nazi Germany and the exile of Jewish-German intellectuals to America during 1933-1945. The narrative is grounded in the work of the European Film Fund (1938-1948), the Paul Kohner Talent Agency, and the various agents of propaganda at work both in Nazi Germany and America during this time period. Through my research I hope to explicate how Jewish-German exile in America influenced not only those exiled, but also the burgeoning American film industry and how the cross-cultural intersection of media propaganda, both …

P09. Bearing Witness: Auto/Biographical Portraiture As Testimony, Gina Snooks Mar 2017

P09. Bearing Witness: Auto/Biographical Portraiture As Testimony, Gina Snooks

Western Research Forum

In this poster, I examine auto/biographical portraiture as medium through which to theorize women’s experiences of sexual trauma and the potential healing power of sharing personal experience narratives. In doing, so, I align with scholars who contend that auto/biographical photography is a performative act that provides a way to grapple with aspects of personhood that may be rooted in difficult and/or traumatic experiences (Spence 1996, Nuñez 2013, Shaughnessy 2015). I draw also on scholarship that understands shared storytelling as a valuable strategy through which to “call attention to the vulnerabilities” that some women may “endure in silence and shame” (Jones, …

P13. Wagner's Use Of The Formal Lament For King Mark In Tristan Und Isolde, Julie Anne Nord Mar 2017

P13. Wagner's Use Of The Formal Lament For King Mark In Tristan Und Isolde, Julie Anne Nord

Western Research Forum

Background: The composer Richard Wagner often expressed his distaste for “number” operas and other contrived forms used in the Italianate works of his forerunners and contemporaries. In place of these operatic conventions, Wagner drew upon the Tragedy of Ancient Greece to propose a “total artwork” (Gesamtkunstwerk)) with no contrived breaks for conventional form. Despite, or perhaps because of, his aversion toward operatic formal conventions, Wagner turned to one such form for his music for King Mark in Tristan und Isolde.

Methods: This poster demonstrates Wagner’s use of lament tropes from the poetry of Greek Tragedy and from …

P24. The Birds And The Beats: Perception Of A Beat In An Avian Model, Brendon Samuels Mar 2017

P24. The Birds And The Beats: Perception Of A Beat In An Avian Model, Brendon Samuels

Western Research Forum

Background: Beat perception is a complex cognitive skill that enables humans to “feel” the beat in music, and is an essential component of synchronization of behavior and dance. The mechanisms in the human brain that facilitate beat perception are not entirely understood, and have only been studied thus far using non-invasive techniques. Some animals, such as songbirds, also seem to be able to detect a beat in rhythms, though this has never been formally tested independent of motor synchronization.

Methods: An operant experiment is used to assess if European starlings, a type of songbird, are capable of categorizing …

P28. Canadian Jewish Women And Girls On The Homefront, 1939-1945, Jennifer Shaw Mar 2017

P28. Canadian Jewish Women And Girls On The Homefront, 1939-1945, Jennifer Shaw

Western Research Forum

Background: The following presentation explores the roles and experiences of Canadian Jewish women on the Canadian homefront during World War Two. Despite knowing much about the lives of women in this time period in general, we do not know much about the experiences of particular groups, and how they differed from the majority of women.

Methods: Using first-hand accounts gathered from Canadian Jewish women, as well as archival materials, this presentation explores the different ways Jewish women and girls participated in the war effort and experienced the war years.

Results: While acknowledging that some of their experiences …

Rewriting Histories Exhibition, Hannah Fitch Mar 2017

Rewriting Histories Exhibition, Hannah Fitch

Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)

Rewriting Histories, an international exhibition curated by Benj Gerdes and Lasse Lau, was exhibited at the Fotografisk Centre in Copenhagen, Denmark November through December 2015. Rewriting Histories draws on the singular space of the museum, itself an often complicated agent of historization, to highlight works addressing history, subjectivity, and political agency by artists working at the intersection of documentary and art. In many of the film, video and photo works, archival material is included, and thus the exhibition draws on a documentary tradition and frame of significance. By its reference to the documentary aspect, with all that it includes of …

The Gospel Of Colonization: The U.S. Colonization Of Puerto Rico As A Protestant Missionary Projec, Jorge Juan Rodriguez V Mar 2017

The Gospel Of Colonization: The U.S. Colonization Of Puerto Rico As A Protestant Missionary Projec, Jorge Juan Rodriguez V

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Symposium

One year after the Spanish-American War, representatives from nine major Protestant denominations* met in New York City to discuss the “new mission field” of Puerto Rico. While they were eager to “evangelize” these “un-churched” Puerto Ricans, Protestant leaders shared concern about “stepping on each-others toes” in this new religious marketplace. As a result, representatives established a Committee Agreement that carved the island and set parameters on where each particular denomination could evangelize and establish institutions. Presbyterians took the West, Disciples the Mid-North, Baptists parts of the island’s center, etc. Their mission was clear: “to inaugurate a work that assures the …

Monolingual Or Bilingual Approach: The Effectiveness Of Teaching Methods In Second Language Classroom, Jung Han, Kyongson Park Mar 2017

Monolingual Or Bilingual Approach: The Effectiveness Of Teaching Methods In Second Language Classroom, Jung Han, Kyongson Park

Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference

Previous studies (Slavin & Cheung, 2005; Purkarthofer & Mossakowski, 2011) have argued that bilingual instruction provides an advantage over English-only instruction in second language (SL) learning and English learners in bilingual condition feel more satisfied with the teaching method. However, there is a discrepancy between language policy and practice. This study investigates which method of the two (bilingual vs. monolingual instruction) is more effective and satisfying ELL students. Experimental research focused on the perspectives of future educators was conducted to answer this question. The participants were selected from graduate and undergraduate students who are enrolled in the college of education …

Constructing Spaces Of Queer Latinidad In Peru Through Artivism And Testimonio, Cynthia Melendez Mar 2017

Constructing Spaces Of Queer Latinidad In Peru Through Artivism And Testimonio, Cynthia Melendez

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Symposium

In this work, I look at the construction of queer space and identity in a LGBTQAI organization in Peru. This activist collective – which I call Voces Libres – is based out of the capital city of Lima and, over time, has become an important representation for LGBTQAI communities across the country. Since Peru is an incredibly diverse nation that lacks both laws to protect LGBTQ communities and education in understanding these issues at the governmental level, activists are playing a fundamental role to create spaces of knowledge and resistance to state violence. Voces Libres illustrates the intersections of this …

Society, Scientific Authority, And Linguistics: The Need For Epistemic Justification, Libby C. Chernouski Mar 2017

Society, Scientific Authority, And Linguistics: The Need For Epistemic Justification, Libby C. Chernouski

Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference

Many have considered Linguistics a science for decades, though linguists themselves have debated the accuracy of this characterization of the study of language. These conversations about linguistics as a science reveal a discipline intent on securing scientific status, often through rigorous methodology and theoretical frameworks mirroring the traditional sciences. If successful, however, linguistics inherits the authority of modern science, which maintains an epistemically hierarchical relationship with non-scientists. By examining and representing the epistemic relationships between expertise, authority, and science, I ask us to think of all linguistics not as a socially neutral endeavor, but as perpetuating the juxtaposition of scientific …

An Oral History Of Italian American Identity & Perception During The First Half Of The 20th Century, Joshua A. Hoxmeier Mar 2017

An Oral History Of Italian American Identity & Perception During The First Half Of The 20th Century, Joshua A. Hoxmeier

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

This paper will detail the experiences, perceptions, and memories of working and middle class Italian American men during the first half of the twentieth century and examine the differences between how the two World Wars and their aftermaths shaped the ethnic identity of these men. By looking at Italian American World War II veterans, I conclude the notion that Italian American inclusion was achieved through the First World War and the nationalism of the 1920s, especially the restriction of immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe, is not fully representative of both the realities and perceptions of a sizable number of …

Twenty-First Century Representations Of Albert Camus’S “L’Hôte”, Roland R. Buchta Mar 2017

Twenty-First Century Representations Of Albert Camus’S “L’Hôte”, Roland R. Buchta

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Albert Camus, an Algerian-born French writer, philosopher, and winner of the 1957 Nobel Prize in literature, had a significant impact on 20th-century world literature and philosophical thought. Even today, Camus’s essays, novels, plays, and short stories remain relevant and compelling. More recent adaptations of his work incorporate such important themes as the meaning of life and death, French colonialism and practices, and basic human rights. This presentation examines the short story L’Hôte (Eng. The Guest) (1957) from Camus’s the Exile and the Kingdom collection, as well as the graphic novel L’Hôte (2009) by Jacques Ferrandez, and the …

The Property Of Mass: An Interdisciplinary Metaphysical Investigation, Benjamin Hayworth Mar 2017

The Property Of Mass: An Interdisciplinary Metaphysical Investigation, Benjamin Hayworth

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The property of mass as used in the physical sciences is somewhat of a metaphysical conundrum. Not only has the definition of mass changed with various paradigm shifts in physics, but the powers belonging to the property have also varied. In my study, I begin by examining the historical context surrounding the term, including the changes to its definition. In doing so, it is revealed that various definitions of mass are used and circulated in general discussion, so a cogent criterion of identity is established by which each definition can be measured. After determining the distinctions between each mass term, …

Contemporary Flute Music By Argentine Composers, Erica Nightengale Mar 2017

Contemporary Flute Music By Argentine Composers, Erica Nightengale

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Aside from Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla there are very few known composers from Argentina. Both Ginastera and Piazzolla have written well-known pieces for flute; however, the known flute repertoire from Argentina is small in comparison to other countries. This is due to a number of factors including the high cost of publication in Argentina; because of this composers aren’t able to circulate their works. Pieces are discovered by word of mouth and rarely make it outside of the country. This research aims to collect and expose contemporary flute works by Argentine composers. The works collected represent a variety of …
