She's Not Allowed To Do That: Two Actors Embody Female Same-Sex Sexuality [Poster], Orion Lee Risk Apr 2019

She's Not Allowed To Do That: Two Actors Embody Female Same-Sex Sexuality [Poster], Orion Lee Risk

Research in the Capitol

The art of acting requires the authentic embodiment of another being; what happens in this process when a performance requires taking on a stigmatized sexuality? In summer 2018, an emerging theatre company in Cedar Falls, Iowa, produced Stop Kiss by Diana Son: a show that required its two female leads to embody same-sex sexuality. Guided by scholarship from Judith Butler, Jill Dolan, and Jerzy Grotowski — and following principles of practice-as-research — interviews and observation were used to explore and interpret how the actors in Stop Kiss experienced similarities and differences between their characters’ experiences and their own. Findings led …

Iii A English Ii Presentation 4: Overcoming Trauma In A Group Therapy Setting, Kate Vriesema

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

Group therapy is something that is not utilized very often in Young Adult (YA) literature. Whenever there is any type of therapy in these novels, it is almost always one-on-one, which makes sense because it is the most effect treatment for mental illness. But for a condition like PTSD, which is more intense and solitary than any other mental disorder, group therapy can be extremely beneficial in learning how to regulate emotions and how to interact and relate with others. Through the example of the Turning the Tidesprogram, I will show how I implemented my research of group therapy …

The poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" by Clement Moore has changed the perspective of St. Nicholas and Christmas. Through the analysis of the original St. Nicholas' historic background, a character comparison of the old and new St. Nicholas, and the poem, one will see how this new fantastical St. Nicholas feels more real vs. mythical and Christmas feels more magical.

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 3: An Effort To Harmonize Omniscience And Free Will, Joy Clarisse Saavedra Mar 2019

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 3: An Effort To Harmonize Omniscience And Free Will, Joy Clarisse Saavedra

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

The research in this presentation reflects an approach to finding a resolve to one issue presented by God’s omniscience. God’s omniscience raises the question of how much freedom humans have to make choices if God, who created all things, already knows (in the sense that God determines) the choices that humans have made, are making, and will make. Furthermore, if God’s omniscience determines humans’ choices then God’s omniscience is the cause for everything that happens and, thus, God’s omniscience is the cause for everything that is evil. To the issue that omniscience creates, this presentation examines the compatibilist approaches of …

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 1: What The Theology Of Hebrews Reveals About Authorship, Austin Childress Mar 2019

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 1: What The Theology Of Hebrews Reveals About Authorship, Austin Childress

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

Traditional approaches to studying the authorship of Hebrews have employed many literary methods, but they have notably excluded large-scale theological studies of the ancient book. My hope in this exercise was to survey the theological themes in Hebrews with the hope of coming to a better understanding of who the author mayhave been. The three major theological themes I noticed were Christology, Ecclesiology, and theology of Scripture; inside of each of these branches of Christian theology I found several implications that could provide a clearer understanding of who the author was. My next step was to look behind the …

Wisdom's Folly: Analyzing Fools As Agents Of Truth In Shakespeare And Dostoyevsky, Tatum Shackelford Mar 2019

Wisdom's Folly: Analyzing Fools As Agents Of Truth In Shakespeare And Dostoyevsky, Tatum Shackelford

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

As Shakespeare’s King Lear concludes, “the weight of this sad time we must obey; speak what we feel, not what we ought to say.” Although speaking emotionally seems to be the impetus for uncivil discourse, it is the dangerous “ought to say” that truly prevents constructive dialogue. Society’s oughts — to have wealth, knowledge, security — dominate characters by isolating them from each other and from the true value of human relationship. In King Lear and The Brother’s Karamazov, those who see through the pretense of “ought” and are courageous enough to voice the truth are considered fools. Characters such …

Pastors And Politics: Considerations For Missional Church Leaders Addressing Political Matters, Matthew Stinson Mar 2019

Pastors And Politics: Considerations For Missional Church Leaders Addressing Political Matters, Matthew Stinson

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

We live in a politically divided time. Long-standing questions about the political role of the church have taken on a renewed interest for American Christians who see this political divide widening and have trouble reconciling their beliefs with the platforms of either major party. How ought Church leaders, seeking to lead missional congregations, speak to our current political context?

This paper lays out a framework for political engagement by missional Church leaders. It first offers a definition of a missional church and a missional church leader. Second, it surveys some of the various approaches to Church and State relations in …

Suicide And Neoliberalism: An Imminent Critique Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Noël Ingram Mar 2019

Suicide And Neoliberalism: An Imminent Critique Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Noël Ingram

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

In her paper, “Suicide and Neoliberalism: An Imminent Critique of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy,” Noël Ingram, following the tradition of scholars such as Philip Cushman and Mark E. Button, challenges the dominant discursive framework of suicide through an examination of one of the dominant psychological therapeutic frameworks used to understand and treat suicidal ideation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Ingram argues that CBT assumes the site of disorder is situated in the atomized neoliberal subject whose failure to think and behave rationally has led to their suicide attempt. Further, Ingram discusses how the framework of CBT is influenced by inherent neoliberal assumptions with its …

‘I Hate Peer Critique!’: Building A Foundation For Effective Peer Review/Critique, Summer Clark, Lisa Spitz, Liv Cummins, Kimberly Lowe, Bill Porter, Linda A. Pursley, John Mccormick Mar 2019

‘I Hate Peer Critique!’: Building A Foundation For Effective Peer Review/Critique, Summer Clark, Lisa Spitz, Liv Cummins, Kimberly Lowe, Bill Porter, Linda A. Pursley, John Mccormick

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

When students are committed to the process, peer review can improve myriad skills; it can enhance written work (Topping, 1998, Mulder et al, 2014), improve collaborative and communication skills (Topping, 2000, Topping, 2009, Mulder et al, 2014, Nicol, 2010), and increase students’ abilities to self-evaluate (Nicol et al, 2014). Self-evaluative skills are hypothesized to contribute benefits beyond the classroom, contributing to overall career and life success (Adachi et al.; Fastre et al.; Nicol et al.).

Yet effective peer review requires a relationship of trust between the reviewer and reviewee. Students must feel their peers will treat them fairly and understand …

Connecting The Clas Reads Text To First-Year Writing Course Themes And Objectives, Sara Clark, Leah Van Vaerenewyck, Robert Wauhkonen, Alison Pasinella Mar 2019

Connecting The Clas Reads Text To First-Year Writing Course Themes And Objectives, Sara Clark, Leah Van Vaerenewyck, Robert Wauhkonen, Alison Pasinella

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

Research suggests that successful Common Read Programs (CRPs) often integrate the Common Read (CR) text into classroom syllabi across multiple disciplines (Maloy, Counihan, Dupre, Madera & Beckford, 2017). This panel aims to explore how the Lesley Community can best integrate the CLAS reads text into first year courses by sharing strategies from four Fall 2018 first-year writing courses. Given that some faculty view mandated adoption and use of a CR text as infringement on academic freedom (Benz, Comer, Juergensmeyer, & Lowry, 2013) and others struggle to make effective use of the texts in their courses, the panelists will share ideas …

Musical Artists As Entrepreneurs: Assessing Popular Artists’ Brand Partnerships, Social Media Usage, And Performance Of Identity Politics, Amara Pope Mar 2019

Musical Artists As Entrepreneurs: Assessing Popular Artists’ Brand Partnerships, Social Media Usage, And Performance Of Identity Politics, Amara Pope

FIMULAW

Today’s popular music artists have the potential power to shape hegemonic ideologies of identity categories across multiple media and industries. This position of power is unique to modern musical artists due to recent changes in the music industry’s business model and the introduction of social media. Record sales have diminished. Labels and artists have adapted in new and creative ways with a heavier reliance on brand partnerships. I wish to fill a gap in the literature that explores how brand partnerships may affect modern musical artists’ performances of identity politics through three case studies: Drake, Post Malone, and Cardi B.

See It And Believe It: Imagery For Singers, Brianna Desantis Mar 2019

See It And Believe It: Imagery For Singers, Brianna Desantis

FIMULAW

Detailed semi-structured interviews were conducted with six male and female high-level singers. This pilot study is primarily based on Nordin and Cumming’s Professional Dancers Describe Their Imagery: Where, When, What, Why, and How (2005). Some similarities and some unique differences emerged between the current study and its dance model. Interviews were based on the 4 Ws framework (Munroe, Giacobbi, Jr., Hall, & Weinberg, 2000). This involved Where, What, Why, and When singers image. Singers mainly used imagery for improving vocal technique, performance anxiety, and character development.

Modernizing Links Between Text And Music: Connecting The Sentiment Properties Of Text With Those Of Spectral Music, Jeff Lupker Mar 2019

Modernizing Links Between Text And Music: Connecting The Sentiment Properties Of Text With Those Of Spectral Music, Jeff Lupker

FIMULAW

My current research is an attempt to investigate and standardize the links between the sentiment of text and music by creating a software program which can connect these sentiment properties with those of spectral music. This is an attempt to modernize the way in which a composer writes music based on any given text by cross-referencing each word with quantitative ranking of words in terms of sentiment properties. The result will be a multimedia experience whereby the observer can listen to the sounds that are intrinsically linked the words viewed in real-time.

The Impact Of Infertility On Female Vocalist Identity, Laura Curtis Mar 2019

The Impact Of Infertility On Female Vocalist Identity, Laura Curtis

FIMULAW

This qualitative research study explores the impact on female singers’ musical and gender identities when confronted with the issue of infertility. Based on interviews with female vocalists (N=2), and reflections of my personal experiences as a singer and voice instructor experiencing infertility, this research explores the physiological, emotional, and social impact that infertility has on female singers' identities. The sensitive nature of infertility impedes open discussion regarding its impact on singers' physiological and emotional health; an issue I wished to address in this research. While each participant’s experience with infertility was unique, analysis of personal interview transcripts revealed a common …

Decolonizing National Parks: A Conversation About Repatriation And Shared Authority, Stephanie Walrath Mar 2019

Decolonizing National Parks: A Conversation About Repatriation And Shared Authority, Stephanie Walrath

Graduate Student Research Symposium

This project explores how shared authority in national parks can be reassessed through the lens of administrative repatriation. The majority of NPS interpretations focus on conservation and naturalist education, perpetuate a mythology of “gifted land,” and have neglected cultural imprints as an integral element of the land’s history. The rich histories of the peoples that have occupied these lands over time provide an opportunity for the NPS that few museums possess: to present an American history that is deeply interwoven with the natural landscape and recall events back farther than any constructed museums can possibly venture. National parks have an …
