Evaluating The Outcomes Of Social Media Marketing Alongside Traditional Promotional Techniques In Library Outreach, Liana Bayne, Caroline Hamby
Evaluating The Outcomes Of Social Media Marketing Alongside Traditional Promotional Techniques In Library Outreach, Liana Bayne, Caroline Hamby
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
James Madison University MALA (Madison Academic Library Associates) graduate assistants worked together with Special Collections and the library’s Outreach department to help market and support JMU’s First Annual Pulp Studies Symposium in Fall 2016. Social, digital, and physical ultimately came together to highlight and surface Special Collections’ extensive holdings of pulp magazines. Hashtags, archival ephemera, and everything in between melded in this multi-part exhibit. Since one of the least known and studied genre of pulps are the romance pulps, Love Story Magazine was the focus of our social media outreach project. Its florid narratives led organically to the idea of …

Investigation Of Late Roman Settlement On Dana Island, Bogsak Archaelogical Survey Project, Nicholas K. Rauh, Ayman Habib, Evan Flatt, Angus Moore, Gunder Varinlioglu
Purdue GIS Day
Purdue researchers participated in the 2019 season of the Bogsak Archaeological Survey Project in south coastal Turkey. Prof. Ayman Habib and Evan Flatt of CE used a drone to conduct LIDAR and camera mapping of the Late Roman harbor remains of Dana Island (approximately 250-800 AD). The remains, including vast quarry trenches and terraces of houses, cisterns, and churches, are covered in dense, nearly impenetrable garrigue brush, making standard architectural mapping laborious, inaccurate, and hazardous. The results of the LIDAR mapping should reveal a detailed map of obscured remains in real world coordinates, making it possible to map the remains …

Target audiences are scholars and students. The toolkit will include a database, analytic and statistical scripts, and a visualization interface. It will also include four datasets, which can be used in scholarly research and as tutorials for future users of the toolkit. The toolkit provides military historians open-source …
Spatial Distribution Of Religious Sites In China: A Web-Based Data-Rich Application Using Esri, Guojun Han
Spatial Distribution Of Religious Sites In China: A Web-Based Data-Rich Application Using Esri, Guojun Han
Purdue GIS Day
The Online Spiritual Atlas of China (OSAC), created by the Center on Religion and Chinese Society at Purdue, was constructed as a complement to the print volume, Atlas of Religion in China: Social and Geographical Contexts, by Fenggang Yang (Brill, 2018), as a way to visually demonstrate the extent and distribution of religious sites in China. OSAC is power by ArcGIS online, and some features were developed with ArcGIS JavaScript SDK. The site allows users to visualize the spatial distribution of individual religious sites in China, as well as see how provinces, prefectures, and counties compare with each other in …

Has American Exceptionalism Made The United States An Outlier On The Global Academic Stage?, Michèle V. Cloonan
Has American Exceptionalism Made The United States An Outlier On The Global Academic Stage?, Michèle V. Cloonan
Charleston Library Conference
This paper considers whether American exceptionalism has reduced the standing of the United States in the world—and whether it has impacted our ability to remain innovative. The paper is based on my presentation on a panel on this theme at the Charleston Conference 2018. The panel considered key international social issues in which Americans have become outliers, such as climate change, health care, and gun control. It also focused on research in the cultural heritage sector. Here I expand on my remarks about the origins of exceptionalism and its possible impact on libraries, archives, and museums. This issue is not …

Spanish Nominalizations And Case Assignment, Dr. Jeff Renaud, Tania Leal
Spanish Nominalizations And Case Assignment, Dr. Jeff Renaud, Tania Leal
Celebration of Learning
Nominalizations are syntactic structures wherein verbal roots co-occur with verbal and nominal properties, classifying them as verbal (VN) (El andar el niño tan tarde) or nominal (NN) (El andar errabundo del niño). While NNs mark agents genitive (del niño), VNs require nominative agents (el niño). NNs co-occur with adjectives (errabundo), whereas VNs co-occur with adverbs (tan tarde). Alexiadou et al. (2011) posit separate syntactic structures for the two. In this study, we investigate via self-paced reading task the types of case available in each structure, providing evidence of …
Die Hard: A Case Study Of Masculine Romance, Elizabeth Tretter
Die Hard: A Case Study Of Masculine Romance, Elizabeth Tretter
Scholars Week
Works of the Romance genre have long been regarded as “chick flicks” or “chick lit,” leaving scholars to question the long-standing, gendering stereotypes of romances as feminine and action/adventure works as masculine. This paper explores the connection between romances and action/adventure films by applying Northrop Frye’s six phases of romance outlined in his Anatomy of Criticism to the traditional masculine adventure film Die Hard. Not only does this application highlight strong evidence of romantic elements in Die Hard, but also, the analysis reveals a major gender disparity when it comes to feminizing the Romance genre. Why this disparity …

All Nuts And No Bolts: The Evolution Of Undergraduate Research At A Small State School, James Hawker
Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
In fall of 2017, students first started doing research with their biology instructor, and just a few terms later, two students have earned Portz Interdisciplinary Fellowships. In some ways, the program is going well with students participating in high numbers, but organizers still have questions about the “nuts and bolts” of establishing the program within the institution. Enthusiasm is high! However, key metrics are not being tracked and the workload needs to be distributed more evenly. The organizers will be talking with the audience about different ways to integrate UGR into the institution.
Design For Repair As A Strategy To Foster Sustainable User Behavior: A Case Of Undergraduate Product Design Studio, Serkan Bayraktaroglu
Design For Repair As A Strategy To Foster Sustainable User Behavior: A Case Of Undergraduate Product Design Studio, Serkan Bayraktaroglu
UBT International Conference
. In a consumerist society, increasing speed of product replacement drives unbearable sustainability problems. Manufacturing and sales-focused linear economy give insufficient concern to use phase and afterlife of products. Fewer consumers engage in the practice of repair in order to increase product longevity. On the contrary goal of a circular economy is producing less waste through increasing connections between product lifecycles, which makes product afterlife a crucial issue. In the circular design literature, modularity, material selection and disassembly properties of products are often highlighted. However, the practice of repair is often neglected in sustainable product design researches. This paper focuses …

Teaching The Principles Of Research Through The Creation Of Digital Content, Melodie H. Eichbauer
Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research
This presentation highlights the outcomes of a series of student internships that resulted in the production of successively more complex content videos for my undergraduate survey EUH 2021 Medieval European History. The production of the videos mirrored the research process and those creating the videos thought about and worked through the steps that a research project takes. Students enrolled in the course, which explores the period c.400 and c.1400 A.D., oftentimes have a difficult time with how to conceptualize the information, how to navigate the information, and how to delve into the information. The students engaged in the video product …

Inclusive Ensembles: Differentiating For The Singer On The Autism Spectrum, Natalie Wilkins
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Exceptional children belong in music classrooms. Music ensemble directors need to overcome complex challenges to meet the goal of inclusion because ensembles often contain a mixture of ages, grades, social and intellectual development stages, musical skills, and a wide variety of diverse learning needs. This study focuses on how a choral ensemble director may create an inclusive environment for students on the Autism Spectrum.
This study reviewed current research on creating inclusive rehearsal environments. Analysis revealed varied methods for differentiation including modified/adapted scores that make use of color-coding, personalized parts, and symbolic notation; choral ensemble formats, such as self-contained choirs, …

Memories Of The Great War: An Analysis Of Jackson Purchase Veterans’ Oral Histories Of Wwi, David Wallace, David Pizzo
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The First World War affected the lives of millions, creating collective memories of hardships, uncertainty, political tension, and animosity toward foreign enemies. In the United States, World War I was a turning point in the nation’s growth and development, but on a smaller scale it was a critical historical moment in the individual lives of the veterans who served. This research project will showcase the experiences of the Jackson Purchase’s WWI veterans with an emphasis on their perceptions during the war, their reasons for enlisting, the countless once-in-a-lifetime experiences they had along the way, the hardships they faced, and the …
Russian Language Use In The United States: Demographics And Implications, Julie Brock, Sadia Zoubir-Shaw
Russian Language Use In The United States: Demographics And Implications, Julie Brock, Sadia Zoubir-Shaw
Posters-at-the-Capitol
As a large nation covering 1/9 of the Earth’s surface, Russia and its language necessarily draw linguistic attention. Between the time of the Russian Revolution (1917) until now, Russian speakers (both from Russia itself and former Soviet territories) immigrated to the United States in four or five waves. Russian is currently identified as one of the world’s Critical Languages, according to the U.S. State Department. U.S. Census data indicate that Russian language spoken in respondents’ homes increased by 393% between 1980-2010, with just under a million people speaking Russian in their homes in 2011. English language use among this population …
Virtual Black Boxes: Building Theater Sets In Virtual Reality, Mark Wardecker, Bretto White, Timothy Stonesifer
Virtual Black Boxes: Building Theater Sets In Virtual Reality, Mark Wardecker, Bretto White, Timothy Stonesifer
Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference
Unlike literature or plastic arts, theatre and performance are artistic forms that demand embodiment. In a recent Latin American Theater class, we introduced students to important 20th century Latin American theatrical texts and performance art in order to consider thematic and aesthetic components relating to issues such as nation-building, violence, language, identity, gender, sexuality, immigration, and memory. Further, we considered how the works we read have been performed, and how we might stage them ourselves, concluding with staging scenes in order to bring together our theoretical studies with embodied practice and enable students to engage corporeally with works that are …

Collaborating On Machine Reading: Training Algorithms To Read Complex Collections, Carrie M. Pirmann, Brian R. King, Bhagawat Acharya, Katherine M. Faull
Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference
Interdisciplinary collaboration between two faculty members in the humanities and computer science, a research librarian, and an undergraduate student has led to remarkable results in an ongoing international DH research project that has at its core 18th century manuscripts. The corpus stems from a vast collection of archival materials held by the Moravian Church in the UK, Germany, and the US. The number of pages to be transcribed, differences in handwriting styles, paper quality, and original language pose enormous problems for the feasibility of human transcription. This presentation will review the hypothesis, process, and findings of a summer research project …

Ethics And Methods Of Human Rights Work: Exploring Both Theoretical And Practical Approaches, Shayna Plaut, Maritza Felices Luna, Christina Clark Kazak, Neil Bilotta, Lara Rosenoff Gauvin
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This workshop will explore both theoretical and practical approaches to methodologies and ethics as it relates to human rights work.
The goal of the workshop is to create a dynamic space that encourages participants to share and learn from our own experiences navigating the messiness of human rights ethics and methods. We specifically address formal education and systems and structures so that we may all design, do and teach research and practice related to human rights in a more critical and sustainable manner. We recognize the tensions of creating research, programs and advocacy that is seen as “legitimate” to educational …
Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab
Reclaiming Impact In The Age Of Awareness-Raising For Human Rights, Azadeh Pourzand, Ali Arab
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
In the last decade, the practice of awareness-raising for human rights has appeared as notably common across the board. Nevertheless, widespread awareness-raising has not necessarily always resulted in meaningful and sustainable impact. Accepting that awareness raising is not a panacea, we challenge the global collective fascination with big impact, while considering the power of small strategic impact that invests in education, and building alliances, and has the potential to last and to expand by way of gradual encroachment through contextually-defined grassroots means natural to its course.
Empowered through social media, advocates are increasingly enthusiastic about reaching massive audiences by way …
The Segregation Of Religion: How Othering Influences Society’S Narrative Understanding About The Symbiotic Relationship Among Racism, Sexism, And The Church, Ajanet Rountree
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
The social dependence on the sociology of male spiritual leadership is substantial. This dependence accomplishes two ideas: neutralizes the feminine experience and obviates the anthropological implications of religion in the perpetuation of oppression and subjugation. When considering racism and sexism in religion, specifically as they relate to the Black Christian church, a dismissal of accusations and assertions occurs by yielding to the context of the social era. This paper seeks to further clarify the position of women, who pushed against the grain of the gendered and racialized spaces of their churches and communities, as they sought to establish human rights …

Five presentations comprise this panel discussing grassroots activism in resolving intractable human rights problems. Presenters will provide case studies, theoretical framings, and practical steps to create salutogenic trajectories toward healthy societies and communities where marginalized people can realize human rights and freedoms to attain lives "they have reason to value" (cf. Amartya Sen). The Ghanaian and U.S. presenters include academic researchers, human rights practitioners, and independent artist/filmmakers.
Risking Rescue: The Politics Of Precarity In Mediterranean Crossing, Eleanor Paynter
Risking Rescue: The Politics Of Precarity In Mediterranean Crossing, Eleanor Paynter
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Over the course of Europe’s recent refugee crisis, the role of Search and Rescue (SAR) has changed dramatically, first forming a critical part of (inter)national responses to the crisis, and now occupying an antagonistic position, as countries have closed their ports to NGO-operated vessels and the European Commission (EC) has ceased naval Search and Rescue operations. As a result, migrants crossing the Central Mediterranean face different and increased risks, including dying at sea, being held by European authorities, or being apprehended closer to Libya and sent to a Libyan detention camp.
In response to these shifts, groups that continue SAR …
Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz
Firing Queer Teachers From Catholic Schools: Ethical And Theological Considerations, Ish Ruiz
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Since 2007, there have been over 90 cases of queer employees fired from Catholic institutions – many of which include dismissals of queer educators from Catholic schools. As religious institutions, Catholic schools are constitutionally protected by a ministerial exception that offers legal immunity to Catholic educational institutions that fire queer employees (which are sometimes considered “ministers” by the courts). The ministerial exception is an extension of the institution’s right to religious freedom to promote its doctrine though its schools. Although this right to discriminate is legally protected, from a moral standpoint, one may argue that the exercise of one human …
Literary Didacticism In Indigenous & Latinx Human Rights Literature, Tereza M. Szeghi
Literary Didacticism In Indigenous & Latinx Human Rights Literature, Tereza M. Szeghi
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
This presentation offers a survey of the complex strategies literary advocates for indigenous and Latinx human rights have used for successfully educating, persuading, and engaging readers. I argue that the history of human rights literature demonstrates that finding an effective balance between political persuasion and constructing an engaging piece of fiction is quite challenging, while also suggesting strategies that have been proven over time to be more effective than others.
The Strategies And Risks Of Performing Citizenship And Rights Through Music, Carolin Mueller
The Strategies And Risks Of Performing Citizenship And Rights Through Music, Carolin Mueller
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
My work explores the capacity of cultural producers to perform “insurgent citizenship,” a term theorized by James Holsten (2008) to describe how the peripheries of social organization can propel alternative modes of civic participation, through music. I utilize Engin Isin’s performative dimension of citizenship (2017) to investigate such forms of insurgent citizenship as they evolve in social and cultural peripheries of the contemporary arts and culture industry in the city of Dresden, Germany to identify the pathways they open to socio-political participation and autonomy for refugees.
While Germany understands itself as a nation of culture, cultural policy unevenly addresses the …
