The Antioquia Negra Digital Archive presents diplomatic transcriptions and partially modernized reading versions of colonial–era and nineteenth–century documents related to Africans and those of African descent in the Colombian department of Antioquia. These materials are housed within the Archivo Histórico de Antioquia (Medellín) and the Archivo Histórico Bernardo Martínez Villa (Santa Fe de Antioquia). Led by Dr. Clayton McCarl, the project involves undergraduate students from UNF as primary collaborators. The Antioquia Negra Digital Archive began in 2019 as part of a summer-session, faculty-led study abroad experience in Colombia codirected by Dr. McCarl and Dr. Constanza López Baquero. Exploring The Identity Development Of Second Generation Filipino-Americans, Melody Fordan
Exploring The Identity Development Of Second Generation Filipino-Americans, Melody Fordan
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
First-generation Filipinos come to the United States in order to start a new life, provide for their families back home, seeking to fulfill their own “American Dream”, and become U.S citizens just like all immigrants. The population of Filipino-Americans is increasing as more aspire to move to the States as many have done before. Simultaneously, cultures of both worlds blur together in one’s upbringing. Second-generation Filipino-Americans, children of at least one or both first-generation Filipino-Americans, go through leaps and hurdles in their quest of delving into their ethnic identity. One’s identity can be defined by many attributes of culture, but …

Mapping The Quixotic Imagination: Madrid In Galdos's "Misericordia", Sara Knuz-Rutigliano, Diego Salinas, Angeles Fernandez
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
The project examines Pérez Galdós’s views on social regeneration of 19th-century Spain in one of his most acclaimed novels, “Misericordia”, by documenting the wanderings through 19th-century Madrid of the main characters of the novel through geolocation tools. The novel’s main character is a quixotic and self-sacrificing beggar who does not only challenge the cartographic power and the conceptualization of space imposed by a middle class seeking to control urban growth but also reappropriates civic values that had been robbed of all meaning by Spanish society at the time. From that perspective, “Misericordia” constitutes the writer’s ultimate vindication of the narrative …

The project focuses on the personal correspondence and other documents of Eartha M. M. White (1876–1974), the founder of the Clara White Mission and a leader of Jacksonville’s African American community. Participants create, encode using TEI-XML, and edit transcriptions of the items from the collection, connecting them with White’s personal history and the African American history of Jacksonville. In Spring 2020, the project has taken the form of weekly open textual editing …
Poland's Illiberal Democracy: Ethno-Nationalism & Refugees, Evan Maslin
Poland's Illiberal Democracy: Ethno-Nationalism & Refugees, Evan Maslin
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
There are 70.8 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, cumulating in the largest international humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. The resettlement and integration of these people is a transnational challenge that must be placed at the forefront of the global policy agenda. In Poland, discursive shifts fueled by false, advantageous, political narratives are leading to an unprecedented level of violence and discrimination towards both refugee and immigrant communities. Consistent strings of xenophobic attacks resulting in physical harm or destruction have occurred across the country, thus further uncovering a pattern of deliberate acts against immigrant and refugee populations. These heinous …
The Necessity Of Divine Hiddenness, Daniel Riggins
The Necessity Of Divine Hiddenness, Daniel Riggins
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Divine silence – or how many perceive it, divine hiddenness – is the source of one of the most important and broadly discussed objections for belief in God. Dr. Michael Rea, philosophy of religion professor at the University of Notre Dame, made the claim that divine silence is one of the most important sources of doubt and spiritual distress not solely for those contemplating belief, but also for those who already believe in the existence of God. For some believers, the silence of God can be reconciled while for others it is only evidence of either a God who lacks …

This age of booming technological advancement has brought a breadth of new opportunities for understanding and documenting history, from digital mapping to database-building capabilities unrivaled in past historical efforts, opportunities which the research team behind the Red Hill Cemetery Project are utilizing in the effort to develop a virtual cemetery. The research team, in cooperation with the Okefenokee Heritage Center and the community of Waycross, seek to develop a scholarly understanding, grounded in consideration of the community and its history, of the oldest African-American cemetery in Waycross, Georgia. The physical cemetery, now overgrown and suffering from decades-long neglect and vandalism, …
Children Die, Air Pollution Continues, Zachary Kronforst
Children Die, Air Pollution Continues, Zachary Kronforst
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
The human species has evolved thanks in part to our ability to learn and solve problems, and now we as a race must solve a universal problem, air pollution. Coal, electricity, automobiles, gasoline, and nuclear power – our proud innovations – are now poisoning the air we breathe. And our children are the ones who reap the worst effects from what humanity has sown. They are the ones closest to the ground, so they consume more automobile toxins. They are the ones who breathe the fastest, faster than adults, thus resulting in consuming polluted air the quickest. They are the …
Wood-Fired Train Kiln, Ryan Greene, Trevor Dunn
Wood-Fired Train Kiln, Ryan Greene, Trevor Dunn
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
My research focused on constructing a wood-fired train kiln. I utilized ashlar fine tooled masonry techniques to create a dry-stacked formation. Primarily, I analyzed the different materials to which I had access and determined the proper steps to create an ideal structure. In order to accomplish this, I sorted, cut, and shaved various series of both insulating and dense fire bricks to create a perfect fit, an expansion joint or a level surface. If a level surface could not be attained using solely bricks then a compound termed “butter” was applied, but I utilized a high temperature refractory mortar when …
A Partial Presence Is No Presence: Public History Institutions And The Danger Of Social Media, Alex Warren
A Partial Presence Is No Presence: Public History Institutions And The Danger Of Social Media, Alex Warren
Graduate Student Research Symposium
243.6 million people use social media in the United States alone: that is roughly ¾ of the population.[1] This massive audience gives the perception that, especially for smaller public history organizations, it is a simple and effective tool to reach their audiences. But this may not be the case. Although social media provides an opportunity to put forth information to a wide public audience in a way that would otherwise be near impossible for many non-profit organizations, the reality of a successful social media presence provides potentially catastrophic results for an unprepared organization.
Effective social media use requires consideration …

The Things We Don’T See: Oppressive Mental Health Language In 1940’S East Texas, Shannon R. Groce
Undergraduate Research Conference
In the mental health files I examine, the oppressive mental health language, descriptions, and inaccurate twentieth-century perceptions of female patients will be brought to light and reexamined. It is my hope that, by doing so, the patients who suffered will be remembered, and their stories never again repeated.
Vacation Home Design, Megan Hall
Vacation Home Design, Megan Hall
Undergraduate Research Conference
A family of four requested a contemporary design for a 900 square-foot vacation home. Due to the husband’s limited mobility, the accessibility standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guided the design because the layout must accommodate a future wheelchair. The two sons requested a loft with a private bath for their sleeping quarters.
Neo-Aristotelian Criticism: An Analysis Of Senator Jeff Flake’S Address To The U.S. Senate, Caroline Chester
Neo-Aristotelian Criticism: An Analysis Of Senator Jeff Flake’S Address To The U.S. Senate, Caroline Chester
Georgia College Student Research Events
Rooted in Greco-Roman traditions of participatory government and public address, the study of rhetoric continues to frame understandings of modern political performance. Using theory developed by Aristotle and Cicero, speeches are fundamentally crafted around the principles of invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Political discourse can then be analyzed using these concepts. To that end, I use these principles to conduct a Neo-Aristotelian criticism of Senator Jeff Flake’s speech which calls for the value of humanity over that of guilt.Specifically, I use concepts contained within the area of invention to investigate the significance of presenting the speaker’s ethos (character as …
Supercavitation Capabilities On A Submarine, Adam Vu
Supercavitation Capabilities On A Submarine, Adam Vu
Georgia College Student Research Events
Submarines have shaped the way wars have been fought and have been influential in our understanding of fluid dynamics. In the past, supercavitation has been implemented to an idea that has been used to significantly increase the velocity of torpedoes in Chinese and Russian submarines. An example of this is the Russian VA-111 Shkval torpedo. The idea being that if your torpedo is expelling a gas out of the nose cone region, creating a boundary layer between the water and the torpedo, the torpedo will be facing much less resistance relative to when it was traveling in water alone. This …
The Lens Of Truth: A Critical Response To The Role Of Rinehart In Ellison's Invisible Man, Michael Cudmore
The Lens Of Truth: A Critical Response To The Role Of Rinehart In Ellison's Invisible Man, Michael Cudmore
Georgia College Student Research Events
After exploring several different critical evaluations of Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible Man, I discovered that multiple scholars paint the figure Rinehart in a positive light, believing he represents the benefits and possibility of an African-American man living in an urban environment. Other critics posited that Rinehart serves more as a representation of a lack of morality and the deception of others, but they often only mentioned this point briefly or without substantial supporting evidence. This paper aims to not only argue that Rinehart serves as a more negative figure than many scholars believe, but also to build upon the arguments …

The Relationship Between Child’s Toy Selection and Anger: Then and Now
Female expression of anger has long been stigmatized due to historically, and still presently, strict gender roles. Anger is considered a “masculine” emotion, and women have often been discouraged from crossing that gender line. In a study done by Salerno et al. (2018), undergraduate students rated the effectiveness of both male and female attorneys who presented identical closing arguments. When the closing argument was spoken in an angry tone, the male attorneys were seen as significantly more effective than the women attorneys. When the students described the attorneys after …

Mobile Application For Animal Health: A Design Research In User Interface, Sierra White
Georgia College Student Research Events
Apps function to increase productivity and allow the user to complete tasks conveniently from their mobile device. As a college student who has several pets, I have found that there is no good app on the market which caters to every pet parent’s needs, which forces them to download four or five apps. To combat this problem, FurPaws gives the user a way to document every aspect of their pet’s health and daily routine, as well as providing information on first aid and expert, real-time advice from veterinarians. The E-Vet page is available to guests who have not yet registered, …

Welcome To Gendered Dada, Morgan Drawdy
Georgia College Student Research Events
This paper explores the works of art throughout the Dada art period from three specific artists; Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, and Baroness Else Von Freytag-Loringhoven. It delves deep into the making of the pieces and the influences behind them. The pieces are analyzed through the lens of gender and gender bias that is caused by the changing of societal roles during World War One. Those roles touching on topics such as women entering the work force and the evolution and devolution of the typical masculine role throughout history. The paper is brought together to explore how these societal changes influenced …

Roots Of African American Christianity, Homer Jones
Georgia College Student Research Events
The basis of African American Christianity is influenced by African religion and the Gullah Geechee Corridor. This study is explored in a performance arts structure of choreography and dramaturgy. This is because there is a strong sense of arts presented in Africa as well as African American religion. This research is explored in Crowns by Regina Taylor. Crowns is important for this research because of the African American culture that is presented specifically at Georgia College and State University. Crowns is the first African American musical that emphasizes the idea of black culture and religion and how African religion is …
Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: Edgar Allan Poe's Use Of Concealment, Alyssa Hubbard
Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: Edgar Allan Poe's Use Of Concealment, Alyssa Hubbard
Scholars Week
In his short stories “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Black Cat,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Edgar Allan Poe uses the act and outcomes of concealment as a way to deal with guilt and introduce consequence. By examining each of these examples, we can see that how and where Poe's narrators hide the bodies of their victims directly impacts their mental health and how quickly their crimes are discovered.
Hawthorne’S Beautiful Women And Hideous Men: Ecofeminism In “The Birthmark” And “Rappaccini’S Daughter”, Olivia Shelton
Hawthorne’S Beautiful Women And Hideous Men: Ecofeminism In “The Birthmark” And “Rappaccini’S Daughter”, Olivia Shelton
Scholars Week
This paper aims to compare Georgiana and Beatrice’s beauty through an Eco-feminist lens. It examines how the men in each story set unrealistic beauty standards for women in order to be dominant. The men use science to create these standards and destroy nature or the women’s natural beauty and they kill them in the process. This paper argues that Hawthorne addresses Eco-feminist ideas within “The Birthmark” and “Rappaccini’s Daughter” through the destruction of Georgiana and Beatrice. The paper includes background information, a definition, and other key ideas involved with Ecofeminism. The paper focuses on the association of men with society …

Moral Character Development Paradigms And Practices For Adventist Educators: Phase 1-Professionals, Duane Covrig, Janet Ledesma, Stanley Patterson
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
Moral character development has long been a concern of educators. A recent resurgence of scholarship in neuro-biology and cognitive science has further energized this interest. How can this research and best practices be integrated into faith based high school and college curricular and co-curricular programming? We highlight key trends and resent discoveries and discuss promising practices, starting with professional development programs. We also offer a new paradigm of “moral health and well-being” that promises to involve the head (moral thinking), heart (emotions) and hand (behavior and actions) in this important learning process.
Poisons In Romeo And Juliet, Jenna Bauch
Poisons In Romeo And Juliet, Jenna Bauch
Research in the Capitol
Throughout this experience with dramaturgy, I plan to extensively conclude the identity of the type of poison that Romeo used to kill himself in Shakespeare’s classic play, Romeo and Juliet. I plan to do this based on four essential qualities of the poison. Due to evidence from the text, the poison must be fast acting, readily available in the 16th century, contain a high toxicity within a low amount (enough to fit inside a small vile), and water soluble. Another challenge will be determining the level of importance of each quality as it pertains to the poison. I will be …

Base & Summit: American Women's Right On Either Side Of The Passing Of The 19th Amendment, Abigail Fer
Research in the Capitol
The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 --allowing women to vote in the United States--was a watershed moment in the history of women's rights, but what were the rights of women before this important amendment? My project compares the legal rights of women across the United States from 1900 to 1920 in three key areas: wages/industry, family law & divorce rights, and property law. Because I conducted this research project for the Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Girlhood Home and Museum, this analysis gives special consideration to Midwestern states--particularly Iowa women and property rights. My project sheds light on the …

Creating an Omaha Fringe Festival
For my research project, I started a small theatre Fringe festival that consisted of ten different performances (plays) over the course of three days. Each performance group got three performances. The artists self-produced their works and the festival provided the venue, technical staff, and marketing. I recruited volunteers to help staff the box office and usher and I hired staff to run the technical side of the theatre. The festival also gave the artists 75% of the total box office. My research focused on answering the …
