Wild Apparel: A Sustainable Clothing Line, Jogvan Andreas A. Jacobsen
Wild Apparel: A Sustainable Clothing Line, Jogvan Andreas A. Jacobsen
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
The fashion industry has increasingly contributed to environmental waste through production and distrubution of crops, fibers, and garments that are dumped every day, polluting our water, soil, and air. My sustainable clothing line does the opposite, with clothes and packages built from recycled materials. With Wild Apparel, I will create casual streetware clothes with a subconcsious focus on being sustainable, contributing to bettering our earth, although not in a protesting or reprimanding way. The clothes are made from recycled plastic, driven by solar powered machines and fair wages to the employees. Wild Apparel will be working with organizations around the …
Vern Multilingual Font System, Nathan Zawadzki
Vern Multilingual Font System, Nathan Zawadzki
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
Vern is designed in Latin, Cyrillic, and Hebrew for a total of roughly 160 characters or glyphs in this writing system. Based on the research of these systems, a reverse contrast style fits Cyrillic and Hebrew, while normal contrast has more difficulty in adjusting to them. This slab serif, reverse contrast style keeps the look of a traditional serif font in Latin. Vern’s unified design across multiple languages works in media such as book text or large-scale signage.
Nietzsche’S Death Of God And The Slave-Revolt In Morality, Ryan Haarer
Nietzsche’S Death Of God And The Slave-Revolt In Morality, Ryan Haarer
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
None of Nietzsche’s theses stands out quite as much as his “Death of God” thesis. An argument can be made that the death of God is the result of the changes that the slave-revolt within morality bring about. Drawing on the observations that Nietzsche and scholars have made about the slaves and Christians, it is plausible that certain activities that the groups engaged in led to the unbelievability, or death, of God. The activities that will be given attention within this essay are the slave’s and Christian’s desire for progress and truth, which have negative and unintentional effects on other …
The Effects Of Interpreting In Mental Health Care, Sophia Holt
The Effects Of Interpreting In Mental Health Care, Sophia Holt
Celebration of Research
The therapeutic alliance greatly influences the quality of mental health care. This alliance and other aspects of treatment are significantly changed with the introduction of an interpreter into the therapeutic alliance. A literature review was conducted and written in Spanish between January 2020 and April 2020 to determine the effects of the use of interpreters in mental health care services and to make a summary of these findings available in Spanish. The 14 articles reviewed produced the themes of varying interpreter roles, the need for a working alliance between the mental health professional and interpreter, loss of various aspects of …
Costume Design For The Curious Incident Of The Dog Of The Nighttime, Rachel Smart
Costume Design For The Curious Incident Of The Dog Of The Nighttime, Rachel Smart
Celebration of Research
The following is a presentation of the ensemble costumes of Northwestern's 2019 production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime directed by Drew Schmidt. These costumes were designed and executed by Rachel Smart with execution assistance from head designer and costume shop manager Amber Huizenga.
The ensemble cast for this production contained seven actors and twenty-eight costumes in grays-cale. Therefore, careful consideration in the execution of this design was lent towards creating costume changes that were significant but simple, adding meaningful touches of color into the design, and creating accurate and appropriate costumes for UK police officers. …
Jonah And The Giant Fish: Designing For An Ensemble, Cornelia Hayes
Jonah And The Giant Fish: Designing For An Ensemble, Cornelia Hayes
Celebration of Research
Being the costume designer for Northwestern Theatre Department’s children show, Jonah and the Giant Fish, allowed for a look into ensemble design. The theatre department prides itself in being an ensemble, but designing for a show with ensemble cast, a group of actors that shares the equal responsibility of telling the story, requires a different approach in costume design. The costumes had to unify the ensemble as well portray the multiple characters that they played, requiring a vast amount of flexibility. The group of storytellers began their hour with the children by sharing and showing how theatre happens …

Bilingual Essays | Ensayos Bilingües, Emily Wikner, Diana Gonzalez, Keith Fynaardt
Celebration of Research
A language learner gains a unique experience through studying abroad. They learn to process a new culture and values in their new language, but they still carry their native language and value system in the background. Most attempts to describe the experience of living abroad only use one language with occasional words from the second language sprinkled in. However, using both languages in one essay gives a vivid understanding of what it feels like to constantly switch between two languages, creating a kairotic environment for other bilingual students studying another language to remember their own experiences of studying abroad. For …
Thank God I'M Alive And Not In Jail: A Short Story Collection, Olivia Vander Ploeg
Thank God I'M Alive And Not In Jail: A Short Story Collection, Olivia Vander Ploeg
Celebration of Research
For this project, I used my grandparents’ journals to write stories loosely based on their lives. I introduced and concluded each story in the present: in scenes drawn from interactions between my grandparents, myself, and my siblings in the last decade. In addition to retelling some of my grandparents’ stories, my aim in these stories was to explore the effects of dementia on my grandparents, specifically thinking about what happens to a story when the person who lived it has forgotten it. “The Quest for the Curlers” is about my grandma and her friends trying to fix a friend’s hair. …
Why Is Bede Interested In Kings In An Ecclesiastical History?, Abigail Ver Mulm
Why Is Bede Interested In Kings In An Ecclesiastical History?, Abigail Ver Mulm
Celebration of Research
Eusebius of Caesarea wrote a History of the Church around 300 CE; it was an account of holy persons such as bishops and martyrs, as might be expected from such a title. However, hundreds of years later, a monk and scholar named Bede writes an Ecclesiastical History of the English People, and much of his word count is spent recounting the actions of kings. This peculiar choice made by Bede was the subject of my Undergraduate Research Seminar at the University of Oxford this past fall.
Reading Cicero's Tusculan Disputations, Abigail Ver Mulm
Reading Cicero's Tusculan Disputations, Abigail Ver Mulm
Celebration of Research
Some figures in history loom so large that they become multiple people in the imagination, and Marcus Tullius Cicero is certainly one. Scholarship about Cicero has fractured his identity into multiple pieces, so that “Cicero the orator” seems a separate character from “Cicero the philosopher” or “Cicero the exile” or “Cicero the grieving father.” This is especially the case in scholarship regarding Cicero’s Tusculan Disputations. These were written late in Cicero’s life, when his rhetoric and philosophy was well developed and his grief was acute, due to the recent death of his daughter, Tullia. Thus, the complexities of the …
Noises Off Lighting Design, Maren Taylor
Noises Off Lighting Design, Maren Taylor
Celebration of Research
Designing for a theatrical production is a time-consuming process filled with research and lots of trial and error. This process was different from other shows. Because we decided to have the audience change sides instead of the set rotating, I essentially had to make two lighting plots for the grid: one for the front side and one for the backside. I also had a lot of lights on the set and made a ground plot for that. Before finalizing my design, I tested out different options on our classroom setup and using a photometircs software.
Julianne And Kristofferson Get Back Together Sound Design, Zachary Wilson
Julianne And Kristofferson Get Back Together Sound Design, Zachary Wilson
Celebration of Research
My design for this production was focused on trying to find a good balance between creating soundscapes that felt natural and using sound to compliment the bittersweet nostalgia of remembering a past relationship. The first task was largely accomplished through study of similar real-world environments to mimic, the second being accomplished through music choice.
"Coming Home": Writing Creative Nonfiction Essays, Alexis Karsjens
"Coming Home": Writing Creative Nonfiction Essays, Alexis Karsjens
Celebration of Research
“Coming Home” is a collection of creative nonfiction essays that explore what home can represent. The essays explore the importance of family and finding belonging in the midst of an ever-changing environment. The idea and reality of place is at the heart of the collection, in which I reflect on my personal experiences of growing up on a farm in Northeast Iowa. The essay “Emerald Green Beans” is a reflection on a visit to my grandmother’s home after receiving a suicidal phone call from her, and further exploring her memories of her now-vanished hometown of Eleanor, Iowa. In “When the …
Sound Design For Jonah And The Giant Fish, Wyatt Waage
Sound Design For Jonah And The Giant Fish, Wyatt Waage
Celebration of Research
In Jonah and the Giant Fish, a show produced for children ages five to ten, Jonah, a servant of God, struggles to decide if he should listen to God's call or not. Using sound we tell this violent story to kids with enough pathos so they understand the gravity of the situation but not too much that they are overwhelmed and want to leave. Using the beautiful, artistic power of sound design, the world comes to life and sparks the imaginations of children.
This was my first time designing for a show and I entered my design into the …
Cheerleading: A Reflection Of Changing Gender Norms In Sport, Jori Steenhoek
Cheerleading: A Reflection Of Changing Gender Norms In Sport, Jori Steenhoek
Celebration of Research
Today, cheerleaders are often seen as either a symbol of youthful prestige, wholesome attractiveness, peer leadership and popularity; or, they are seen as a symbol of mindless enthusiasm, shallow boosterism, objectified sexuality, and promiscuous availability. Both of these descriptions describe cheerleaders in a traditionally feminine way, which arguably is normal, as cheerleading today is seen as a feminine activity. However, this was not always the case. As collegiate sports became more and more organized and popular in the late 19th and early 20th century, cheerleading emerged. Sport during this time was, and arguably still is, seen as a …

"Cocky" Pants, Kalena Grey
KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference
This work is a narrative essay I wrote for my composition 100 class about one of the biggest aspects of my life, my Jamaican heritage. I grew up hearing my mom pronounce the color "khaki" as "cocky," and it just so happened to rub off on my vernacular in my younger years, as well as my life now as a 20-year-old. I hope this essay gives a peak into my life and find some humor in it as well as some of its cultural aspects.

Integrating Visual Arts In Every Lesson, Maddie Hommey, Karly Harwood, Kai Sizemore, Casey Mcbride
Integrating Visual Arts In Every Lesson, Maddie Hommey, Karly Harwood, Kai Sizemore, Casey Mcbride
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
In this presentation, we, as future educators, provide numerous benefits to integrating visual arts into the classroom. Our rationale challenges the arguments teachers make against doing so as the impact the arts have on education is clear. Using examples from our own lives, others, and research from well known theorists, we hope to encourage other teachers to use visual arts in their classrooms to improve students’ engagement, self-worth, motor skills, language development, academic achievement, and more.
The Importance Of Frequencies In Sound, Jace Frank
The Importance Of Frequencies In Sound, Jace Frank
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The purpose of this research is to understand instrument frequencies and how equalization plays into creating an enjoyable live sound experience. The frequencies of drums, guitars, and vocals are examined for the different sounds they produce and how to equalize them. A focus also goes into the different type of equalizers and understanding which would be the most beneficial given the instruments.

Specifically, multiliteracies provides a framework for understanding and productively using multiple modes in social studies education. Supported by a survey of literature, and an analysis of current pedagogical practices, an example of multimodal social studies curriculum will be provided.
280— Exploring The Geographic Distribution Of Childbed Fever Deaths In Mid-19th Century Rochester, Ny, Meaghan Parks
280— Exploring The Geographic Distribution Of Childbed Fever Deaths In Mid-19th Century Rochester, Ny, Meaghan Parks
GREAT Day Posters
Childbed fever, formally called puerperal fever or puerperal septicemia, is an infection typically contracted by women after childbirth. Historically, childbed fever was a serious threat to maternal health. Childbed fever is caused by exposure of open wounds or abrasions, which are common after giving birth, to group A and B Streptococcal bacteria. Ignaz Semmelweis discovered that hand washing using a chlorinated solution reduced cases of childbed fever in 1847. This project reviews the instances of death from childbed fever in Rochester, New York from 1837-1860 and later from 1907-1919 and attempts to determine which areas of the city had the …

100— Women In Labor Unions, Shannon Norton, George Macko, Jonell Maldonado, Christian French
GREAT Day Posters
This poster will discuss the activism of women during the Labor Movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. It will cover specific unions consisting of Asian and Jewish American women. We focused on issues such as improved wages and working conditions for immigrant workers, and the representation of minority groups within larger labor unions. These issues are supported by documents including newspaper clippings, photos of parades and protests, and personal letters between labor activists
