Trauma And Pastoral Care, Kelsay Parrott Apr 2021

Trauma And Pastoral Care, Kelsay Parrott

Celebration of Research

Trauma occurs on a daily basis in the life of every individual. Some of these traumas are so severe they impact the development of life and faith. Some traumas are small and barely leave a mark. According to the American Psychiatric Association, 1 in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD, not including those undiagnosed or who endure trauma without experiencing PTSD. Those who experience trauma often feel trapped in their own little worlds. The walls are tight around them, no one understands what is going on with them because there is no words to express it, and they feel …

Dramaturgy For Sweat, Karisa Meier Apr 2021

Dramaturgy For Sweat, Karisa Meier

Celebration of Research

In February 2021, the Northwestern College Theatre Department produced Lynn Nottage's Sweat, directed by Robert Hubbard and in association with NWC's Office of Intercultural Development. Dr. Hubbard chose this production to better reflect and represent the global body of Christ in response to the death of George Floyd in May 2020 and to be performed during Black History Month.

Location, place, and time are essential components of Sweat, and the setting almost serves as a character itself due to its level of importance to the narrative. With this in mind, understanding the historical context of Lynn Nottage's story …

Eurydice Dramaturgy: Relating Myth To Christian Audiences, Rachel Smart Apr 2021

Eurydice Dramaturgy: Relating Myth To Christian Audiences, Rachel Smart

Celebration of Research

As part of a Christian institution, the Northwestern College Theatre Department values the integration of faith with artistry. We believe that all truth is God’s truth and seek to produce work that glorifies Him and points others to His truth, even if that work would not be deemed distinctly “Christian.” For our audiences, however, connecting their Christian faith to the stories they saw onstage is not always an easy feat. As the production dramaturg (literary advisor and researcher) for this spring’s production of Eurydice, one of my main goals was to assist in this task. While Eurydice is inspired …

Jabberwocky: Costume Design, Sofia Schaeffer Apr 2021

Jabberwocky: Costume Design, Sofia Schaeffer

Celebration of Research

Combining Victorian fashions with Explorer-based elements, while undertaking the necessary Covid precautions created a unique and immersive theatrical experience. Since our production was puppetry based, the show was adapted into a walkthrough format in order to maintain social distancing. My job was to costume the tour guides who escorted guests to each scene in our theatre spaces. I had to make sure my costumes looked beautiful up close as well as from a distance. The main function of my costume design, however, was to set the period and mood for the audience’s journey into our nonsensical world. The costumes set …

Lighting Design - Bright Star, Maren Taylor Apr 2021

Lighting Design - Bright Star, Maren Taylor

Celebration of Research

Bright Star is about Alice Murphy, a strait-laced newspaper editor from Asheville, North Carolina. Through the story Alice reflects on her younger years as a wild and carefree Blue Ridge Mountain girl. I wanted to tell the story of secrets through an array of colors, saturate and tinted, conveying what was hidden and what was seen. In addition, I wanted to show the connectedness of the characters and their stories through texture; lighting the fringes of the scene to show that nothing is forgotten or unseen – and of course also giving a bit of visual interest to a large, …

Research Description

Campus Research Day

My physical organic chemistry research was supervised by Dr. Mitch Menzmer who studies the formation of carbocation intermediates in acid-catalyzed reactions of alkylated and non-alkylated small ring alcohols. The goal of my work was to compile data and develop methods to search for relationships between the initial structures of molecules analyzed and the wavelengths of maximum absorbance for features observed within a given spectrum. In addition, my advisor from the School of Visual Art and Design, Associate Professor Marc Boyson, contributed to this process by providing insights about the way information could be …

Riots, Public Perception And Government Response In The Civil War South, Erik Lorenz Apr 2021

Riots, Public Perception And Government Response In The Civil War South, Erik Lorenz

Campus Research Month

This presentation examines bread riots in the Confederacy and political riots in Union-occupied territory. Southern newspapers reveal the Confederacy’s need to maintain order. Northern newspaper accounts used Southern riots to depict the Confederacy as weak, and suggest that the desire to avoid appearing weak shaped the Confederacy’s response. I will demonstrate how the desire to maintain order and avoid appearing weak tempered the Confederate use of military force and ensured riots were always met with welfare measures. In contrast, the conquering government of Union-occupied cities could and did maintain order by force, ignoring rioters’ demands.

Ja Rusyn Byl (I Am Rusyn): Household Folk Music As Resistance To Oppression, Spencer Mcneill Apr 2021

Ja Rusyn Byl (I Am Rusyn): Household Folk Music As Resistance To Oppression, Spencer Mcneill

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

The Rusyns are a people indigenous to the Carpathian Mountains and its surrounding areas. Despite attempts by the Ukrainian government and surrounding nations to silently erase Rusyn culture from history, the Rusyn people have a distinct identity independent from that of any bordering nation. This unique identity is best outlined through Rusyn folk songs which depict pastoral images of the Carpathian homeland and patriotic tales of Rusyn ancestry. Much work to date has already been done documenting post Velvet Revolution revival of Rusyn culture. Because of this, I will instead focus on the lesser-known time prior and leading up to …

Effect Of Covid-19 On Elementary Students' Use Of Language Online, Emma Polen Apr 2021

Effect Of Covid-19 On Elementary Students' Use Of Language Online, Emma Polen

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in an unprecedented period of online communication among children. This paper aims to exemplify how the reliance on digital communication platforms compelled by COVID-19 affected elementary students’ use of language. Within the study, children used primarily visual language on digital sites with friends. There were two main forms of primary research in this study. The first consisted of a survey of 16 parents of elementary school children in my school district. The second was an observation of Zoom chat room activity among three eight-year-olds. Both methods of conducting research build on the existing understanding that digital …

Developing A Multimedia Interface For Electrical Biosignal Interpretation, Christopher Cox Apr 2021

Developing A Multimedia Interface For Electrical Biosignal Interpretation, Christopher Cox

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

In the last ten years, a great deal of interest has been generated around the practice of using plants’ electrical signals to create sound or music. In order to render biosignals capable of producing sound electronically, some kind of interface is necessary that converts a plant’s natural electrical signals into data that a computer can understand. Existing commercial interfaces cost at minimum $3001,2 . Worse yet, two popular off-the-shelf interfaces conform their output signals to stereotypical human notions of what a plant might “sound like”. In this project we fabricated a simple but high-performance interface for less than $5 in …

The interior design students goal was to design a new residence hall and dining facility for the SFASU campus. The design intention was to create functional spaces that allow student collaboration and motivate social interactions, while providing features that enhance student academic success and personal development.

Quantitative and qualitative data was collected by conducting surveys regarding the current housing and dining facilities on campus. Results from the current student’s surveys and from interviews of student/staff members on campus allowed the team to create the most functional plan. Researching current trends and amenities offered at campuses across the country assisted in …
