The Tragic Loyalty Of Sir Gawain, Annie Heywood
The Tragic Loyalty Of Sir Gawain, Annie Heywood
Student Research Symposium
Sir Gawain was one of the most popular figures from Arthurian legend in medieval England. His absolute loyalty to Arthur, no matter the circumstances, was greatly admired. In every story, Sir Gawain is completely loyal to Arthur, even when Arthur is in the wrong. He is willing to make any sacrifice, whether it be his life or his honor, to protect Arthur and his legacy. However, modern critics have found a darker side to his total loyalty, ideas that Kazuo Ishiguro examines in his novel The Buried Giant. Ishiguro explores the darkness that war can bring out in even the …

Student Research Symposium
On February 8th, 2022, Republican Representative Joe Harding of Florida proposed the “Parental Rights in Education Bill''. Under this Bill, classroom discussion from grades k-3rd grade will be exclusively heterosexual and will limit how much teacher’s can say in regards to the LGBTQ community in those grades. The bill states that a school “may not encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate”. Within the LGBTQ community, mental health is at a staggering low. Thoughts of guilt, self-hatred and fear lead to thoughts or acts of suicide …
Ecotourism: Experience Beyond Travel, Brooke Nielson
Ecotourism: Experience Beyond Travel, Brooke Nielson
Student Research Symposium
The growing number of tourists each year has contributed to the economic and environmental stresses of high-visitor locations across the globe. With the development of transportation such as the car and the airplane, travel has become more accessible to individuals all around the world, especially for the elite. Appropriately, one of the most dramatic statistics related to tourism is that this very second, forty-five people just arrived at their destination. And another forty-five. Then another. And it adds up even faster. Contrary to the excitement of those vacationing, there are many tensions within the local economy and environment due to …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Artemisia Tridentata, David Suisse
Antimicrobial Activity Of Artemisia Tridentata, David Suisse
Student Research Symposium
Natural medicines with antimicrobial capabilities often contain secondary metabolites from any number of plants or fungi. These plant-derived compounds can have great medicinal or agricultural value. Artemisia tridentata is said to contain antimicrobial compounds and has been used as a medicinal herb in Native American cultural medicine. Artemisia annua, a Chinese herb, was used to derive artemisinin, a common antimalarial drug and potential anticancer treatment. Very few studies exist to research the identity of any antimicrobial compounds in A. tridentata. This study is to identify any antimicrobial compounds in A. tridentata. We collected, dried, and crushed local samples of three different …
Designing For An International Audience, Sid Schaefer
Designing For An International Audience, Sid Schaefer
Student Research Symposium
Almost everything that people interact with has to be designed by someone, for someone. One of the most difficult audiences to design for is a foreign or international audience. If someone does not speak the same language as you, it is very easy for a design to fail. The most common solution to this problem is to use universal symbols or design elements that are understood by a wide variety of people. These elements of a design can draw from a few universal constants. First, a design can relate to the human body. Second, a design can relate to geometry. …
Effects Of Life-Extension Biotechnology On Global Society, David Suisse
Effects Of Life-Extension Biotechnology On Global Society, David Suisse
Student Research Symposium
For much of human history, diseases and disorders ranging from tuberculosis and the flu to cancer and Alzheimer’s have appeared inevitable and unstoppable. Yet modern medicine offers remedies to many illnesses that used to be fatal and continues to make astounding steps against other disorders that experts now understand to be treatable. In the last 10 years, scientists have made remarkable progress regarding the causes of aging itself, and current trends in technological, medical, and genetic research indicate that groundbreaking lifespan-extending and vitality-extending biotechnologies will soon be developed and may be implemented within decades. Some experts suggest that “curing” aging …

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition that is marked by differences in the brain associated with attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. There are key differences between people with ADHD and people without ADHD. These differences include brain structure, brain function, and brain development. People with ADHD have unique challenges. A personalized and strategic approach is required to manage ADHD. Modern residential interiors may work for much of the population; however, they can make life difficult for people with ADHD. A few of concepts that may have a negative impact on people with ADHD include open floor plans, multiuse …
Dynamics Of Difference: Creating A Translingual Class At Utah State University, Rebecca Elle Smith
Dynamics Of Difference: Creating A Translingual Class At Utah State University, Rebecca Elle Smith
Student Research Symposium
With social justice topics like racial inequality on the rise, some universities are creating curriculum that emphasizes how language standardization privileges some while disadvantaging others. I propose that USU should create an English class that emphasizes linguistic justice topics like the power dynamics and consequences of utilizing languages outside of English in essays and writing projects. My research project investigates what it would take to create a linguistic justice based English class at USU through the lens of translingualism. I created a mixed methods study where I analyzed translingual syllabi and interviewed lecturers in the USU English department about creating …
The Impact Of Divorce On Children Of All Ages, Mckinsey Watteyne
The Impact Of Divorce On Children Of All Ages, Mckinsey Watteyne
Student Research Symposium
Taking inspiration for the research topic from my own personal experience with my parent’s divorce, I wanted to research the effects of divorce on children of all ages and the connection to the loss of childhood innocence. Tying my research into a quilt, many people, including me, hold onto their childhood quilts well into adulthood. In child psychology, these comfort items are referred to as “transitional objects.” They are items that comfort children as they transition through different phases in life. These transitional objects offer a sense of stability and continuity. They often help children express their emotions and handle …
The Buried Giant: Unearthing The Corruption Of Organized Religion, Maryn Van Tassell
The Buried Giant: Unearthing The Corruption Of Organized Religion, Maryn Van Tassell
Student Research Symposium
The Buried Giant is a fantasy novel that has resurrected many of the characteristics of the medieval romance genre. Noble warriors and knights embark on a quest to slay a dragon and face other supernatural antagonists. In this resurrection of genre, what tropes and themes have been re-imagined or subverted for a modern audience? In this presentation, I will illustrate how Kazuo has taken traditional tropes of the medieval romance genre and manipulated them to send a new message about organized Christian religion. I will examine how Kazuo has swapped traditional character roles, called in biblical parallels, and used beautiful …

Social Media's Impact On Mental Health In Teenagers: Evaluating How Different Groups Are Affected, Maren Jacobsen
Student Research Symposium
There are patterns of discrimination and comparison on social media that contribute to minority groups and females having worse mental health. These teenagers are experiencing depressive symptoms and anxiety as well as body image issues and decreased self-worth. This project aims to evaluate which groups of teenagers have more severe mental health problems because of social media. Research was conducted using library and online databases and evaluating primary and secondary sources. I paid close attention to studies connecting mental health issues with social media use among different groups of teenagers. Through my research, I found that females, LGBTQ+ teens, teenagers …

Roman Baths And Water Gods: The Syncretic Merging Of Roman Sacrality With Celtic Religion In Britannia, Alexis Hutchinson
Roman Baths And Water Gods: The Syncretic Merging Of Roman Sacrality With Celtic Religion In Britannia, Alexis Hutchinson
Student Research Symposium
As a result of the merging of cultures and religions, the Romans left their mark on Britain, seen in many other provinces throughout Europe. One location that decidedly represents Roman influence is the Roman baths in Bath, England. Not long after the Romans arrived in Britain, they happened upon the underground hot springs, located in the modern-day city center. They settled and built a 'centre of healing and recreation, naming it Aquae Sulis.' (Bath City Council) A particular artifact of the baths, the Gorgon Head from the later first century AD,is situated at the top of a temple pediment. Often …
Why Write The Ride? Exploring Writing In The Bikepacking Community, Zackary Gregory
Why Write The Ride? Exploring Writing In The Bikepacking Community, Zackary Gregory
Student Research Symposium
While bicycle touring generally denotes multi-day trips ridden on paved routes, bikepacking emphasizes riding unpaved roads and narrow single track to out-of-the-way destinations. Bikepackers will often spend all day scrambling up and down rocky mountain trails and desert roads. Many Bikepackers recount their trips on social media, in personal journals and in publications like The Bikepacking Journal. This study investigates the relationship between writing and bikepacking, and considers what bikepackers gain by putting their experiences into words.
A Tale Of Two Textbooks: 1960s And 2020s, Taylor Wyatt
A Tale Of Two Textbooks: 1960s And 2020s, Taylor Wyatt
Student Research Symposium
Composition and Writing studies courses have changed significantly in the wake of the Dartmouth Seminar in 1966. The Dartmouth Seminar was a meeting of English and American scholars, shifting from a product orientation to teaching writing to one based on process. Textbooks are an often-forgotten aspect of composition/writing studies classrooms. This research is a mixed method approach that considers the pedagogical and wider discipline implications of two distinct textbooks used in different times: one from before the Dartmouth Seminar, Communication Skills: The Basic Course, and the second a contemporary example, Focus on Writing: What College Students Want to Know.

In Service To The Narrative: The Buried Giant Through A Folklore Lens, Vinn Mcbride
In Service To The Narrative: The Buried Giant Through A Folklore Lens, Vinn Mcbride
Student Research Symposium
Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2016 novel The Buried Giant has a history of causing contention over how it should be read. Literature, fiction, fantasy, historical fantasy, and other forms have all be the jumping off point for many analysts, but this paper argues that perhaps the best way to read this work is as an analysis of Western literary canon and violence through the lens of oral folklore. Using Axel Olrik’s Epic Laws of Folk Narrative or sagenwelt offers insights into how the novel functions as an examination of characters bound up in predestined narratives due to the nature of their original …
Say Gay, Miranda Wiener
Say Gay, Miranda Wiener
Student Research Symposium
The HB-1557 bill, deemed the 'Don't Say Gay' Bill by critics, has officially passed in the Florida Senate and will be enacted into law. The law targets discussion in the classroom towards LGBTQ issues and dynamics, eliminating these discussions all together. This bill will eliminate a potential safe space for LGBTQ students and will reinforce the idea that LGBTQ issues are a 'taboo' subject. By only eliminating LGBTQ discussions, the mental and physical health of youth apart of the LGBTQ community will decrease and students who are not apart of the LGBTQ community will lose the opportunity to create an …
Quantifying The Value Of Design, Sam Peart
Quantifying The Value Of Design, Sam Peart
Student Research Symposium
What is good graphic design really worth? It can seem so subjective, hence why most qualitatively-minded creatives struggle to communicate their value to more quantitatively-minded clients. This project seeks to determine what place quantitative numbers have within the subjective world of design and educate designers on how to leverage those numbers to their advantage.
Diversity Within Literature, Amrutha Obulasetty
Diversity Within Literature, Amrutha Obulasetty
Student Research Symposium
While our secondary classrooms grow more and more racially/ethnically diverse, common sense would tell us that our literature needs to reflect that, and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of books that include diverse racial and ethnic representation. The issue is not the lack of literature but rather the lack of exposure to students in secondary schools in the US. Through my research, I question the dichotomy between the racially and ethnically diverse literature that exists and the racially and ethnically diverse literature that is in the hands of our students. After placing published scholarship in conversation with one another, …

Reading for pleasure has countless benefits for people of all ages, including social, emotional, and intellectual growth. However, one’s love for reading does not appear spontaneously; it is something that is cultivated inside and outside of school. From being read to by parents, to including literature-based social media activities in the classroom, there are many factors that make students enjoy reading. This research explores specific factors that make people want to read and how K-12 teachers can use this knowledge to become better teachers. As the title suggests, the essence of this research is to answer the question: how can …
Why People Don't Get The Covid-19 Vaccine, Rebecca Mackey
Why People Don't Get The Covid-19 Vaccine, Rebecca Mackey
Student Research Symposium
Vaccines have been released in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the good that these can do, many people refuse to be vaccinated. This research aims to figure out why people don’t get vaccinated. Research was conducted using the library database and online articles, including polls and surveys done by various research groups. A big reason that people don’t get vaccinated is because they don’t trust the government, healthcare, or the vaccines due to their quick release. The result of this refusal is greater risk and harm to high-risk populations.

This study suggests that there is room within the English department to create opportunities for English graduate students to learn …
Little Shop Of Horrors Dramaturgy, Rachel Smart
Little Shop Of Horrors Dramaturgy, Rachel Smart
Celebration of Research
The role of a dramaturg is one of the most difficult to define in theatre. While dramaturgy is almost always a research position, the responsibilities that a dramaturg will take on will vary from production to production depending on the needs and vision of the director and crew. For this reason the artistry of a dramaturg is incredibly fluid, adjusting constantly. My role as dramaturg for Little Shop of Horrors this fall illustrated this, for I took on a variety of responsibilities some traditional to dramaturgy and others new to me: researcher, dialect coach, and front of house designer.
