Operation Mincemeat: The Impact And Influence Of Wwii’S Most Daring Intelligence Operation, Maya N. Dasilva
Operation Mincemeat: The Impact And Influence Of Wwii’S Most Daring Intelligence Operation, Maya N. Dasilva
Young Historians Conference
In 1943, during the height of the Second World War, the dead body of a man in his early thirties was released from HMS Seraph submarine off the southwest coast of Spain. This corpse carried fabricated letters outlining the Allies’ plan to attack Greece and Sardinia which convinced German forces to defend Greece and move away from the real target, Sicily. This successful, radical, and deceptive operation led by Ewen Montegue to disguise the Allied Invasion of Sicily using false-intelligence tactics forwarded the Allied victory and increased the prevalence of deception in war. This paper explores Operation Mincemeat’s revolutionary nature, …
Beyond Rudolph: The Cultural Impacts Of Reindeer Herding On The Sami, Ava A. Trueworthy
Beyond Rudolph: The Cultural Impacts Of Reindeer Herding On The Sami, Ava A. Trueworthy
Young Historians Conference
The reindeer is a quintessential symbol of the Sami, the indigenous people of Northern Scandinavia. Reindeer have always been integral to Sami culture, but they have not always had the same significance that they do now. In the 16th and 17th centuries, reindeer herding practices shifted from small-scale domestication to large-scale reindeer herding and nomadism. This paper explores the political and cultural dynamics that surrounded this shift: pressure from encroaching settler nations, dwindling resources, and a loss of traditional practices. Ultimately, this shift irrevocably impacted Sami identity. Knowledge of the historical factors surrounding the transition to reindeer nomadism is essential …
Qur’An And Constitutions: Sharia In Modern Muslim Democracies, Adrian N. Vasquez
Qur’An And Constitutions: Sharia In Modern Muslim Democracies, Adrian N. Vasquez
Young Historians Conference
In contemporary society there has seen a gradual shift in the politics of the Muslim world toward more democratic constitutions. This shift can be seen in the aftermath of successful uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt during the Arab Spring as well as isolated cases in other countries. The change echoes those that resulted from the Protestant Reformation’s challenge of the Catholic Church’s authority in 16th century European politics. By looking at the ideas of early constitutionalism in Europe that supported liberalism, it is possible to compare those with the goals of constitutions of new Muslim democracies. Though in many cases …
The Failure Of The Anabaptist Kingdom Of Münster, Sonja Cutts
The Failure Of The Anabaptist Kingdom Of Münster, Sonja Cutts
Young Historians Conference
In February 1534, after rebelling against the authority of their Catholic prince-bishop, the German town of Münster fell under Anabaptist rule. During the next sixteen months, the city’s religious leaders would advocate in favor of Münster becoming a “community of goods,” in which all goods are shared in common. However, their egalitarian dream never fully materialized. This paper examines how the hidden motives of Münster’s political leaders both helped the Anabaptist Kingdom of Münster come into being and prevented the accomplishment of its economic goals.
Bad Blood: Hemophilia And It’S Detriment To The Russian Imperial Family, Tessia A. Hoffman
Bad Blood: Hemophilia And It’S Detriment To The Russian Imperial Family, Tessia A. Hoffman
Young Historians Conference
Monarchies have often defined the flow of history. Their decisions and ideas affect whole countries, which can lead to a crisis if the ruler is unable to lead effectively. A lack of leadership can bring about war, famine, political instability, and political unrest, all of which occurred in Russia during the 19th and 20th centuries. The poor decision-making of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra brought about civic unrest that eventually led to their downfall. In addition to the unstable country, the Imperial family was also struggling with the state of their only heir, who had inherited the genetic disorder …
Paving The Way: Women In Music At Ferrara, Italy During The Late 1500s, Ella Yarris
Paving The Way: Women In Music At Ferrara, Italy During The Late 1500s, Ella Yarris
Young Historians Conference
During the late Renaissance period, musical advancement and development thrived in the courts of dukes around Italy. However, in Ferrara around 1580, a group of women began to gain unprecedented attention for their court performances and dedication to music. Interestingly, this region was also home to a prolific group of cloistered musicians. This paper explores the impact that the Ferrarese madrigal singers would have on the future of music professions for women of all social classes, as well as the relationship of court music to religious music in a time where life as a whole was becoming more secular.

Color Schemes In Department Store Brands, Annaleia Faith Altstaetter
Color Schemes In Department Store Brands, Annaleia Faith Altstaetter
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Why are color schemes important and how is it used in graphic design? Every business and brand intentionally uses colors schemes to design their visual identity. The same color can mean a variety of different things in different contexts. For example, national corporate department store chains such as Macy’s, Khol’s, Jcpenny, TjMaxx, and Nordstrom use certain color schemes to express their brand essence. In this industry, is there a consistent color scheme that communicated the essence of the brand? How do people perceptive the brands and the industry through color schemes?
To undertake this research project the following methods will …
Terrorism And The Entertainment Industry: Theater, Film, And Television In A Post-9/11 World, Grace Raber
Terrorism And The Entertainment Industry: Theater, Film, And Television In A Post-9/11 World, Grace Raber
ONU Student Research Colloquium
This paper serves to explore the division in the entertainment industry after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. New York City is considered one of the cultural hubs in America so it only makes sense that various entertainment facets reflected society after the attacks. Many TV shows and movies began to introduce a much more violent and cynical form of media which showcased the uncertainty felt in the immediate aftermath to showcase the flaws 9/11 brought up in society. This also led to the rise of psychological thrillers, a relatively new form of horror film.
However, on the other end of the …

To Park, Or Not To Park: Ohio Northern University's Parking Signage, James Joseph Meyers
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Parking is a very necessary accommodation for a good number of students, faculty, and guests on the campus of Ohio Northern University. Is finding parking on campus a challenge for students? If so, does that have anything to do with the signage presented to students?
The university offers an array of parking options for students on campus, but how effective are the signs they use to communicate who can park where? All the parking lots on campus are labeled with small white signs indicating who can park there depending on the pass they have. Colors indicate which lots are for …
For The Cry Of The Roar, Elizabeth M. Dingman
For The Cry Of The Roar, Elizabeth M. Dingman
ONU Student Research Colloquium
“For the Love of the Roar” summarizes Ohio Northern University’s athletics branding and how they present themselves to various audiences. The presence of the athletics branding even on social media platforms must communicate the brand essence of “team-orientation, ambition, pride, determination, integrity, and competitiveness” (ONU athletics Branding Guide).
Even with multiple varsity sports within ONU athletics, there needs to be consistency of how social media branding is used. It is important to communicate brand consistency in all social media platforms as branding is a critical aspect of any organization's identity and helps to distinguish an organization from its competitors.

Of Vultures, Souls, And Galen: Theology And Medical Cures In Early Medieval Europe, Christina Cannon
Of Vultures, Souls, And Galen: Theology And Medical Cures In Early Medieval Europe, Christina Cannon
Campus Research Month
Examining how medical cures in early medieval Europe reflect the theology of the time is one that involves tracing and defining the emergence of a more defined field of "medicine," beginning with Galen. The work briefly examines prevailing contemporary views of the relation of body to soul, as well as what medical cures looked like. Understanding how 'pagan' thought was conceptualized and related to 'Christian' thought during the period is also helpful, and the work seeks to broadly consider these themes while noting particular examples that answer the question of how theology and medicine were related in medieval Europe.

From Donna To Diane: Analyzing And Imitating The Art And Craft Of Suspense Fiction, Jamie Henderson
Campus Research Month
Abstract:
This study explores the art and craft of suspense fiction by analyzing foreshadowing and characterization, tracing the influence and imitation of the genre, and finally, showing the imitation of the structure and craft of a short suspense story in an original work by the author. The conclusion of the research states that, though foreshadowing and characterization are vital to the creation of suspense fiction, the most helpful tool in learning the art and craft of suspense is imitation.
Reconstructing The Confederate Widow: An Analysis Of The Wives Of Fallen Confederate Soldiers And Their Response To Reconstruction And The Post War Era, Christian Beasley
Reconstructing The Confederate Widow: An Analysis Of The Wives Of Fallen Confederate Soldiers And Their Response To Reconstruction And The Post War Era, Christian Beasley
Campus Research Month
This study provides an analysis of how the post-civil war era and Reconstruction affected the financial, social, and political lives of the wives of fallen Confederate soldiers. Because men were the head of families and traditional breadwinners in the South, the widows of the 258,000 fallen Confederate soldiers had to reintegrate themselves into society and support their families without the assistance and comfort of a husband. Although this integration may seem straightforward, these widows struggled to overcome the economic and social difficulties laid before them, including the patriarchal traditions, mourning expectations, severe droughts, and unemployment that plagued these women. This …
Invisible Yet Free: Sapphic Relationships In Late 19th Century Europe, Penelope Van Batavia
Invisible Yet Free: Sapphic Relationships In Late 19th Century Europe, Penelope Van Batavia
Student Academic Conference
Sapphic relationships, described as romantic relationships between two women, were able to proliferate without the watchful eye of society in late 19th-Century Europe due to many factors, including the lack of importance European society felt women had. While not entirely able to pronounce their relationships in public, these women were often able to operate somewhat publicly in three main types of common or “accepted” sapphic relationships. These include intimate friendships, “mother-daughter” models, and hetero-passing relationships. Since historical research on sapphic relationships before the 1970s was almost non-existent (beyond the chastising of such relationships) a number of women and queer academics …

Expanding Our Understanding Of Biophilic Design And Implications For Wellbeing In The Built Environment, Emma Franceschina
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
The Biophilic Interior Design Matrix (BID-M) was created to assist designers with identifying biophilic interior design features for optimizing nature integration for evidence-based design. The BID-M was developed and tested with interior design practitioners in the United States. There was a need to further develop the BID-M for other cultures along with understanding the designers’ perceptions of biophilia. This was translated into Mandarin and tested in China with designers. This resulted in the above publication and now we are working on a new analysis of the US and comparing it to the China results

How Does The Harry Potter Series Connect To Plato's Belief In The Immortality Of The Soul And Finitude Of The Body?, Julia Strimling
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
Plato has long been acknowledged for his significant role in the development of the Christian perspective regarding immortality. The following analysis demonstrates how Plato’s perspective on what follows death, which shaped Christian eschatology, aligns with the themes presented in the Harry Potter series. Using Plato’s Phaedo, this paper will compare Plato’s ideas about the immortality of the soul to how J. K. Rowling portrays immortality, illuminating the presence of Christian thought in the famous Harry Potter series. These connections include the beliefs that the soul survives the physical death of the body, one must nourish and protect their soul, …

“Madam” Elizabeth: Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley’S Sisyphean Attempt To Join The “Cult Of True Womanhood”, Bella Biancone
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
Nineteenth century notions of femininity and etiquette were governed by strict societal standards. “True Womanhood” was defined by four fundamental virtues– piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. However, there was another pre-requisite for joining this revered cult¬: whiteness. No matter how pious or domestic a woman of color was, she could never hope to be considered a proper lady by Victorian standards. In discerning what it meant to be a member of that “cult of True Womanhood,” Black women were used to determine the boundaries of white womanhood; a “True Woman” was to be the antithesis of the stereotypical sexual and …

“Mecca For The Colored People”: Reexamining The Demolition Of Pittsburgh’S Lower Hill District, Avishek Acharya
Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium
The Hill District of Pittsburgh is a neighborhood of national importance, having hosted jazz legends, nationally renowned newspapers, and artists. However, the Hill of today is much smaller than it has ever been; the destruction of the Lower Hill effectively separated the neighborhood from not only another part of the previously collectively one singular neighborhood but separated the neighborhood and its residents from the economic hubs in both down and uptown. The wholesale destruction of the Lower Hill District can be attributed to both the national trend of “urban renewal,” a series of misguided, often explicitly racist attempts to undo …
Twine 7: Immaculate, Ryenne Carroll

Need to Know
When writing the concept for the game, I wrote this with some form of an understanding of the Persona 5 universe, but I do hope that within the limited storytelling with the minimalistic format, I wrote the lore for this twine game in a way that needs minimal understanding of any other games.
Game Inspirations
The game was inspired by Persona 5, where I drew the inspiration of having a reflective world that ran on purifying hearts. I also drew inspiration from NieR: Automata, which lightly discussed the idea of what beauty actually means, and the lengths …
