Transubstantiation And Physics: Validity In Science Vs. Validity In Religion, Martha Stein, Emily Grace Apr 2023

Transubstantiation And Physics: Validity In Science Vs. Validity In Religion, Martha Stein, Emily Grace

Celebration of Research

Catholics believe Transubstantiation is the process of converting bread and wine into Jesus’ body and blood. There are no physical signs of change, but the substance changes. From a scientific perspective, there is no application of heat or light and no physical sign of change, therefore there is no change. Physics as we understand at an undergraduate level assumes Earth is a closed system. This assumption no longer applies if there can be substance change without physical modification from an energy source. I refuse to believe that science and religion are unrelated entities, yet I accept that this unexplainable phenomenon …

The Mud And Water: The Impact Of The Great War On A Soldier In The Trenches, Piper Williams Apr 2023

The Mud And Water: The Impact Of The Great War On A Soldier In The Trenches, Piper Williams

Celebration of Research

There is nothing clean, comforting, easy, or organized about war. Even in its temporary conclusions, the prolonged pauses between the onslaught of shellfire and monotonous marching, are found trauma and maddening unrest. Those that survive its terrors are equalized, left to relive its ceaseless barrage of indiscriminating, violent introspection; death the only true consolation.

Directly inspired by Henri Barbusses’ Le Feu, this art work explores the post-war struggle of an American soldier of the first world war; his experiences on the battlefield seeping into his daily life, consuming him, holding him captive somewhere between the tumult of the trenches …

The Progression Of Pattern Alteration, Chloe Tschetter Apr 2023

The Progression Of Pattern Alteration, Chloe Tschetter

Celebration of Research

This project explored different methods to alter patterns to create various designs in garments. It also included drafting basic bodices based on one’s measurements to create a well fitting base to start from. Alterations included pleating, style lines, and geometric patterning. All patterns were created on paper and turned into a muslin mock-up, before a final piece was created.

The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon Apr 2023

The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon

Campus Research Month

The topics of the history of music and the history of music intersect in the Civil War in fascinating ways. Both religious music and “secular” music were seen to have great power over their listeners, potentially with the power to alter the directions of lives or their salvation status. Music was used both as a mode of rebellion against the antagonizing army and ideal and a rebellion against unnecessarily violent acts. Each side used it against the other, but a select few also used it against the war itself. Soldiers marched to music, set camp to music, and fought to …

Visualizing Literary Narratives With A Graph-Centered Approach., Meg Ermer Apr 2023

Visualizing Literary Narratives With A Graph-Centered Approach., Meg Ermer

Campus Research Month

The art of storytelling is multifaceted and nonlinear, involving multiple characters, themes, and symbols while often jumping between the present and past. While media forms such as novels can encapsulate these complexities, it is often difficult to visualize a narrative in an easy-to-understand format. Our contribution is a graph-based system to let users organize and visualize those narratives. Events and characters are represented as nodes and their relationships are represented as edges. Neo4J is used as a database management system to store the graph and to run queries on it, and Streamlit and Pyvis are used to represent the database …

Masculinity, Empire, And The Boyhood Companion In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, Ruth Rempart Apr 2023

Masculinity, Empire, And The Boyhood Companion In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, Ruth Rempart

Campus Research Month

In 19th-century Britain, rigid social hierarchies and gender roles play a largely unseen role in the rise of the empire. In a society that relies upon the myths of heroic or self-sustaining masculinity to maintain the public sphere, how a “nontraditional” gentleman decides to affirm their masculinity can have a significant impact on the country’s cultural consciousness. As seen in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, young men tend to reassert their gender identities by pursuing careers that further British imperialist agendas. This paper examines the intersection between gender studies and postcolonial theory in 19th-century …

Hampton Roads' Building Resilient Communities Flood Game, Gul Ayaz, Katherine Smith, Rafael Diaz, Joshua G. Behr

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference

As rising sea levels and subsequent recurrent flooding disproportionately affects coastal areas, it is crucial to develop a heightened awareness of the impacts of natural disasters on communities and the environments they live in. The Hampton Roads’ Building Resilient Communities (BRC) Flood Game is a simulation role-playing game designed to allow players to increase their understanding of the impact of various community response interventions to sea level rise and recurrent flooding. Players will examine and assess the tradeoffs of resiliency investments, the impact policies may have on the population, and the amount of time return on investment takes. The BRC …

Digital Game-Based Approach To Math Learning For Students, Gul Ayaz, Katherine Smith Apr 2023

Digital Game-Based Approach To Math Learning For Students, Gul Ayaz, Katherine Smith

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference

Mathematics is an important subject that is pervasive across many disciplines. It is also a subject that has proven to be challenging to both teach and learn. Students face many challenges with learning math such as a lack of motivation and anxiety. To address these challenges, game-based learning has become a popular approach to stimulate students and create a more positive classroom environment. It can serve as an alternative or supplement to traditional teaching and can better engage students while developing a positive attitude toward learning. The use of games in a classroom can create a more exciting and engaging …

Political Discourse On Women Of Color, Briel Thelen Apr 2023

Political Discourse On Women Of Color, Briel Thelen

Research & Creative Achievement Day

In the last 50 years political discourse that surrounds women of color (WOC) has changed in numerous ways. There has been an at times slow and at other times fast rise in the assertion that WOC in political movements are radical and even dangerous, and that their stances threaten American democracy. However, my research will look at how the erasure of contributions and actions of WOC in the past has impacted the direct and focused dialogue of today.

Today, politicians, news outlets, political commentators, and consequently lay American citizens will critique progressive WOC in political movements as more radical than …
