Community Reads at the UW Bothell/Cascadia College Library is a program open to students, staff, and faculty across both our communities with the goal of facilitating conversation around topics of social justice and equity. We use a shared reading (a book, essay, or short story) that aligns with a greater theme as the basis of our programming, but build out from our reading in many different ways. In it's 17th year, the University of the Incarnate Word, welcome all to read and review the proceedings of the annual research week. The 2024 Excellence Summit highlighted academic excellence across all schools featuring topics from nutrition studies to soil amendments, artificial intelligence, medical case studies, and music composition studies. The rich mixture of humanities, health sciences, physical sciences, education, and business can be found in this booklet. In 1849 when Duke Saxe Meiningen created the role of the modern director in theatre he created an authoritarian model for creative power over production that would be replicated for the next one hundred and fifty years in the performing arts. This leadership model led to a performing arts industry reliant on performances being obedient and not fostering environments where creative collaboration can thrive. It created confusion between what it means to say, “yes” from a point of view of survival and not from a place of consent. Purpose Statement: Several studies have shown that aerobic exercise can have a positive impact on alleviating symptoms experienced by individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite this evidence, the potential benefits of exercise for both PD patients and their care partners (PD dyad) remain unexplored. This research project investigates the effectiveness, therapeutic collaborations, and physical outcomes of a virtual reality (VR) tandem cycling program specifically designed for PD dyads.

Methods: Following approval from the Prisma Health Institutional Review Board, individuals with PD were identified and screened by clinical neurologists. The pre-testing measures for PD dyads (N=9) included emotional and cognitive status …

Phun With Phages: Discovering Novel Bacteriophages In The Soil, Julia Kutz, Ryan Dodds, Logan Dykstra, Taylor M. Rentschler, Emma Steinhardt, Megan Vangarven, Jacie Vanderwaal, Shayler Vangelder, Byron Noordewier, Sara S. Tolsma

We used three bacterial hosts: Mycobacterium smegmatis, Microbacterium foliorum, and Gordonia terrae, to isolate novel bacteriophages from soil samples. We named these phages, created high titer lysates, and purified their DNA genomes. We have archived the high titer lysates at Northwestern College and the University of Pittsburgh. The genomes of three of our phages were sequences at the University of Pittsburgh and we will be sequencing the remaining genomes this summer. Additionally, we are planning to image our phages with transmission electron microscopy at the University of Iowa or Nebraska yet this semester.

Disney’s cultural movies have undeniably impacted the world, with films like Moana and Encanto introducing specific cultures to the global audience and receiving widespread recognition. Inspired by this influential way of cultural storytelling and noticing the lack of animated movies that represent my native country, the Philippines, I created The Last Moon as a project in ENG250LC. The creation process involved extensive researching into Philippine legends and developing those in a story and storyboard scenes. The United States is a growing multilingual and multicultural country. Although beautiful, it does present challenges in different areas of life particularly in the healthcare system as there are differences in language and/or cultural beliefs and practices. This leads to asking how cultural differences can impact how we think of healthcare. Jewish Liturgics In Christian Worship: A History Of Jewish Festal Liturgics And A Proposed Recession Of The Christian Liturgical Year Into The Larger Judeo-Christian Calendar, Josiah Troutner

Though a Judaic religion, Christianity quickly abandoned many of the ceremonial, festal, and liturgical practices of its parent religion. In this paper I argue this to be primarily due to an Augustinian reading of Torah in the Pauline epistles in which it is seen as a tyrannical force that can be distinguished into moral, ceremonial, and judicial components, only the moral of which must still be observed by Christians. In this paper, I will discuss the historical, cultural, and religious background of several Jewish holidays in advocation of their theological value for the larger Judeo-Christian community. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Paul lists several spiritual gifts observed in the Corinthian church. In this section and its literary contexts, Paul utilizes an ABA’ form to emphasize to the Corinthians the proper use of the spoken gifts, which are wisdom, knowledge, prophecy, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues as listed here. This project dives in depth into the ABA’ form present in chapters 12-14, as well as the cultural context of the Corinthian church at the time Paul wrote his letter. This Honors Thesis investigates American opposition to the German American Bund during the turbulent 1930s. It reveals the differing attitudes within American society during the German American Bund's peak. While some embraced fascist ideologies, others protested against them, highlighting the intricacy of American politics leading up to World War II. This study explores the efforts undertaken by Americans to counter the fascist doctrine of the German American Bund on democratic soil. Neurodivergent individuals encompass a broad spectrum of cognitive profiles, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, depression, anxiety and other neurological differences and learning disabilities. Over the past decade, artificial intelligence (Al) technologies have rapidly evolved, permeating various aspects of society, from healthcare to education and employment. Al often makes mistakes when analyzing papers written by neurodivergent students and flags them for plagiarism, when there is no plagiarism in the paper. This Poster presentation attempts to trace the journey of one nation of Africans into the Americas. In 1729, the Akwamu Empire, in modern day Ghana, West Africa, suffered a terrible collapse. Rival African armies enslaved thousands of Akwamu subjects and sold them to European slavers on the Gold Coast. This nation later led the biggest island wide slave revolt prior to the age of revolution in the Americas. Using primary and secondary resources such as the "Transatlantic Slave Trade Database," we will attempt to identify the European slave ships that purchased enslaved Akwamu people and trace their journey into the …

Is there an inherent bias towards male artists in the music industry? Evidence has been shown in previous studies, the most recent being from 2017, that there may be bias towards male artists appearing in Billboard Magazine s Hot 100 list. This study not only updates previous data to include 2017 through 2023, but also looks at the top 40 charts on a week-by-week bias as opposed to the year-end charts that other studies used for their data.
