Systemic Facilitation For Execution In Process-Centered Living Labs, Hannah Kang, Yong-Ki Lee
Systemic Facilitation For Execution In Process-Centered Living Labs, Hannah Kang, Yong-Ki Lee
IASDR Conference Series
Civic participatory design is widely practiced as a means of engaging communities in addressing complex public challenges (Sanders & Stappers, 2008; Wacnik, Daly, & Verma, 2024). However, a persistent gap remains between participatory ideation and actual implementation (Teal et al., 2022). This study addresses that gap by introducing a systematic facilitation framework with systemic orientation, which guides participants from exploration to execution readiness. Through a ten-session civic Living Lab designed as a real-world participatory setting involving residents, parents, and officials, focused on school route safety in South Korea, the study tested the use of intentionally sequenced facilitation tools referred to …

The Utilization Of Multimodal Interaction In Social Robots For Elderly Care: Interaction Types, System Architecture, And Purchasing Motivation, Ye Zhang, Yuqi Liu, Liang Xiao
IASDR Conference Series
The rapid acceleration of global aging demographics has elevated the integration of smart technologies to enhance the elderly’s quality of life to a critical societal priority. While existing social robots demonstrate significant potential in health monitoring and emotional companionship, their practical implementation faces substantial barriers, including steep learning curves, limited emotional responsiveness, and insufficient adaptability to heterogeneous geriatric needs. To address these challenges, this study conducts a comprehensive analysis of multimodal interaction modalities (visual, auditory, affective, tactile, electromyographic, and brain-computer interfaces) specifically tailored for older adults through literature synthesis and empirical user surveys. The results of the research and analysis …

"The Real Patient Often Wonders 'Where Is Everybody?'": A Design Ethnography Of Remote Patient Monitoring, Somayeh Ranjbar, Peter Lloyd
IASDR Conference Series
Remote patient care has become an important part of how clinicians understand and interact with their patients. Systems that deliver such care are carefully designed and monitored, but are changing the nature of the relationship between clinical practitioners and patients. They are also now being deployed with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to add a further dimension to the relationship. To explore this changing relationship, this paper reports a fieldwork study of a remote patient monitoring system recently implemented in a hospital in the Netherlands. Using an ethnographic approach over 7 months, including participant observation and semi-structured interviews with clinicians and healthcare …

The Bidirectional Relationship Between Behavioural Guidance Design And User Behaviour Habits: Implications For Sustainable Packaging, Xinyi Luo, Qiyun Deng, Qing Huang, Yunyun Wang, Jiangyong Li
IASDR Conference Series
Current sustainable food packaging often emphasises material innovation at the expense of user behaviours role across the life cycle, creating a “sustainability paradox” where environmental gains are offset by behavioural misalignment. This study employs behavioural design theory in a two-stage investigation to examine how packaging design shapes user behaviour. Field research at Xiangtan Universitys snack street identified user challenges for four food packaging categories: ready-to-eat dry food, ready-to-eat wet food, non-ready-to-eat dry food, and non-ready-to-eat wet food, and corresponding behaviours were extracted for each type of food packaging. In Stage 2, two comparative experiments (traditional packaging versus design-guided intervention) involved …

Icma Cards: Developing A Modular Toolkit For Intelligent Cockpit Scenario Design, Zhongjie Xue, Danhua Zhao, Bingquan Wang
IASDR Conference Series
With the rapid advancement of technologies such as autonomous driving, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, the intelligent cockpit has progressively evolved into a multifaceted space integrating diverse scenarios and tasks. In this context, conventional design methods and tools frequently prove inadequate for supporting concept generation and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration. This paper introduces and empirically validates a modular creative tool — the ICMA (Intelligent cockpit Mission-action) card toolkit — which organizes the early design phase through a three-dimensional modular framework comprising mission, action, and spatial layout. This framework enables design teams to systematically manage complex design elements and develop …

IASDR Conference Series
As the application of big data in design practice becomes increasingly prevalent, large-scale text-based user analysis is emerging as a critical tool for problem definition. However, there is a lack of empirical discussion on how this approach affects designers’ cognitive and emotional understanding. While previous studies have focused on outcome-oriented uses, this study analyzed the impact of providing big data-driven user information during the early stages of the design process on designers’ way of understanding users. In a workshop on “Design for Gen Z” with professional designers, participants were divided into control and experimental groups; the former received qualitative user …

Structural Optimization Of Cst-Based Design Education Models In The Context Of Generative Ai, Chunyu Liao, Chaoqun Li, Zhanrong Cao, Zhouchang Yu, Ruixin Hu, Tao Han
IASDR Conference Series
The discussion on CST-based design education essentially reflects a critical stance toward the conventional use of the CST concept. The development of CST design education emerged as a response to the long-standing limitations of computational thinking (CT), with “CT and CST-based design education” historically forming the foundation of what the academic community has defined as creativity support tools. Today, with the advent of generative AI (GenAI), the genuine realization of CST appears increasingly attainable. The shift in focus from CT to CST design education stems from the latter’s embodiment of more definitive CST characteristics. This paper contributes by tracing the …

Designing With The Unknown: A Speculative Co-Creation Workshop On Future Human-Robot Interaction In Space Station, Yu Peng, Yuanling Feng, Yu Qiao, Luo Wang
IASDR Conference Series
As public engagement becomes essential in shaping technological futures, supporting non- experts to envision complex, distant scenarios poses a critical challenge for participatory design. This study explores this issue through a co-creation workshop focused on how designers without domain knowledge conceptualize Human-Robot Interaction for a future space station. Our analysis reveals that participants relied on "experience anchoring" and narrative construction to navigate uncertainty, exhibiting a strong "affective turn" that prioritizes socio-emotional connection while "black-boxing" key technologies and simplifying systemic complexity. This research contributes a rich empirical diagnosis of this process, revealing a critical gap between non-expert visions and technical realities. …
Open-Ended Empathy: A Design Philosophy Grounded In Relation And Responsiveness, Megumi Sumi
Open-Ended Empathy: A Design Philosophy Grounded In Relation And Responsiveness, Megumi Sumi
IASDR Conference Series
This study proposes an ontological redefinition of empathy in design practice. Empathy has been conventionally framed as a cognitive means for understanding users, often through techniques such as observation and interviews. In contrast, this study reconceptualizes empathy as a mode of being that emerges within relationships—including those involving more-than-human entities such as nature and things. This reconceptualization is termed “open-ended empathy,” which is grounded in bodily and ethical responsiveness that unfolds in being-with others, opening together into mutual transformation. Grounded in phenomenology and Japanese philosophy, the study analyzes a co-design practice conducted with university students in the context of a …

Exploring The Role And Syntax Of User Scenario Elements: Toward A Structured Framework For User-Centered Engineering Specifications, Ulugbek Vahobjon Ugli Ismatullaev, Kwanmyung Kim
IASDR Conference Series
User scenarios are widely employed to communicate user research insights and design intentions through narrative descriptions of product use within specific contexts in user-centered product development. Nevertheless, their utility often diminishes when these narratives are transferred to engineering teams that require structured and measurable specifications. This paper explores which elements of scenarios persist through this transition and how they should be articulated to enhance usability in subsequent stages. To address this issue, the study examines the persistence of scenario elements during this transition and provides guidance on their phrasing to improve downstream usability. A three-phase collaborative workshop involving interdisciplinary teams …

The Algorithmic Gift Of Error: Ai Hallucination As A Catalyst For Speculative Futures And Design Methodology, Liang Xiao, Yuqi Liu, Ye Zhang, Mi Chen
IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, generative artificial intelligence has been widely adopted in design and creative practices. However, its tendency to produce “hallucinations”—outputs characterized by illogical ity, bias, or factual inaccuracy—is often regarded as a system flaw. From the perspective of speculative design, which aims not to solve problems but to destabilize assumptions, such generative disruptions can serve as potent catalysts for reimagining futures. This paper re-evaluates the creative potential of AI hallucination through the methodological lens of speculative fiction and design. It outlines three distinct hallucination mechanisms: strategic hallucination, stochastic hallucination, and systemized serendipity. These are illustrated through three case studies—In …
A Study Of Audience Behaviour And Interaction Mechanisms In Immersive Non-Gallery Exhibition Spaces: A Case Study Of Contemporary Exhibition Practice In China, Lanjie Li

Design can be a living process, evolving alongside the people it is made for and the communities that shape it. Within the study of design, researchers have often focused on the world of picture books. But they rarely see them as portals of learning, starting points to cultivate reading habits that vary across cultures and educational backgrounds. This research examines how to incorporate Japanese principles of yomikikase読み聞かせ, or reading aloud, into the ethnic context of Honduras. The aim is to adapt this common Japanese practice into educational and private environments within Honduras, to promote early literacy, comprehension, and enjoyment. This …

Sustaining Regenerative Design Through Systemic Interventions: A Case Study Of Fish Cradle Rice Paddies, Tomohide Mizuuchi, Mami Yoda, Kazutoshi Tsuda, Eduardo Feteira, Danika Van Kaathoven
IASDR Conference Series
The pursuit of sustainability in regenerative design from a systemic perspective is becoming increasingly vital. In recent years, design practices aiming to reintegrate human social systems into the dynamics of natural ecosystems have gained global attention. At the same time, systemic design approaches that identify leverage points and facilitate transitions in complex social systems are also receiving increased interest. Even if regenerative efforts are undertaken at the intersection of ecological and human production systems, the restoration of ecosystems inherently requires a long temporal horizon. Thus, regenerative design must not remain a transient activity; the sustainability of the practices themselves is …

The Internal Meaning-Making Of 'Design' By A Design Community Of Government Officials In Japan's Central Government, Haruhi Miyoshi
IASDR Conference Series
This study investigates how public officials in Japan interpret and give meaning to design approaches within the context of policy making, with a particular focus on the processes through which these approaches are taken up and translated into practice by public officials themselves. Previous studies have offered valuable insights into the introduction of design in the public sector, often in response to externally driven conditions such as institutional pressures, fiscal constraints, and innovation demands. While such work has advanced understanding of the value of design in public administration, the intrinsic dimension of design practice—central to design activity—has received limited attention. …
Design Considerations For Redefining Vehicle Cabin Comfort: A User-Centered Perspective Based On Large-Scale Text Mining, Xiangyu Zhang, Yuebin Huang, Chaomin Ma, Danhua Zhao, Chunxi Huang
Design Considerations For Redefining Vehicle Cabin Comfort: A User-Centered Perspective Based On Large-Scale Text Mining, Xiangyu Zhang, Yuebin Huang, Chaomin Ma, Danhua Zhao, Chunxi Huang
IASDR Conference Series
As vehicles transition into intelligent, electrified platforms, the automotive cabin is rapidly transforming into a “mobile third space” that blurs the boundaries between transportation, productivity, and leisure. In this evolving context, cabin comfort extends beyond physical parameters—such as temperature or seating posture—to encompass emotional well-being, interactive experiences, and aesthetic resonance. However, the design of comfort remains largely rooted in engineering-driven metrics, with limited understanding of how users perceive and articulate comfort in real-world use. To bridge this gap, we conducted a large-scale computational analysis of over 440,000 authentic user reviews from mainstream automotive platforms. Using a combination of word frequency …

Beyond Obedient Tools: A Tensional-Field Relational Ontology For Human-Ai Co-Creation, Ziming Wang, Junyi Zeng, Krity Gera, Ashley Hall
IASDR Conference Series
Design practice frequently characterises generative artificial intelligence (AI) as a compliant, tool-like extension of human intention; however, recent reports of atypical behaviours motivate a re- examination of this metaphor. Grounded in Object-Oriented Ontology, agential realism, and posthumanist theory, this paper introduces the Tensional-Field Relational Framework (TFRF) for human–AI co-creation. TFRF models collaboration as a flat network comprising five semi-opaque node classes: human designer, AI system, creative artefact, intentional vector, and socio technical environment, all linked by dynamically weighted edges and circulating flows. We operational ise this perspective as a diagnostic governance grammar: relations are instrumented as edges with quantified flows …
