An Electromechanical Synchronization Of Driving Simulator And Adaptive Driving Aide For Training Persons With Disabilities, Rufael Berhane Mar 2008

An Electromechanical Synchronization Of Driving Simulator And Adaptive Driving Aide For Training Persons With Disabilities, Rufael Berhane

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cars have become necessities of our daily life and are especially important to people with disability because they extend their range of activity and allow participation in a social life.

Sometimes driving a normal car is impossible for individuals with severe disability and they require additional driving aide. However, it is dangerous to send these individuals on the road without giving them special training on driving vehicles using an adaptive aide.

Nowadays there are a number of driving simulators that train disabled persons but none of them have joystick-enabled training that controls both steering, gas and break pedal. This necessitates …

Tumor Suppressive Effects Of The Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor And The Small Gtpase Rhob, Adam E. Carie Mar 2008

Tumor Suppressive Effects Of The Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor And The Small Gtpase Rhob, Adam E. Carie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Receptor tyrosine kinases such as ErbB2 contribute greatly to human malignant transformation, but the role that other receptors such as ß2 adrenergic receptor (B2 AR)play in cancer is ill defined. Furthermore, while some GTPases such as Ras and RhoA promote oncogenesis, RhoB has been suggested to have tumor suppressive activity. In this thesis the tumor suppressive activity of ß2 adrenergic receptors through blockade of the Ras/Raf/Mek/Erk pathway is demonstrated. Furthermore, this thesis provides strong evidence in support of a tumor suppressive activity of RhoB, but not RhoA, in delaying EbB2 mammary oncogenesis in a transgenic mouse model.

Chapter 1 describes …

Investigating The Role Of Appearance-Based Factors In Predicting Sunbathing And Tanning Salon Use, Guy Cafri Mar 2008

Investigating The Role Of Appearance-Based Factors In Predicting Sunbathing And Tanning Salon Use, Guy Cafri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the motives for sunbathing and indoor tanning is an extremely important public health issue. UV exposure via sunbathing and utilization of sun lamps and tanning beds are considered important risk factors for the development of skin cancer. Psychosocial models of UV exposure are often based on theories of health behavior, but theory from the body image field can be useful in understanding motives to UV expose as well. The current study examines models that prospectively predict sunbathing and indoor tanning behaviors using constructs and interrelationships derived from the tripartite theory of body image (Thompson et al., 1999), as well …

A Global Memory Model Of Intentional Forgetting, Melissa Lehman Mar 2008

A Modified Obesity Proneness Model In The Prediction Of Weight Status Among High School Students, Joyce E. Nickelson Mar 2008

A Modified Obesity Proneness Model In The Prediction Of Weight Status Among High School Students, Joyce E. Nickelson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The health and well-being of U.S. children is challenged by the immense crisis of obesity. The obesity proneness model, first described by Costanzo and Woody (1985), describes one mechanism by which parents influence obesity development. This model suggests that parents become concerned about their children's weight if their children show signs of becoming overweight and parents value weight highly. Parents communicate their concerns to their children and restrict their children's eating. Children internalize parents' concerns and become unable to regulate their eating. Hence, parents socialize children to be concerned about their weight but do not equip them to regulate eating, …

Dynamic Programming With Multiple Candidates And Its Applications To Sign Language And Hand Gesture Recognition, Ruiduo Yang Mar 2008

Dynamic Programming With Multiple Candidates And Its Applications To Sign Language And Hand Gesture Recognition, Ruiduo Yang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic programming has been widely used to solve various kinds of optimization problems. In this work, we show that two crucial problems in video-based sign language and gesture recognition systems can be attacked by dynamic programming with additional multiple observations. The first problem occurs at the higher (sentence) level. Movement epenthesis [1] (me), i.e., the necessary but meaningless movement between signs, can result in difficulties in modeling and scalability as the number of signs increases. The second problem occurs at the lower (feature) level. Ambiguity of hand detection and occlusion will propagate errors to the higher level. We construct a novel …
