The purpose of this thesis was to bring to light as much of the music as possible, all the performers that could be recorded, and sufficient audience reaction to indicate the musical preferences of the area in order to provide an accurate, detailed account of the early years in the Salt Lake Theatre, 1862 - 1870. There was also the desire to present these things in such a way that they would be reliable, factual, complete, and still, if possible, interesting. The purpose of this work is of course to fulfill thesis requirements, but more important to me is a desire that those who read it may gain a greater understanding of the mission in Japan. The membership of the church seems to have shared the traditional American opinion that the Far East is of little consequence in our affairs, and have given the area little attention. The first known party of white men who entered the area that became Utah included a Franciscan Friar, Silvestre Velez de Escalante. This expedition passed through the Milford Valley in the fall of 1776 and it was when they were camped at San Brigida, near or on the present site of Milford, that the important decision to turn back to Sante Fe was made.
Near the hot springs which are 15 or 20 miles farther south, Escalante recorded that the territory of the bearded Indians they had first encountered at the Sevier River extended to that point. It is not …

John Elliott Tullidge was one of a group of early musicians that exerted a considerable influence on the culture of Utah. He was a gentlemen well trained in the musical arts and intensely proud of his profession.
He was born November 5, 1807, a son of Edward and Mary Elliott Tullidge, in Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England. His parents were wealthy and realized the value of an education, and he was given the privilege of studying with the finest teachers of his day. He sang at a very early age in church choirs. As one studies the history of Cache Valley, he becomes increasingly aware of the presence of church-sponsored cooperative stores, farms, and mills, in every community in the valley. True, there are only scattered remains of a once rather extensive movement, but there is enough evidence to cause one to wonder what influence the cooperative enterprises had in the settlement of Cache Valley. An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.

Early Utah history involved many adjustments of differences between the pioneers and the Indians. This thesis is a study of the differences and of the policies adopted to alleviate them, particularly in the background, setting, and events of the Walker War.
The Mormons came into a territory inhabited by the aggressive Ute Indians. However, the niggardness of nature and the white man's oppression had reduced them to a condition of destitution. The origin of the Smoot family is traced to thirteenth century Holland when a vassal of the Count of Holland chose the name Smout. The family, after conspicuous service, entered the ranks of the nobility and gained a coat of arms. William Smoot contracted to perform fifty days service in the Colony of Virginia in 1633. Impressed by the new land, he settled in America.
His decendent and the subject of this biography was born on February 17, 1815, in Owenton Franklin County, Kentucky, to George Smoot and Ann Rowlett who named their infant son Abraham Owen Smoot after an …
