Moments Of Absorption, Sarah K. Kaufman Jan 2008

Moments Of Absorption, Sarah K. Kaufman

Theses and Dissertations

Moments of Absorption explores the conceptual and visual themes that are presented in my MFA thesis exhibition. The research looks into the absorption of the nude subject, the gestures that communicate this absorption, and the domestic space as a stage for the presentation of these gestures. This work investigates a tension between the theatrical and the natural as represented by images.

Lighting The Box,Daylighting As The Primary Organizer In Multifamily Housing, Sara Lovette Jan 2008

Lighting The Box,Daylighting As The Primary Organizer In Multifamily Housing, Sara Lovette

Theses and Dissertations

This project started out as program for multi-family housing with a need for natural light, then, it changed. Through countless studies, it became evident that what started as an animal made up of bones and tissues was really just the vessel for the animal's soul. Light is the soul of design. The program represents the tissue and bones of the animal that is design. In this project two paths were taken. The first being pragmatic, the design bound by the program. Where in the second, the concept, light, beats up the program and ultimately makes for an inspiring place to live.

Looking For Ways To Ruin A Perfectly Good Day: Masculinity In Bash: The Latter-Day Plays By Neil Labute, Daniel F. Devlin

Theses and Dissertations

Neil LaBute is one of the most prolific and challenging playwrights in America today. My thesis will explore his work bash: the latter-day plays through the frame of the performance and use of masculinity by his characters, and will create a vocabulary through which the remainder of LaBute's works can be studied, both in terms of academic scholarship and the practical application of that scholarship to the process of theatrical creation.

On Zeitgeist, James Sham Jan 2008

On Zeitgeist, James Sham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration into the possibilities and repercussions of articulating zeitgeist, that is, the spirit of our current age. The parameters and ramifications of such a project are, in this writing, analyzed in reference to the notion of historicity, and the narrative gaze that it perpetuates. The mechanism of canonization, and a discourse's capacity to be viral are examined.

Directing For The Small Professional Theatre: Directing "Nothing Sacred", Robert Hunter Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The challenges of producing and directing small professional theatre in any metropolitan area are many. This thesis is concerned with the process of finding a producing theatre, casting, rehearsal and staging the play, "Nothing Sacred" by George F. Walker, in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Unlike many thesis projects this one was conducted completely outside of the university setting and is thus a true reflection of the small professional theatre community.

Flow-Acting: Modern Sports Science And The Preparation Of Actors, Barrett Slade Billew Jan 2008

Flow-Acting: Modern Sports Science And The Preparation Of Actors, Barrett Slade Billew

Theses and Dissertations

Theatre artists and acting teachers throughout history have sought to find and create presence. By combining modern sports science with an understanding of systems of actor training I have suggested an approach that makes presence a trainable skill. My coach Dr. Scott Sonnon, developer of the Circular Strength Training System, has refined modern sports science to emphasize the development and maintenance of flow-state. This state allows the athlete to respond openly and freely within a constantly changing situation.By combining my life long study of acting with my eight years of work with Coach Sonnon I am developing a system to …

Schema, Ann Walsh Jan 2008

Schema, Ann Walsh

Theses and Dissertations

A schema is described as a diagram showing the basic outline of something, or as an organizational or conceptual pattern in the mind. It is also, in Kantian philosophy, a method that allows the understanding to apply concepts to the evidence of the senses. My Schema is a model of emergence.

“They Are Men Who Would Die By The Stars And Stripes”: The 2nd Arkansas Cavalry (Us) During The American Civil War, Brian K. Robertson Jan 2008

“They Are Men Who Would Die By The Stars And Stripes”: The 2nd Arkansas Cavalry (Us) During The American Civil War, Brian K. Robertson

Theses and Dissertations

The 2nd Arkansas Cavalry (US) was one of a handful of Federal regiments raised within the state during the Civil War. The men in the unit came from a broad geographic cross-section. Not only were there enlistments from the traditional stronghold of Arkansas Unionism, the Ozark Mountain Region, but there were also a significant number of enlistments from the Ouachita Mountains as well as the Arkansas Delta. While differing little socially or economically from their secessionist neighbors, the men in the unit nonetheless chose to maintain their loyalty to the United States government. An examination of the regiment reveals that …

Become A Name, James Steed Jan 2008

Become A Name, James Steed

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis takes the form of a memoir, exploring the possibility of finding meaning in personal narratives by applying the archetypal structure of myth and legend. Using the Quest for the Holy Grail as an analogy for the author's life, personal essays are arranged in relation to the stages of the Grail Quest, as they reflect the author's search for wholeness. Referring to Carl Jung's extensive work with the mandala as a visual symbol of the self, Emma Jung's work on the Grail Quest as an archetypal representation of human psychological growth toward a unified self, and Anthony Giddens's research …

The four research questions of the study sought factors in the segregated experience that motivated participants to attend college, helped prepare them for college, contributed to their academic persistence to college graduation, and contributed to a successful collegiate experience. Seven former teachers and 24 of the 35 identified college graduates from 1954 to the school’s closing in …

Our Story: A Collection Of Stories Told By The Sons And Daughter Of Alonzo Durward Clark And Wilma Emma Lydia Gibson Clark, Kevin L. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

I have listened to my father tell about his childhood days since I was a little boy. This collection of stories came about because I wanted to know more about what life was like for Dad and his family during their growing-up years. When Dad passed away in November of 2001, I felt a sense of urgency to get these stories on paper. I interviewed Dad's siblings, Marion Clark, Charlie Clark, and Carolyn Waldo, and these stories—told over a period of a few days back in 2001—tell the story of what life was like for the sons and daughter of …

Skilled Workers In Little Rock's Building Trades, Manufactories, And Railroads From 1871 To 1890, James Anthony Metrailer, Jr. Jan 2008

Skilled Workers In Little Rock's Building Trades, Manufactories, And Railroads From 1871 To 1890, James Anthony Metrailer, Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the character of skilled workers in Little Rock, Arkansas during the late nineteenth century. Skilled workers have not been the focus of study in any historical work on Arkansas. According to Dr. Carl Moneyhon, this class is “perhaps less known than any social group in Arkansas”. Nationwide discussion of skilled workers during this period is also limited and often fragmentary. This thesis addresses this void by comparing Little Rock's skilled workers to members of this class in other American cities, namely Atlanta and Chicago. This work describes the character of Little Rock's skilled workers through the use …

Over The Line: John Edward Lawler And Fbi, Gregory C. Hershey Jan 2008

Over The Line: John Edward Lawler And Fbi, Gregory C. Hershey

Theses and Dissertations

The FBI is the most recognized law enforcement entity in the world. During its nearly 100-year history, the Bureau has been involved in many controversies, most as a result of straying from its stated mission to investigate violations of federal law. This survey is based on personal papers of the former head of the Richmond Bureau, John Edward Lawler. Fortunately for historians, these files, many of which exist nowhere else in the agency's archives, open a window into the operational methods and investigative techniques of FBI agents. An examination of John Lawler's career provides insight into the conduct of field …

One Hundred And Fifty Percent Elasticity, Eli Mikael Kessler Jan 2008

One Hundred And Fifty Percent Elasticity, Eli Mikael Kessler

Theses and Dissertations

The sculptural environments I create immerse the viewer in a decrepit vaudevillian past. The sculptures allude to narratives within Community Theater as well as the Drag Show. Making becomes an act; manipulating materials such as synthetic hair and paint are associated with the guise of the makeup artist. Frantic rehearsal logic prevails as a dress is repurposed into a male giant's costume and window blinds are used to construct a boat's deck. This collusion asks the viewer to transgress the boundary of the stage, becoming a voyeur privileged to the world of exiled props and role reversal.

Entertainment News: Agitprop To Colbertisms, Chanelle Renee Vigue Jan 2008

Entertainment News: Agitprop To Colbertisms, Chanelle Renee Vigue

Theses and Dissertations

At the beginning of the twentieth century, newspaper theatre was born from the need to inform those who could not read the news for themselves. There have been many contributors and influential factors to the multi-faceted evolution of newspaper theatre. Contributors include Meyerhold, Piscator, Brecht, Hallie Flanagan and Arthur Arent, and Augusto Boal. Influential factors include technology, politics, and the influence of theatrical movements. The most popular and most frequent contributors to contemporary newspaper theatre are the legitimate news media and comedy news shows.

Spark Gap, Lillian Cox-Richard Jan 2008

Spark Gap, Lillian Cox-Richard

Theses and Dissertations

"Spark Gap" is an invisible electrical force made visible in spaces between things. This usually describes the space of air between two conductors; a non-conductive gap in an otherwise complete electric circuit, across which a quick luminous disruptive electrical discharge occurs. This interstitial space is the distance between two ideas, arced with a running leap. The arc can also be the difference between two things, a gap that becomes apparent only when the two are held in close proximity. In my thesis exhibition, "Spark Gap," a sea urchin shaped orb sits atop a tower of ladders. The orb is broken …

Locavore Exploring The Sustainable Table: A Restaurant In Tobacco Row, Kathryn Mia Oliver

Theses and Dissertations

Locavore is a restaurant centered around the principles of sustainable agriculture: foodthat is organically, humanely, and sustainably raised from farms and cooperatives nofurther than 150 miles from Richmond - thus the "local" in Locavore. Like all restaurants, certain programmatic requirements were standard such as providing places to store, prepare, and eat the food, and restrooms. Yet the design of the space also helps answerthe following questions: How does sustainable differ from organic? Is local necessarily better than foreign? How does a restaurant embody community?

Bounded Surface, Emilie Sayward Brown Jan 2008

Bounded Surface, Emilie Sayward Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between surface, perception, and structure has occupied my graduate studies. Locating, transforming, and transcending the surface requires play with perceptive abilities not only of vision, but of touch, hearing, and the other senses as well. How do the interactions of sense with the qualities of a surface determine our perception of the world? What role does the extension of the senses play in one's ability to perceive surface and structure? Using sense information gleaned from surfaces, the tectonics of our world are made visible. Might this relationship be played backwards as well? Composed structures produce surfaces upon which …

The Aww, Jessica Danielle Langley Jan 2008

The Aww, Jessica Danielle Langley

Theses and Dissertations

Jessica Langley's work examines animals and nature through various media and form, including watercolor and oil painting, digitally manipulated photography, both large and small scale drawing, and various combinations of each. The work has explored narrative and emotional aspects to more mystical and ecological interpretations. The current body of work settles into banal and familiar interactions with animals, or more specifically the house cat and its accoutrements. Each element of the body of work engages specific concepts that developed out of the American landscape tradition and assimilates the banal subjects into a formal framework. The subjects are monumentalized and romanticized …

Green Beans - The Neighborhood Co-Op, Cooking, And Nutritional Living Center, Amee Ricketts

Theses and Dissertations

Taking the time to learn how to eat healthfully and prepare nutritious meals has become a problem in today's modern living. 66 percent of American adults are overweight and 19 percent of American children are overweight1. This thesis strives to achieve a well designed neighborhood center that warmly invites customers to learn about the importance of nutrition and the effects our food choices have on our overall health, how to shop …

Rhythm, Grid And Collage: Building A Design Business Incubator, Robert David Smith Jan 2008

Rhythm, Grid And Collage: Building A Design Business Incubator, Robert David Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The idea of rhythm as applied to interior space is the basis for this thesis. The site is an old warehouse with a structure that contains a repetitive rhythm in the form of a columnar grid and a corresponding fenestration pattern, yet the building also has an atypical wedge shape. The program is a design business incubator, a place where design business startups, recent graduates of Virginia design programs, can begin their design careers and find their rhythm in a cooperative and supportive environment, a collage of design businesses, if you will. Rhythm is essential in our lives, from the …
