The Christian Regenhard Center for Emergency Response Studies, leveraging the expertise of its faculty, staff, Advisory Board and colleagues, has consistently programmed activities focused on high-rise fire safety. The upcoming 50^th anniversary of the film The Towering Inferno was an inspiration.

We decided this would be more lighthearted and less purely technical than many of our events. We wanted to consider both the film, and use it to reflect on the state of fire safety in tall buildings in New York City.

Of course it does not escape us that the topic of fire safety is a serious one, …

This article is a retrospective history on Newsweek magazine's December 8, 1975 cover story "Why Johnny Can't Write" by Merrill Sheils. Based on interviews with Sheils and her researcher Frederick V. Boyd, I detail the context from which this article emerged, and the role that the two employment and gender discrimination lawsuits at Newsweek in the early 1970s played in shaping this article's publication. I also examine the legacy of "Why Johnny Can't Write" within the field of writing studies.

This essay examines the career, as a singer and voice teacher, of Francisco Frontera de Valldemosa (1807-1891). Although his role as a music administrator at the service of the Spanish Royal Court, music theorist, and composer has been documented in previous studies, Frontera’s career as singer and voice instructor is less known. He learned the bel canto style directly from Rossini, whom he met in Paris, and other respected Rossinian specialists including Marco Bordogni, Antonietta, Giuseppe, and Luigi Mosca, Marianna Rossi, Domenico Vaccani, all of them Italian singers working in Barcelona and Palma. This exploratory study examines a novel pedagogical approach that integrates LLMs as required feedback tools in a university-level psychology writing assignment. The exclusive online approach emphasizes improvement through revision, requiring students to obtain AI-generated feedback on ungraded initial drafts based on an instructor-provided rubric, with final assessment focused on the quality of subsequent revisions. Contemporary artistic and literary responses to climate change frequently invoke Romantic traditions, in part because many theorists attribute our current crisis to historical developments in the Romantic period, but also as means of representing how climate change collapses the familiar orderliness of time. This essay is about the narrative forms that emerge when our place of safety is revealed to be as unstable as melting permafrost. Francisco Frontera de Valldemosa (1807-1891) published the first edition of his treatise, generally known as Equinotación, in 1837. The book purported to simplify musical notation by reducing the complex system of clefs to only three. From the moment it became public his clef method became controversial. The ten-year anniversary (!) of the CUNY Games Conference combines workshops, idea exchanges, interactive participant presentations, playtesting, and playing tabletop games into a two-day hybrid event to promote and discuss game-based learning. The conference focuses on creative pedagogy, such as playful learning activities or games, that teachers can use in the classroom every day. Day 1 featured interactive presentations by attendees, informal idea exchange sessions, and workshops by the conference organizers. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s play Neighbors, which premiered at the Public Theater in 2010, explores the history of Black representation in the theater and, subsequently, the performance of Black identity in the US through its depiction of a complex and contradictory minstrelsy that cannot easily be classified as satirical or subversive. Generating what Jacobs-Jenkins has called “wrong laughter” through contradiction, ambiguity, and ambivalence, Neighbors engages the unstable space of the comic grotesque in order to open up pathways for something new to emerge. Zitkala-Ša (Lakota: Zitkála-Šá, meaning Red Bird) was among the first to write about the experiences of Native American children in the U.S. Indian boarding school program to an English-speaking audience. As a writer and political activist, Zitkala-Ša uses emotional appeals and cultural ideas she learned through her white education to expose the very boarding school institutions that taught her. In American Indian Studies (1921), Zitkala-Ša critiques the violence that the Indian boarding school system inflicts on young Native Americans. This article analyzes Cold War historiography, addressing how interpretations have evolved regarding the historical question of whether the Soviet Union or the United States was more responsible for the breakdown in Soviet-American relations after World War II. In the years immediately after World War II, the dominant interpretation in the U.S. was that the Cold War was a result of Soviet aggression. But by the late 1950s, a revisionist school began to develop, and it blamed the Cold War on America's desire for capitalist expansion. Eventually, a post-revisionist school emerged. Post-revisionism sought a more complex picture, and refrained from blaming …

No revolutionary movement in Iranian Late Antiquity has attracted as much attention as the fascinating and enigmatic Mazdakite uprising of the late fifth century. The scholarly consensus about these has it that 1) they engaged in ibāḥat al-nisā, sharing of wives; 2) advocated the sharing of property and 3) that their past time was wine imbibing and merrymaking.
