In October of 1997 a Media and Democracy Congress was held in the Great Hall of The Cooper Union. Appearing under his nom de plume, Archie Bishop, the author delivered a revision of the Declaration of Independence which, for many years, was unavailable in printed form. Then, a few years back, Hideaki Hirano—a prominent Japanese sociologist—posted a written version in Japanese translation. Now, Academic Works will serve as the repository in which the original document will be made available to a reading and thinking public.

Knowledge And Representation In The Ambassadors: Strether's Discriminating Gaze, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

I propose a radically new reading of Lambert Strether's subjectivity in Henry James's The Ambassadors, one that challenges critical readings to date and suggests that Strether's journey reflects a tacit but very definite confrontation with the fundamental illusion of the core self. As he follows the trajectory of his desire, initially through identification with the "masculine" identity of Chad Newsome, Strether comes to see the limitations of conventional notions of masculinity. He discovers that the freedom he seeks is not to be found in the illusion of power characterized by masculine control and repression but rather in the vulnerable acceptance …

Latin American Classical Composers: A Biographical Dictionary takes an approach to the definition and meaning of Latin America that remains faithful to the variety of countries, ethnicities, and languages that constitute the notion of Latin America. The geographical scope of the book extends from Argentina to Mexico; chronologically, it includes composers from the Baroque period to the present (some of the composers who have a place in the dictionary are still in their twenties, e.g., Juan Pablo Simoniello, who was born in 1969). The Use Of Plot Surveys For The Study Of Ethnobotanical Knowledge: A Brunei Dusun Example, Jay H. Bernstein, Roy Ellen, Bantong Bin Antaran

This paper describes a technique for using plot surveys to measure individual informants' ethnobotanical knowledge of forests, as applied to the Dusun community of Merimbun in Brunei. Two knowledgeable but non-literate Dusun informants enumerated marked plots of both recent and old secondary growth mixed dipterocarp forest near the village. They were able to provide names (other than life-forms or the most general basic and intermediate categories) for 86-97% of species growing in the plots. Libraries and librarians have a long history of fighting censorship and attempts to remove materials from their collections, but what about materials that are not only offensive but also historically inaccurate? There are three aspects to the topic of Holocaust-denial materials in libraries: Should libraries acquire it? If they do, how should it be classified? Where should it be shelved?

Word Into Idea: The Four-Column Association And The Placket, Stephen W. Fried

Two aleatory exercises in experimental poetry and prose for face-to-face classrooms are described step-by-step, In the first, a round-robin of word associations provides a lexicon from which first a poem and then a prose piece are generated and optionally shared. In the second, participants compile lists of rhyming words that are transferred to templates that position the rhyming words among blanks to be filled in. The sequence generates first a four-line poem from two triple rhymes, then a six-line poem from three triple rhymes and finally a ten-line poem from five quintuple rhymes. Results are shared on a voluntary basis.

As World War I came to an end, the borders in Central and Eastern Europe were tenuous, and in some cases non-existent, and several countries came into territorial conflict. The battle between Poland and the Soviet Union was a pivotal event in twentieth century history, as Poland not only dealt the Red Army its first defeat, but also greatly expanded the territory of the fledgling Polish Republic to its historic, pre-partition borders.

This paper concerns epistemological rationalism and the norms used by governments to instruct their officers to perform their duties. The particular duty I discuss here is preparation of and action on the budget. In this paper I use "rationalism" as the opposite of "empiricism." This rationalism does not refer to "'economic rationality," it refers to the method of attaining knowledge associated with introspection, logic, and a priori knowledge. It is opposed to the method of attaining knowledge associated with observation, experiment, and evidence. By "norms, “normative," and other related terms, I mean action guiding language. Mark Weber, who at the time was both the editor of the Journal of Historical Review and the Director of the Institute for Historical Review, wrote a letter to the editor of Public & Access Services Quarterly objecting to a 1995 article written by John Drobnicki, Carol Goldman, Trina Knight, and Johanna Thomas ("Holocaust-Denial Literature in Public Libraries: An Investigation of Public Librarians’ Attitudes Regarding Acquisition and Access"). Drobnicki wrote a detailed response, which not only refutes the claims of Mr. Weber, but which also demonstrates how Holocaust "revisionists" often make claims which do not hold up.

In the Western Apache discourse community, landscape is not just the realm of nature in its sheer physicality. Neither are places in the landscape to be read as metaphors. Rather, places, visual things by reason of their identification with aspects of social hierarchy are literally giving moral messages, are imploring people to live right. The Wade-Giles system is used for the transliteration of Chinese materials. English publications that include Chinese characters transliterated by the author have those transliterations retained in the bibliographical annotations.Certain materials may have been omitted because the author is unaware of their existence or availability here in the United States.A great portion of the Chinese-language publications was found in the collection of Columbia University's C V Starr East Asian Library.
