Al cumplirse diez años de la aparición de La piel muerta (2005) la primera novela de David Miklos (San Antonio, 1970), el trayecto de este autor confirma la relevante irrupción de sus primeras páginas. Estamos ante una obra minimalista cuya exploración intelectual de la memoria, la dislocación autobiográfica y los registros simbólicos que interrogan aspectos urgentes del presente histórico mexicano han posicionado a Miklos como uno de los más singulares autores de la narrativa mexicana reciente. Butterfly Redreaming: Rethinking Free, With Zhuangzi Flying Westerly With Descartes, Lacan, Waldman…, Kyoo Lee

Usually, Zhuangzi’s parable of “the butterfly dream/dreaming butterfly” is read as an enigmatic version, from “the East”, of the Cartesian skeptical challenges to “objective reality” or else the Lacanian psycho-drama of the “pure gaze” in which “he”, Zhuangzi, “is a butterfly for nobody”, who stands for “the Real”. Retooling some of the critical insights from these standard dialectical or anxiogenic approaches to this allegorical puzzle of self-identity, both of which, however, tend to leave unquestioned or else structurally overrate the binarized inner-exclusivity of typical pairs such as in/out, subject/object, illusion/reality, and all/nothing, this article proposes a relatively novel, fluid model …

This article deals with such topics as the protectory's establishment, operation and management, education and industrial training, as well as societal factors leading to its changing mission and closing in the Bronx in 1938-- after serving the needs of over 140,000 boys and girls.

“My Brain Database Doesn’T See Skin Color” Color-Blind Racism In The Technology Industry And In Theorizing The Web, Jessie Daniels

In this article, I examine three interconnected notions about color-blind racism and the Internet. The first is the fantasy that the Internet as a technology is color-blind with regard to race; the second is the reality that color-blind racism operates in the tech industry. The third notion is the way color-blind racism shapes Internet studies of race and racism, in which race is contained as a “variable” or as an “identity” that inhere exclusively in people of color, but that leaves the way race is embedded in structures, industry, and the very idea of the Internet unexamined. Gladys Jarrett was the first Library faculty member hired at York College, and was one of the original three librarians when the college opened. Her career at York spanned 1967-1985, and she was very likely the first African-American woman to be a Chief Librarian in the City University of New York system.

This essay will outline the digital collections of the Lesbian Herstory Archives with an emphasis on process and workflow. The paragraphs below will describe the efforts put forth by the all- volunteer collective, and their dedication toward making materials accessible through the use of digital technology to preserve, catalog, and exhibit lesbian herstory. Interviews with Archive Coordinators, called “Archivettes”, Rachel Corbman on the Online Public Access Catalog, Saskia Scheffer on Photos, and Maxine Wolfe on Audio, will provide examples of LHA digital practices in the creation and maintenance of the Photo Collection, OPAC, and Audio Tape Digitization projects. Chinese Americans searched for their identities and strove for achievement in the United States. Respect for the elders is considered as one of the outstanding virtues of Chinese culture. The importance of this trait is underscored via its record-keeping traditions and clan genealogies called Jiapu which was fostered by centuries of Confucian philosophy. Some of the history of Chinese in America can in fact be found not only in China but also internationally around the globe. At first a part of the colonial system as an encomendero, he later dedicated his life to the struggle for justice and human rights of the indigenous peoples of America. At the grand debate of 1551 between Dr. Sepulveda and Las Casas, Las Casas presented a very modern view of human rights that is one of the useful models of human rights for the contemporary world.

Pound and disability: the two keywords of my title are not happy bedfellows. Why then insist on their conjunction? My answer is that neither Pound studies, on its own, nor a Pound-free disability studies can offer a history of American twentieth-century poetry that is both sensitive to changes in a literary tradition and changes in attitudes towards disability.

In the erotics of theater, words are (theoretically) corporeal. They are up there for public scrutiny. The mind's eye echoes the mind's ear. Words act. They are elements of the: scenic investiture affecting, synesthetically, light space rhythm pattern sound, but they also resound at the deepest level of the: mise-en-scene, through self time memory consciousness as well. Mere words, true. Problematic to the last breath of being. The: material elements of theater - like the: body itself - situate us.

Insensate Oysters And Our Nonconsensual Existence, Karl Steel

From the classical era through to the French Enlightenment, oysters were considered the hingepoint between plants and animals. Unable to move, possessing only the sense of sense itself, they were the very figure of bare life. Rather than claiming that oysters should be granted "agency," as the new materialist habit would be, I argue that humans should instead "oystermorphize" themselves, to recognize that our agency is not the dominant condition of our being.

Developing Media Literacy: Managing Fear And Moving Beyond, Katherine Fry

One way to view the development of the media literacy movement is through the various different ways in which strains of media literacy education have been called on to allay fears that accompanying new media technologies. This article focuses on how one media literacy organization, The LAMP, deals with two very different arenas —the internet safety arena and the news literacy arena-where fear of digital media has created narrow pockets of concern seeking narrow solutions. As media literacy grows and develops the hope is that these fears subside, a perception of separateness dissolves, and a broader media literacy vision advances.

This essay discusses the portrayal and usage of Buddhist themes in the classic era Doctor Who television series (1963-1996). Here we map out specific influences of Buddhism on the construction of Doctor Who’s characters, illustrating how popular culture participates in the religious dialogue contained within everyday life. We will argue that an interpretive lens informed by an understanding of the interplay of different religious and philosophical influences contributes to a more productive conversation about the nature of the Doctor. This hybrid piece, combining scholarly inquiry in several disciplines (from bilingualism and literary theory to visual art, cultural anthropology, and psychoanalysis) with the genre of personal essay, explores the concept of multilingual identity and creativity in visual art. Establishing the parallel with the phenomenon of 'literary translingualism' and exemplifying most salient identity features of several translingual writers, I coin the concept of 'artistic translingualism.' The essay is focused on multilingual life and art of an immigrant artist, Marc Chagall, and analyzes his several paintings within the framework of three translingual constructs: duality, ambivalence, and liminality. Biographers of Catharine Macaulay (1731–91), much like her contemporaries, often agreed that the woman’s reputation was shaped by the peculiar company she kept: prominent, intellectual, political, radical, revolutionary, and occasion- ally “foolish.”3 This essay examines why it matters what company a writer keeps, especially when that writer is a woman and her reputation is tied to the status of her letters and her correspondents.
