Idiomatic Horn Writing: The Formal And Historical Contexts Of Four Horn Pieces, Elizabeth A. Danner
Idiomatic Horn Writing: The Formal And Historical Contexts Of Four Horn Pieces, Elizabeth A. Danner
Masters Theses
As performers on the modern horn, we are presented with literature that was written for an instrument that differs from the one we use today. The fact that much of our solo literature was written for the natural horn does not invalidate our performances of it on the modern double horn. However, in order to present the music correctly, we must be aware of the development of the horn and historical context. In this document, I explore four pieces from different points in horn history. I assert the reasons each composer wrote the way he did by considering the physical …
Female Identity And Experience In Abc's Lost, Jennifer L. Reichart
Female Identity And Experience In Abc's Lost, Jennifer L. Reichart
Masters Theses
This thesis is an analysis of the female characters and their roles as mothers, daughters, and lovers in the television series LOST (ABC, 2004-2010). During its original runtime, the series presented intriguing yet complex women whose personal experiences were revealed in flashbacks. With the move from these flashbacks to flashforwards and flashsideways, the series further complicated both its form and its content by demonstrating how individual identity and experience informed each female character's decisions, motivations, and agendas. In this way, the series deconstructs various stereotypical roles women are placed in such as single mothers, pampered princesses, and imprisoned women. Oftentimes, …

Anglo-American Relations Between The 1953 Coup And The 1956 Suez Crisis, Aaron F. Psujek
Masters Theses
The Cold War and global politics brought upheaval to the Middle East in the 1950s. The conflict between the United States and Soviet Union shaped the history of the region at the same time it brought war to Korea. Britain's relationship with the U.S., especially in the Middle Eastern theater, was shaped by the Cold War. British intelligence, political, and press members and agents used the tensions to bring the United States in to help them in the various crises that swept the Middle East in the 1950s. This strategy served to bring the two countries closer together in the …
The Risks And Rewards Of Personal Writing In The High School Classroom, Dannette L. Williamson
The Risks And Rewards Of Personal Writing In The High School Classroom, Dannette L. Williamson
Masters Theses
In light of the Common Core State Standards, more research is needed on the importance and transfer value of personal writing high school classrooms. These standards have brought a more rigorous focus to student learning. With a stronger emphasis on argument and source-based writing, high school educators need to reexamine if or how personal writing should fit into curricula. For this study, approximately thirty students from each grade at Effingham High School were surveyed. The entire English department, as well as staff members from other disciplines at Effingham High School, were also surveyed. Prominent findings of the data show that …
Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal
Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal
Masters Theses
Explores representations in American news media of women who have been involved sexually with male politicians and women who are politicians through a critical rhetorical lens. Through the use of poststructural feminism, the term "mistress" is problematized. Attention is given to the news media's focus on women's bodies as sites of dangerous sexual temptations as well as the media's constant attention to women's physical features, which reduces women to objects. It is shown that similar coverage regarding bodies is not given to men. Also discusses the news media's frequent interrogation of women's minds. Explores aspects of confession and apology through …
