Letters of Cleve Gilliam of the Gilliam Candy Company, “Manufacturers of ‘Blue Grass’ Brand Candies,” Paducah, Kentucky, to Edwin Larrance, Indianapolis, Indiana, whose health problems are inhibiting his work as the company’s Indiana sales representative. Gilliam complains of the decline in business and of the further difficulty of maintaining profits while supplying free sample boxes of candy. The final letter praises Larrance but terminates the company’s arrangement with him.

Letters of WKU English faculty member Gordon Wilson to fellow faculty member Frances Richards and her sister Mary Ellen Richards, Franklin, Kentucky. The folklorist and accomplished amateur ornithologist writes effusively about his life and post-retirement work, including his autobiography and his linguistic and bird studies in the Mammoth Cave region. He reports various bird sightings and counts to Mary Ellen, discusses upcoming speeches and publications, shares news of his family, friends and health, and thanks Frances for gifts of phonograph records. Includes notes from his wife written after his death.

Most are short notes of thanks, affection or get-well wishes; he asks her to critique his 1960 note “on matters of punctuation and tenses.” Lengthier 1970 letters describe his and wife Emma’s retirement to Hazel, Kentucky and their many contacts with friends from WKU. Includes a photograph of the Wilsons on their 50th wedding anniversary, and Richards’ account of a tribute to Wilson by WKU’s class of 1952.

Each includes a poem by Noe, but in his 1950 letter he advises Richards that he will be discontinuing this forty-year-long custom. He describes his activities with a poetry guild in Los Angeles, California, and recalls their friendship. Includes Noe’s obituary from the Louisville Courier-Journal and a 1969 clipping from the same paper about Noe.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3377. “Shadow of a Rope,” a paper by WKU student Carolyn Pearson about the arrest and trial for rape of an African American man, Sam Jennings, and his 1932 execution, the last public hanging in Breckinridge County and the second-last in Kentucky. Pearson interviewed citizens connected with the case and included five photographs of Jennings on the scaffold.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3373. Letter, 24 September 1960, to WKU faculty member Frances Richards from former student Terry Kelsay, Lexington, Kentucky. He encloses a copy of the October, 1960 issue of The Episcopal Church Advocate of the Diocese of Lexington and draws her attention to its contents, particularly an article about the publication’s founder, John Esten Cooke, and a portrait of him by artist Matthew Jouett. Kelsay expresses pride in the revival of the publication after more than one hundred years, and in the greater numbers of Kentucky Episcopalians since 1950 due to “vigorous evangelism.”
