She praises Keller’s recent autobiography and reports on its popularity with the girls at a Japanese boarding school Rice visited the past summer. Rice encloses a composition of one of the students (not included in this collection) in which she writes that “the eyes of [Keller’s] heart are open.”

Letter, 29 April 1848, postmarked Bowling Green, Kentucky, from Woodford Dulaney to his nephew Robert L. Dulaney, in Marshall, Illinois. He discusses business affairs, including land sales and leases, refers to disputes over the estates of two of Robert’s uncles, relates family news, and comments on worship services by the Shaker community in which they “jump higher & quicker than ever.” He also expresses an intention to watch the Shakers “cut capers” in a local ten-acre field they have cleared.

The record consists of the plaintiff’s complaint and a summons to James.

Writing from Johnson County, Kentucky on his way to New Orleans, Stambaugh describes his travel down the Ohio River to Kentucky, his lack of success in the oil business, and his readiness to “risk my life for money” in New Orleans. He asks for news from home, “and of the girls especially.”

Hinch, New Salem, Illinois. She provides some family news and refers to the recent presidential election as a “great calamity” over which the defeated Whigs are “down in the mouth.” Part of the letter is written by Elizabeth’s daughter Avaline. She reports on her health, suggests names for Hinch’s baby son, and forecasts the continuation of hard times with the election of “old Polk.”

Composed by a committee of the Sunday School at Pleasant Grove Methodist Church, Logan County, Kentucky, the resolution recounts the illness and death of 15-year-old Nora from typhoid fever, and praises her and her family.

He was taken prisoner in Virginia on 25 May 1862, and released on 13 September 1862. He gives a good description of military life.
