The publication in 2008 of the English translation of Emilio Gabbrielli’s novel Polenta e Goanna based on Italian migrants in the West Australian goldfields brings into focus the themes of the bush, the outback and migration that since the mid 1850s (Raffaello Carboni, Rudesindo Salvado) have emerged as a constant thread in texts produced by Italian Australian writers. Italian settlement in rural and outback areas of Australia during the late 1800s and early 1900s has remained a largely unsung saga while most Italians migrating to Australia after 1947 ultimately settled in urban areas. ITALIAN AUSTRALIAN "MIGRATION" LITERATURE HAS DISPLAYED a tendency to present themes and characters closely linked to southem Italy, in particular Sicily and Calabria, a phenomenon in part explained by the massive emigration from these regions between the late I800s and the early 1970s. Sicilian Australians constitute the largest Italian regional group present in the country, with some 50,000 Sicilian born, while, according to community estimates, as many as 200,000 Australian born may have some claim to Sicilian ancestry.

Raffaello Carbonils role both as participant in and chronicler of the Ballarat uprising has been the subject of some controversy. Although the disagreement regarding the veracity of Carboni's account has long been settled (see below), Green, Serle and others who have commented on his work have tended to relegate it to the status of a mere chronicle, without considering that The Eureka Stockade also presents broader themes and perspectives on Australia and Australian society, which Carboni later pursued in his subsequent Italian works displaying an Australian content. The Conference at Bivongi followed on others that had raised some serious questions about the Italian diaspora that occurred after the Second World War. We asked contributors to submit papers in three broad divisions, the first relating to the migrants' experience before departure, the second to experience in the host country, and the third to the cinematographic and literary interpretation of that experience. The papers contributed that successfully completed the peer review process are arranged in that sequence in this book.

Giorgio Mangiamele, born in Catania in 1926, migrated to Melbourne in 1952 and constitutes a rare example of CALD involvement in the early development of Australian cinema in the post-war period. His feature film Clay (1965) was the first Australian film to be invited to enter the competition at the Cannes Film Festival. However, despite his significant contribution to the emerging Australian cinematic culture, particularly to the development of ‘art’ cinema, he has received relatively little recognition. Carboni’s role both as participant in and chronicler of the Ballaarat uprising had historically been the subject of some controversial debate. Although the controversy regarding the veracity of Carboni’s account has long been settled, controversy regarding his competence as a writer is still relatively recent. Geoffrey Serle in the introduction to his edition of The Eureka Stockade claims that the book is unusual and unsusceptible to most canons of criticism although he also admits that Carboni does rise here and there to great narrative heights.
