When one thinks of the naval operations of the War for Southern Independence he is likely to consider only the exploits of the Alabama and other raiders, the duel of the Merrimac and Monitor, the continuous efforts to prevent the blockade-runners slipping into secluded harbors, and the battles of the fleets and forts. It is most unlikely that he knows of the persistent and very important operations of the Union navy all along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Norfolk to Vermillions Bay in Louisiana to wreck the saltmaking of the Confederates.

One Henry Ker, evidently an American, traveled through part of the western United States during the years 1803 to 1810. Like many other travelers, he wrote a book embodying some of his experiences entitled Travels through the Western Interior of the United States. Among the various kinds of men who assisted in the achievement of American independence, there is one whose devotion to liberalism and whose generosity to a struggling and, at times, almost hopeless cause cannot be gainsaid. Neither time nor the debunking zeal of some modern historian has dimmed the role of LaFayette in the founding of this republic, and it is to the credit of the nation that the debt was at length generously repaid.

The visit of Sir John Hawkins to the struggling and disheartened French colonists near the mouth of what is now the St. Johns River is one of the most interesting episodes of that age of gallantry and adventure. It illustrates extreme courtesy and generosity under circumstances when ruthlessness would have been expected ; thus we see why every school-boy instinctively admires the freebooting pirate. Besides, the consequences of that short stay were felt in a revitalized curiosity regarding the new world.

The Creek nation with its lands situated in regions claimed both by Spain and the United States occupied a strategic position at the close of the War of the American Revolution. Since no treaty existed between the two countries the question of boundaries was left entirely for future determination. The Spaniards desired to extend the limits of the Floridas as far northward as possible; while the Americans wished to establish the boundary near the Gulf as specified in the treaty with Great Britain.

For a limited period and to a limited extent negro slavery existed in the Florida peninsula under the early Spanish regime. From at least as early as 1726 the Spaniards welcomed fugitive slaves from Georgia and South Carolina. So also did the lower Creek Indians, who treated them well, admitted them to their free life, and intermarried with them. For the next dozen years the fugitives were sold in St. Augustine, although their liberation was ordered by a royal decree of October 29, 1733. When claimants or their agents came from the neighboring colonies to recover their slaves, they got …
