This essay was awarded a first prize in the Irving Bacheller-Florida Historical Society contest for Florida high-school students, held at Rollins College under the direction of Alfred J. Hanna, February twenty-first last. Mr. Curry, its author, is a student in Orlando High School. The other prize-winners and the subjects of their essays were: Ruthjeanne Bellamy, also of Orlando High School, who wrote on Pirates of the Florida Coast; Nellie Kennedy, of Hernando High School, Brooksville, who wrote on the same subject; and Chester R. Yates, of Plant City High School, on Territorial and Early Statehood of Florida.

It was in January, 1827, that Jefferson County was formed out of Leon, with its western boundary nearly the same as at present and the eastern boundary remaining at the Suwannee until December, 1827, when Madison County was established. Thus Jefferson County became a separate territorial division and governmental organization, after being at times a part of the provinces of East Florida and West Florida, and of the counties of Escambia, Jackson, Gadsden, and Leon. It extends from the Georgia line to the Gulf, a distance of about forty miles, and at the base line is about twenty miles wide. …

The accompanying history of Jefferson County, Florida, was prepared by Senator Pasco at the time of the dedication of the court house at Monticello in 1910, and was in part used by him in an address on that occasion. As first written the history of this region was traced from the earliest times to 1910; but because much relating to the period prior to the establishment of the county in 1827 has appeared in other articles in the QUARTERLY the narrative will begin with that year. Looking backwards for nearly two centuries we see a band of red Americans, who are to become the Seminoles, separate themselves from the Creek Confederacy of Georgia and Alabama and cross the boundary into Florida. Subjects now of the Spanish crown, they become a nation to themselves, and under the sunny skies of the peninsular establish their golden-rule tribal government-characterized throughout by independence, kindliness, and honor.

Gregor MacGregor was the grandson of Gregor MacGregor, the Scotchman, who enlisted in the Black Watch, then Semphill’s Highlanders, and was called in Gaelic “Gregor, the Beautiful.” When the regiment was first ordered to England, in 1743, “Gregor, the Beautiful” and two others were sent on in advance to London, so that the king of England, who was on the point of starting for the continent, might see some soldiers of the regiment before leaving. On viewing Pensacola for the first time one is at once impressed with the gradual rise of Palafox Street from the waters of the bay northward to the top of an eminence where tall shaft has been erected in memory of the soldiers of the Confederacy.
