The Middle Florida cotton plantation region that centered in Tallahassee had good reason in the spring of 1864 to fear an attack by Federal forces despite the impressive Confederate victory at the Battle of Olustee on February 20. After this bloody engagement Union troops retreated to Jacksonville, and pursuing Confederates stopped twelve miles short of the city at McGirt's Creek. They dug in there, and for months there was a standoff. Florida’s long and poorly defended shoreline provided abundant other opportunities for a Federal assault, however. Mutual Aid Societies were an integral part of the lifestyle of nineteenth-century American blacks. These precursors of contemporary insurance companies provided financial assistance to members in time of sickness and crisis and paid the burial costs of the departed member. Societies were founded in the East and throughout the South, both in rural and urban communities. Many of these societies— or burial clubs, as they are commonly called— continue to exist.

In September 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés of Spain sought out and attacked the Huguenot French in their Florida settlement. When his victory was won, a number of men, women, and children had become captives of the Spanish, while at least two Spaniards were prisoners in the hands of the French. Some of these people possessed noble blood; most were common sailors and soldiers. A few gained a degree of notoriety from their experiences– at least one of the captives was received at the court of Philip II of Spain, while another appeared before the Queen Mother of France. Two days after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, James Filor, a southern slaveholder and resident of Key West, Florida, mailed a remarkable letter to the president Filor wrote to convince Lincoln to include Key West with the loyal areas of the South exempted from the proclamation. After assuring the president of Key West's loyalty, Filor pressed his claim for an exemption by arguing that agents of the United States government had induced Key West citizens to purchase additional slaves in the antebellum years. Don't miss the stone crab-it's in season now," counseled Kathryn Loring to her sister before she and her husband made their first trip from Chicago to Florida in February of 1960. Once in Florida, Loring and her husband took her sister's advice, embarking on a self-proclaimed "sea food binge" that included devouring mullet, pompano, New England and Manhattan-style clam chowder, red snapper, shrimp, and, of course, stone crab. Miami, Florida, has long been considered a Western hemispheric hub; Pan-American Airways, for example, began advertising the city as the "Gateway to the Americas" in the early 1930s. By mid-20th century, some 600,000 people traveling to and from Latin America passed through Miami each year, encouraging the city's Chamber of Commerce to organize a series of inter-American business meetings during the 1950s. The Chamber also waged a battle at that time to abolish a federal tax levied on travelers to the Caribbean and Central America. The recent flurry of scholarly endeavors on Spanish Louisiana and the Spanish Floridas has revealed some new sources for the study of those areas. In addition to a number of new books and articles and some valuable reprints, several recent meetings have been devoted in whole or in part to resources and research opportunities for the Spanish era. To the astonishment of many, Lord John Murray, fourth Earl of Dunmore, member of the House of Lords, formerly controversial colonial governor of New York and Virginia, became governor of the Bahama Islands in 1787. Immediately eyebrows were lifted and questions raised as to why the Earl had accepted the apparently insignificant governorship of islands whose total population, black and white, was not appreciably greater than that of Williamsburg when the colonial assembly had been in session. Florida history remembers Henry Bradley Plant and Henry Morrison Flagler because of the railroads and hotels that these two nineteenth century magnates built and because of the major impact that they had on state politics and on Florida’s economic growth. But Hamilton Disston of Philadelphia preceded them, and in fact, helped make their ventures possible. Disston’s own accomplishments may have had a greater influence than either Plant or Flagler in leading Florida into the twentieth century.
