The departure of Spenser for Ireland in 1580 as secretary to Lord Grey of Wilton, newly appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland, marks a significant point in the poet's career. Save for occasional trips to England, the remaining years of his life Spenser spent in this "salvage land", among a hostile and turbulent people, far from the brilliance of English court life and "Elisa's blessed fields." This thesis examines the historical accuracy of Robert Hugh Benson's historical novels "The King's Achievement," "Come Rack! Come Rope!," and "By What Authority," arguing that despite their fictional romantic elements, these novels authentically portray the historical relationship between the English and Catholic Churches during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Bell opens by distinguishing the aims of the historian from those of the novelist, then situates Benson biographically as a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism whose religious sensibility shaped his literary work.

Jacob Thompson moved from North Carolina to northern Mississippi in the mid-1830's where he became a wealthy attorney, landowner and slaveholder. He served as a Mississippi congressman for twelve years, served as President Buchanan's Secretary of the Interior, resigned in January 1861 to serve in the Confederate military, and was appointed by Jefferson Davis to supervise covert activities based out of Canada. Thompson contributed a great deal to Oxford and to the establishment of the new university there. Southern newspapers and histories of the time lauded him as an honorable and accomplished statesman, but Thompson remains a largely neglected figure …

The madrigal is the oldest of concerted secular forms. It had its origin in northern Italy, perhaps as early as the twelfth century. The early compositions had none of the elaborate devices which characterize the madrigals of the sixteenth century. Francesco di Landino, (1325-1390), an Italian, and the leading musician of the Florentine school of his time, wrote a madrigal, Tu che l'opera d'altrul, an extract of which appears in Fellowes' English Madrigal (1) Composers. He was a descendant of old Florentine nobility and lived from 1469 to 1527. This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1930, traces the constitutional and legal history of the American Negro from 1776 to 1875, examining the legislative record underlying the eventual adoption of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments. Labat argues that this body of law developed gradually from colonial-era statutes and custom rather than from any founding constitutional mandate, and that the Federal Constitution itself contained no explicit provision for slavery.
