"In recent centuries one or the other of [the] pillars supporting the Tridentine system have appeared to tremble, but as a whole the system has always survived the various crises which had only brought about certain individual degenerations. Beginning with 1958-1959, through a whole concourse of historical and spiritual factors, and certainly under an impulse of the Holy Spirit, the [Roman] Catholic Church (and more generally the entire Christian world) abandoned the Tridentine system on all fundamental themes. The brief intervening time cannot distract us from the global dimensions and the definitive significance of this abandonment."

Preaching works with words. God can work on the human heart in other ways. He is able to raise up children to Abraham out of stones (Matt. 3:9). He can speak in the innermost heart without benefit of vocabulary. But when we speak of preaching, we talk about talk. We claim to see God in action by means of human language addressed by human speakers to human beings.

For 35 years it has been edited by the faculty of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, as its predecessors had been for 75 years before that. The editorial policy states that articles which appear in it "are to be theologically sound, i. e., according to the Scriptures and in conformity with the Lutheran Symbols." A concern for dogmatics and a concern for ethics do not always go together. The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, for example, has always had a strong dogmatic tradition, but has in general been uninterested in what is commonly called ethics. In Randall Stewart's American Literature and Christian Doctrine, the author unabashedly abandons "the so-highly-prized, the so-strenuously-inculcated academic neutrality" (p. viii) and pleads for a creatively critical evaluation of modern literature by Christian theologians. According to Stewart, the Christian critic must charge contemporary literature "to give an answer for the faith" that is in it. In the same spirit, John Killinger insists he must "ask hard questions of the creative arts… that the critic [the theologian] must judge, or it has nothing at all to say." In the preparation of this essay I was determined to let the Gospels give us the answer to Part I concerning our Lord's attitude toward the Old Testament. It seems to me that there is much that we can gain for our own guidance and inspiration from such a study. Part II deals with the question of the authorship of the Pentateuch. It is appended in the hope that it will help to put current discussions on the Mosaic authorship of the first five books of the Bible into a Biblical frame of reference.
