The Augsburg Confession, W Dallmann Apr 1930

The Augsburg Confession, W Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

After visiting Italy and savagely sacking Holy Rome, Kaiser Karl V made the Peace of Barcelona with the Holy Father on June 29, 1520. On August 3 he mode peace with his chronic rival, "the Most Christian King," Francis I of France. This Peace of Cambray had an article "forbidding to print or sell any Lutheran books.'' Thus the noble Kaiser thanked the Lutherans for saving him in the day of distress from the Turk, the King, and the Pope.

On January 21, 1530, Karl called his Reichstag for April 8 to Augsburg, the burg of the great Caesar Augustus, …

Concerning The Resurrection Body, J T. Mueller Apr 1930

Concerning The Resurrection Body, J T. Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

Modern unbelief, in its onslaught on our Christian faith, is in violent opposition also to the Biblical doctrine of the resurrection, one of the central teachings of the Gospel. With regard to this doctrine, Modernists are divided into two camps. Some, like Fosdick, are inclined to identify the resurrection of the body with the "immortality of the soul.'' (Op. Fosdick, Modern Use of the Bible.) Others, again, deny even the doctrine of personal immortality, claiming that "the only valid immortality is of two kinds, influential and eugenic,'' or, that "the prolonged and rich life of posterity here is the only …

Luther's Academic Relations To Erfurt And Wittenberg, P E. Kretzmann Apr 1930

Luther's Academic Relations To Erfurt And Wittenberg, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The word academic is here used in the special sense of something Agreeing with scholastic rules, customs, and usages; for the age in which Luther lived was very particular in its observance of such relations. And although Luther, in his personal opinions and judgments, made use of great freedom in analyzing such customs, yet his abhorrence of any form of radicalism kept him from actions which might have been regarded as iconoclastic, also in the field of academic courtesies. In other words, while he was not necessarily conscientious and punctilious about these customs, he took part in their observance with …

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching on the Augsburg Confession. The four-hundredth anniversary of Luther's Small Catechism, celebrated wherever the name of Luther was known, has undoubtedly been a source of richest blessing. Pastors and people become better acquainted with its history and contents, learned to appreciate this little book the more highly, and thanked God the more sincerely for this precious gift. The sermons preached on the Catechism during 1920 were not in vain, but productive of splendid results, sure as Is.55, 10. 11 still holds good. Let us hope that similar streams of blessing will flow from the celebration of the four-hundredth anniversary· …

The Contacts Of The Book Of Acts With Roman Political Lnstitutions (Concluded), H O. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

The next contact with Roman political institutions is established in Macedonia, where the occasion of a riot and the subsequent arrest and imprisonment of the Apostle Paul bring out a number of remarks based on existing Roman statecraft. •The event was briefly this: Paul and Silas came to a city called Philippi, in the Macedonian province. In the pursuit of their activity, Paul cast out an evil spirit, from a girl. The owners of this girl, who had gained a considerable income from her mysterious power, find their source of gain cut off and at once proceed to be avenged …

The Eucharist between 30 and 325 A. D. It was in the year 30 A. D., on the evening of the fourteenth of Nisan, corresponding roughly to one of the last days of our March. On this first day of Unleavened Bread, Jesus, responding to a reminder on the part of Hie disciples, exercised the functions of the head of the household or family in sending Peter and John to make ready the Passover for the evening celebration. The Indwelling Of The Trinity In The Heart Of The Believer, Th Graebner Feb 1930

The Indwelling Of The Trinity In The Heart Of The Believer, Th Graebner

Concordia Theological Monthly

We now turn to the discussion of those effects of the divine indwelling that are worked in the Christian's life. That life is bound up in the one word salvation,, and salvation comes through the illumination of tl1e soul with spiritual "knowledge. Christ's own anointing with the Holy Spirit, according to Isaiah, was to be an anointing with " the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the · fear of the Lord." Is. 11, 2. Now, this same Spirit of wisdom and understanding and heavenly knowledge dwells in our …

Does The Bible Claim Infallible Authority For All Its Parts?, Th Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is most heartening to the Bible Christian to see what flimsy arguments modern theology employs to justify its rejection of the Bible as the supreme authority. A paragraph in C.H. Dodd's book The Authority of the Bible, p. 15, may serve as an example. This spokesman of modem theology has well served the cause of the Bible by penning these words: - "The Bible itself does not make any claim to infallible authority for all its parts.”

Sermon Study On Phil. 1, 27-2, 4, F Niedner

Concordia Theological Monthly

A thorough study of this text, the Eisenach Epistle-lesson. for Septuageaima, will confirm the impression received by a casual reading of the words that their import is an exhortation of the Apostle Paul to the congregation at Philippi to remain steadfast in the faith of the Gospel and united in spirit, in spite of all hindrances that might come from without or within. It will be found quite convenient to group the various items found in the text under any, theme which express the above thought.

The Contacts Of The Book Of Acts With Roman Political Lnstitutions, H O. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the Christian Church began to spread, its field of expansion was practically prepared in the territorial extent of the Roman Empire. Beginning at Jerusalem, the Church rapidly extended its borders beyond this city; it embraced all Palestine and the neighboring lands of Syria, Asia minor, and Egypt and soon had crossed into Macedonia and Achaia. Jerusalem did not remain the geographical center of the Christian Church very long; this city very soon found itself on the eastern extremity of church territory, just u it was situated near the eastern extremity of the Roman Empire. A map of church territory …
