Chapter 10 of St. Paul’s letter to the Romans has been called in question by some of the higher critics. To one who realizes that Rome then was the center of Mediterranean civilization and that men (and women) incessantly came and went there for a multitude of motives, there is nothing wonderful in the preponderance of Greek names over Latin in that chapter. Prisca (Priscilla) and Aquila pursued there the manufacturing of tent-cloth; but they were natives of the province of Pontus. Paul himself, a Roman citizen by birth, was a native of Tarsus, capital of Cilicia. I will dwell …

There is only one eternal and unchanging truth in the world, and that truth is the Word of God. In words of surpassing beauty and power St. Peter writes: "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. For all flesh is as grass and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The gross withereth, and the flower thereof fadeth away; but the Word, of the Lord, endureth forever," 1 Pet. 1, 23-25. Cp. John 17; Rom. 10. This is the Word which, as Peter …

It would be difficult to find on the pages of the entire Scriptures, even in the fulfilment of the New Testament, a passage which in point of clarity, precision, and emphasis surpasses the offer of full and free grace that is contained in the oft-quoted, much-beloved words of the prophet Isaiah: "Come now and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool," chap. 1, 18.

“I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness.'' The loving Husband, His heart filled with love divine, leads His apostate wife into the wilderness. The selfsame God that punished her, vv. 8-13, is the God of love, who has loved her with an everlasting love. When she stands stripped of all her beauty and all her wealth, v. 3, destitute, despised, forsaken by her lovers, a miserable woman, not daring to raise her eyes for shame, then I will "speak comfortably unto her," speak to her heart, so heavy, so sad.

On the sixth day of November there was laid to rest in the land of his birth, which he had left fifty-six years ago and to which he had returned in 1923, a man whose name deserves to be retained in loving and grateful memory within our circles. It is Prof. Georg Mezger, D. D., for twenty- seven years the teacher of Homiletics, Catechetics, and Pastoral Theology at our Seminary, for the post eight years teaching at the Seminary of the German Evangelical Lutheran Free Church of Saxony at Berlin-Zehlendorf. Mezger was a quiet, unassuming, unobtrusive person, at all times …

The Meaning Of Calvary In The Minds Of Modernists, W. H. Dau

The Christ of Modernism has been "made in Germany," at the German universities, and it has taken about a hundred years to make him. The one book that recounts the genesis of the Modernists' Christ with fulness and sincerity has been written by Albert Schweitzer and bears the title Von Reimarus zu Wrede. (A second edition appeared in 1913, bearing the title Geschichte dcr Leben--Jesu-Forschung.) This book was published in an English translation in 1910, but under a new title, The Quest of the Historical Jesus. Schweitzer says of the German attempt to produce the modernist Christ: “It is impossible …

Concordia Theological Monthly
When in 1855 Lehre und Wehre, the chief ancestor of the Concordia Theological Monthly, made its appearance, it could be compared to a vigorous youth who with his right hand held a loft the Bible and with his left the Confessions of the Lutheran Church. From the very beginning it was apparent to all readers that the editors conceived of their task as consisting in promulgating and defending, with all the theological apparatus and equipment available, "God's Word and Luther's doctrine pure.'' Month after month scholarly articles, pointed paragraphs on current religious happenings, and informing book reviews come before the …

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.
Theology and Academic Freedom.
Modern rationalistic theology demands that the official teachers of the Church, both in the pulpit and in the lecture chair, should be invested with full academic freedom. That is to say, they should be allowed to assert their subjective opinions without any restrictions whatsoever; oven Holy Scripture must not be forced upon them as the only source and standard of the faith which they are to inculcate.

Hosea at the very beginning of his book calls attention to the fact that not only the command, v. 2, but all his speeches recorded in this book are not man’s words, human speeches, but words of the Lord, as whose mouthpiece Hosea served.
