Study Of The Eisenach Epistle-Lesson For The Eighteenth Sunday After Trinity, Th. Laetsch

James, in his epistle to the twelve tribes scattered abroad, does not teach salvation by works, nor does he proclaim a different way to heaven from that preached by Paul, Rom. 8, 24, and John, John 1, 19. 18, and Peter, Acts 15, 7-11, and Jesus, Mark 16, 18. James, a servant of Jesus Christ, chap. 1, 1, teaches salvation by grace through faith. Chap.1, 17.18 he speaks of regeneration though the Word by the grace of God. V. 21 he speaks of the Word as being able to save, which Word must be received, or believed. His object is …

The Koridethi Manuscript And The Latest Discoveries In Egypt, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
A little more than ten years ago a short article was offered in the Theological Monthly, the predecessor of the Concordia Theological Monthly, on the topic "The Freer Manuscripts and the Oxyrhynchus Papyri" (Vol. I, 1921, 255-259). The importance of these manuscripts for the student of the Greek New Testament has since been abundantly demonstrated, and it is most fortunate that reprints and facsimile copies of most of the important material included in these finds are available in the larger libraries.

The Religion Of Ancient Egypt, E. G. Sihler
The Religion Of Ancient Egypt, E. G. Sihler
Concordia Theological Monthly
Paul generally summarizes the world of men about him as Jews and Greeks, the latter being more comprehensive to him than to us in our outlook upon the ancient world. Paul also often uses the Jewish term the nations, which the Authorized Version renders Gentiles (as Rom. 2, 14; I like Luther's Heiden better) and which comprehended all non-Jews. One fundamental observation must be made at the beginning of this essay.

Recommended by the congregation at Antioch unto the grace of God, Paul, having chosen Silas as his companion, set out on his second missionary journey. After visiting the congregations founded by him on his first journey and having gained in young Timothy a new assistant, he entered Phrygia and Galatia, and then turned westward on one of the great military roads lending to the Aegean Sea. He was forbidden to preach in Asia, that Roman province comprising the southwestern portion of Asia Minor, and also from bringing the Gospel into Bithynia, the northern province.

Have We Lost Our Balance?, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
Things are said to be in unstable equilibrium when they lose their balance even upon very slight provocation. When men are in the same predicament, they are said to have lost their poise. If this condition is habitual, the individual is said to be erratic. The same phenomenon may often be associated with an organization, partly because of mob psychology, partly because of leadership that is subject to eccentricities. Such a body, organization, or association is said to have lost its balance.

Paul had celebrated the Passover festival of the year 58 at Philippi, Acts 20, 6. His intention was to spend Pentecost at Jerusalem, although we are not told the reason for this wish. Time pressed, and hence Paul decided not to stop at Ephesus since he feared that the trip to this city might unduly delay him. At Miletus, however, his ship lay over for several days, perhaps to unload, or take on, cargo. This apparently unforeseen delay gave him an occasion to send for the elders of Ephesus.
The Shifting Sands Of Science, Th. Engelder
The Shifting Sands Of Science, Th. Engelder
Concordia Theological Monthly
Men are colling upon the Christian Church with increasing insistence that it adjust its teachings to the findings of science. The Western Christian Advocate of December 22, 1027, declared: "New discoveries have necessitated new statements of our faith. Our views of the Bible, our ideas as to God's relationship to the world, have got to be reconstructed. . . . The heterodoxies of one day have become the orthodoxies of the next." w. K. Wright, in A. Student’s Philosophy of Religion, demands that he, the student, draw no conclusions in conflict with the dicta of present-day mental and physical science. …

Propositions On Marriage And Divorce, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
The mutual consent directly and unmistakably given, of one woman to be the wife of one particular man, and of that man to be the husband of that same woman, both of them being capable of contracting marriage. is, according to Scripture, the very essence of the marriage contract. It is immaterial whether this mutual promise or consent is designated an engagement a betrothal, or is called by any other name, as long as it is shown to have been made.
