Mowrer does not write very much about the relation of Hitlerism to Church and religion; still he does permit himself a digression on Luther. which is one of the most unfounded and bitter attacks on the Reformer that has come to my attention. It is such a gross misrepresentation of historical truth that it brought doubts into my mind as to the reliability of Mowrer in other matters.

The questions, Shall the preacher use a text? and, Shall the preacher preach the Word of God? are not identical. The preacher should always preach the Word of God, but this he might do without the use of a sermon text. The use of a sermon text, however, has not only come to be an established custom, but there are good reasons for continuing this custom: it makes for bettor preaching.

In his recent book The Hebrew Literary Genius (Princeton University Press, 1933) Duncan Black MacDonald, professor emeritus of the Hartford Theological Seminary, presents a modernized revision of the widely heralded theory which finds in the early Arabic the prototype of Hebrew literature and Old Testament institutions. Dr. MacDonald, a leading Arabist of this generation and an honorary member of the Arab Academy of Damascus, has brought Wellhusen up to date, removed scientific archaisms from Robertson Smith, and in the light of more recent investigations has revised the details of Goldziher and of other professional Islamic studies.
